Loss of power under load

Recommended Posts

Newby here. Sorry if I posted in the wrong area. Just got this truck so the super chip is going in the trash.

 Ok I have full gauges.

New vp new lp new apps.

I have no white tag to set volts to first off. So how do I know what to set it to?

Second it revs like a monster in neutral with 13psi. Wot it's at 11psi idol its 18psi.

Pulls hard till about 20psi of boost or 2200 rpm.

Then sometimes it does it at 10psi and 1400rpm. Sounds great till then. If you ease in to it it wont change anything. And I can't get the chip to connect to ecm. I get a code but only after I run the truck.shut it off code goes away.

I'm going to assume you have a Timbo's there is no voltage to set it about the angle.

Lift pump is weak. Fuel system too restrictive. You should have only a 2 to 3 PSI drop not a 7 PSI drop that's too much.

That's the limit of the Superchip vs the turbo without a boost elbow. The wastegate pop open and the boost stops.

You've got issues with that SuperChips I would return to stock and then consider getting Quadzilla way better tuner.

What's the code? Also no code will self erase for 40 warm-up cycles so in other word you have to start from below 140*F and rise above 160*F without tripping the code for 40 times. I promise the code is in the computer yet it's not gone.

The only thing I can add is free revving in neutral is not a true measure of fuel pressure. Other than idle you need to measure under load on the highway. Chances are you are much lower that you think. Do you have the stock block mounted pump?

Yes fuel system is all stock. Truck ran fine before VP failed.  So I did the normal new ip New lP new filter.I was getting 30+psi boost. 13psi is wot under load at 80mph. It's a 3500. Weighs 9600 with my tools in it. Haven't pulled a trailer yet. New fuel system and then this all happens. I tried to pull the chip but it wont communicate with ecm. I want it stock so I can start my own build. Apps is parts store. It runs strong till the cel comes on then defuels. You can wait a second and then it runs iffy.

Cant you just un plug the chip? Thats all I have to do to take my comp off.

What code are you seeing?

If the truck is stock the ECM will defuel the engine once you pass around 20 PSI of boost. My comp boost fuels the ECM into not seeing that. Not sure if the super chip does that, I know nothing about them. If it is not communicating with the ECM I doubt if is boost fooling. Was the super chip working before the VP failed?

Yes. I bought the truck and it ran perfectly. No issue at all no codes. Now it runs high egt at Cruze throws a code and drinks fuel like mad.

I can't read the code with my super chip

It will read and say no dtc. But it wont let me go back to stock. It says can't communicate with ecm.

I have to assume that the suprechips works like a Smarty and installs a program and then you have to put it back stock to install another. Maybe a call to them might help or take it to an auto parts place and see if their code reader will communicate with the truck.

Check all your OBDII pins. I've had a Smarty Touch behave the same way and found one of the SCI bus pin pushed out the back. You'll have to push the plug out of the metal tab on the dash and verify all the pins are locked in.

I have done that already. I keep playing with the obd2 port hoping it will fix it. Called them a wile ago and they were a joke. Thank you for all the advise. This is my third cummins. So I'm stumped as all get out. What about flash the ecm? Can I get away with that?if I can't connect to ecm then can I pull it and have them flash it?I'll try a buddies code reader. I drive trucks so my schedule is tuff to work with. Thanks again guys

Ok. So 3 code readers and still can't communicate with ecm.  Pulled and cleaned all pig tails. Is this a sign of bad ecm?

All my gauges work fine. Wts fuel rpm all of it. It has 289000 miles on it. My obd2 port wires are all in the right spot cleaned and lubed with dielectric grease. Same with ecm pig tail. Can't pull any codes still. Scan tool says there aren't any. So...

No insight yet. I ran the truck today and wow.

1/8 tank to go 20 miles. At 70mph I'm at 1000 degrees egt and at idle it wont stop smoking. Black smoke at 400 degrees egt. 180 engine temp. 15psi fuel pressure at 70mph. Wtf.

New ip and lp and over flow banjo. Before the lp failed I can go 450 500 miles on a tank.

 Anybody have a clue?
