DTC Trouble Code’s. HELP! Please.

Recommended Posts

I have a 2001 Cummins 4x4 6 speed manual. With edge comp box. Valair DD Clutch. It has a small lift pump on the frame rail. The filter is an external unit from the LP. Also the previous owner said that it had an Industrial Injection Hot Rod VP44 Injection Pump. It is Otherwise stock.

Today when I got into the truck to drive to work it had the Check Engine Light on. So I cycled the key three times and read the codes. They are

PCU - P0163

P Done

P ECU - P0237
P0382
P0380.

I have noticed that when I get into 5th and 6th gear. If I’m not heavy on the pedal that it likes to shutter a little. Like fuel filter is clogged or if your in to high of a gear going up an incline. It’s not a bad shutter. But an annoying one at that. So I was planning on doing. Valve lash. Fuel filter with seam foam or Howe’s meaner cleaner and an oil change with oil stabilizer.
I also plan on installing my FASS Titanium 165 with 1/2 lines and Sump when I get the time too.
Does anyone have any suggestions. .
I’d love to verify what these codes are and what I need to do. And if I should be worrying about them. They are getting fixed regardless. But idk what I should expect price wise for parts.

Also got code P1689 no communication toinjection pump from ECM. Still runs good. I have read that crank sensor and or map sensor or fuel filter have solved this code. Anyone ? I’m doing fuel filter crank sensor and map sensor today along with an oil change. This is my daily driver / work truck. I depend on this truck to make my money so it has to be 110%. Any help would be wonderful

If you go to the articles section under 24v 2nd gen the obd II error codes are listed there. Sorry I cant link them.

The 163 is not listed but I believe that would 1693 you saw. That is telling there are other codes in the other computer.

The 380 and 382 are for the grid heaters. Sounds like the PO might have disconnected them at the solenoids on the drive inner fender well. That will set the codes.

The 237 is a low volt code on the MAP sensor. That could be the sensor or wiring for the sensors. This can cause some some weak power if it is failing. All the diagnostics are in the error code section.

If you have a hot rod VP and a comp operatiing off of the stock fuel system and near stock lift pump, the FASS needs to go in first and then see how it runs. You are probably suffering from some fuel starvation. Get a fuel pressure gauge also. Try keep the pressure set where it will stay 14 psi and above at all times. Your VP will love you for it. Some 2 stroke oil in the fuel will help also. About 1oz per gallon.

Your truck should not have a crank sensor, just a cam sensor behind the VP. Probably not an issue. You would be having some drivability issues if it was failing.

Edge Comp and Hot Rod Pump. Too much timing, too advanced. Should never run a tuner on a Hot Rod Pump which is stacking timing being the Hot Rod Pump has added timing mechanically and then the Edge Comp is stacking more on top. Then to make matters worse the Edge Comp has no adjustment to retard some timing. If you switch the Comp for Quad that could be fixed.

P0380 and P0382 is grid heaters like Dave said. Just that if the wires are hooked up it could be the solenoids are wore out. If you live in a non-smog area and warm climate then you can ignore this and the truck will be fine it not a requirement for operation in warm states down south. Ohio well, you might need it for the winter time.

P0237 code. Pull the Edge Comp lead and return to stock and erase the codes. If the codes remains away then the Edge Comp boost fooler is damaged and will need to be replaced. Which could be a good thing and fix the shutter problem above.

After doing to looking.  It is not a Hot rod pump. It is a stock pump.   The issue I found out to be was my edge box is for a 98.5-00 and it was throwing the map sensor code regularly.  Removed the edge box and it’s been good to go since then.

so I’m going to get the correct box for my truck with the monitor when I get the time.

thanks guys .

If you are going to spend the money get a Quad with V2. It is a better and more versatile tuner for the VP trucks. I have an Edge comp and it works as advertised but anything much bigger than stock injectors and it will be smokey. The Quad is a better investment. Hope to have me one soon.
