Fueling issue

Recommended Posts

I have a 2002 dodge ram 3500 5.9 high output 6 speed manual i am having issues with, starts fine but when you give it gas it cuts out and starts blowing whitish bluish color smoke. Tested in tank fuel pump it came back bad so i replaced the fuel pump, get in it to prime fuel back into water fuel separator starts and idle fine, killed the truck and went to start it back it started running rough. Gave it a little gas it died now it wont start back? Can anyone suggest what i need to do?

How did you test this pump?  Did you test with a fuel gauge at the VP44 inlet?

I am assuming that you had to drop the tank to replace the in-tank lift pump.  Air would have been introduced into the fuel system during this repair.  Did you verify with a gauge that the new lift pump was working before you started the engine?

Also, did you use the "bump starter" method several times to run the lift pump for 20 seconds at a time to purge out air before you started the engine?

If you have done none of the above then you have not verified that the new lift pump is working properly.  Even if it is working properly, the air introduced during the repair may now be in the high pressure injector lines.  This air would will have to be vented by loosening some injector lines at the head while the engine is being cranked over.

I did use the bump starter method several times after putting the new fuel pump in, and yes i did have to drop the tank. I have verified the new fuel pump is working, i unhooked the fuel line that runs to the water/fuel separator and i get a reading of 15 pounds of pressure. Hooked everything back up and used the bump start method again to purge air out and it still will not start. If air is in the high pressure injector lines which lines do i disconnect to get the air out?

The easiest one(s) to get to...2&3 or 2&4.  Crack them open 1 turn and spin motor over until fuel is coming out.  Then retighten and spin over til it cranks.  You can give it a little gas after it stumbles a few times to keep it running.  Let it idle for a few minutes and you should be good.
