Back at the top of the Google pile

Does this format do meta tags automatically or must the be manually entered? My MS site, I have seriously raised our profile by adding correct meta tags to our global headers. Every time I think of a key word, it goes into the meta tags. The other day, I Googled a question that came up on my board, & dang if our site was not on the first Google page. That never happened before I did this. We used to have a guest count of 100-150 a day... now it's not unusual to top 300. And we are increasing membership, I'm convinced because of the higher profile.Just my thoughts,Russ

META tags are not the full answer... Google put a lot of stress on...

<title> Back at the top of the Google pile - Reply to Topic</title>

Then content. So if you go out to Google Analytics and look at the different search people are doing like "timbo apps" so what I did was made sure I use the phase "timbo apps" alot in a single post plus in the title of the post. This is what pushs them high in rank. Now META tage keywords help but they got to be done right too... Here is my fuel pressure article. http://mopar.mopar1973man.com/cummins/2ndgen24v/fuel-pressure/fuel-pressure.htm Now here is my META keywords...

<meta name="Keywords" content="fuel pressure,lift pump,overflow valve,minimum pressure,injection pump,fuel flow,fuel line,vp44 pump,pressure gauge,difficult starting,plumbing restrictions,vp44 overflow valve,fuel pressure gauge" />

What I did is use a META keyword counter to show me how many time each keyword was used. The going back to Google Analytics I looks for the most popular keyword being used and the matches I place on the page. Now going over to Google webmaster page and checking the gain/loss of each keyword I know I'm moving forward more so now.

Which script where you using? There is a few newer ones with a much lighter footprint. :hyper: I hate to say it but since the internet is constantly changing and re-shaping you can't just install a scrpit and expect it to keep going without updating or seeing if there is a newer version. That one of my biggest jobs here is going back over to vBulletin.org and checking all my plugins about once a month for updates or changes. Like I just got smacked between the eyes with YouTube now changing its share link and now my vBulletin software now long works right with the YouTube links so now I got to file a bug report and see if there is going to be a fix for YouTube. So I got to admit as a Owner/Admin of a web site it take a lot of research time and effort to stay ahead of the pack. You might have to drop me a link to your site so I can give you a hand...

After taking a peek with FireFox and FireBug you got a few issues that do slow it down... You not bad your over all score is 85 (B)

Etags are misconfigured so those file will not be cached and requires constant downloading to refresh a page.

Too many domains. You've got over 14 domains hosting content for you site. Reduce to under 4.

Mike,I haven't a clue what you just said.I did not set up the site... have just been trying to keep it running. The founder too a hike 2 years ago. It's not too bad now speed wise, but faster is always better. I can access the headers & footers.Russ

Ok the domains is a problem. Everytime there is a new domain name to lookup a ip address for it time lost. So the domain below...

msrefugees.proboards.com

cdn.gigya.com

socialize.gigya.com

input.insights.gravity.com

cdn.insights.gravity.com

gradients.proboards.com

i113.photobucket.com

i515.photobucket.com

i122.photobucket.com

www.paypal.com

images.proboards.com

s2.images.proboards.com

www.google.com

client4.addonchat.com

So now you got to look at where these things are being pulled from and see about keeping as much as possible under you domain name. So like my site I've got only a few domains... 3 of them are from my own domain mopar1973man.com the other 2 are from google. This is a good setup.

[*]forum.mopar1973man.com

[*]ajax.googleapis.com

[*]adserver.mopar1973man.com

[*]forumimages.mopar1973man.com

As for the expire header that can be added in a simple .htaccess extention. This will cause the site to set a 1 month (2,592,000 seconds) expire header to all extensions "ico,pdf,flv,jpg,jpeg,png,gif,swf,mp3,mp4,css,js"...

<FilesMatch "\.(ico|pdf|flv|jpg|jpeg|png|gif|swf|mp3|mp4|css|js)$">Header set Cache-Control "public"Header set Cache-Control "max-age=2592000, public"Header unset Last-Modified</FilesMatch>

As for the ETags you just need to add this few line to the .htaccess extention.

Header unset PragmaFileETag NoneHeader unset ETag

This will unset them and cause them to follow the caching settings.

So here is my current setting used here at mopar1973man.com

#CACHING SCRIPTHeader unset PragmaFileETag NoneHeader unset ETag # 1 MONTH<FilesMatch "\.(ico|pdf|flv|jpg|jpeg|png|gif|swf|mp3|mp4|css|js)$">Header set Cache-Control "public"Header set Cache-Control "max-age=2592000, public"Header unset Last-Modified</FilesMatch># DEFLATE <FilesMatch "\.(js|css)$">SetOutputFilter DEFLATE</FilesMatch>

Take notice I've added a deflate command to mine to aid in compression of all files before being sent out to the members which shaves off a bit more weight and produces a quicker page. But once again this all based on what you got for a web hosting. Some server might not have these functions...

--- Update to the previous post...

Just to hijack my thread a moment to give you a feel... :cookoo:

  • 8 years later...

Don't forget, Google has selective results based on your search and browsing history and likely other variables. Not everyone gets the same results. A search for "timbo apps" still gets me this site as result #4 on page #1 though, so that's good.

That is very old post. (2011 post) Changes daily...

Based on lots of other factors now since 2011. Age of the information, how many times it been linked to, how many time it been searched for, how many star rating the article has, etc. Since we are HTML5 complaint and using all modern micro-code for SEO purpose the result can be very dynamic now. They will change season to season even

https://www.google.com/search?q=chrysler+ccd+bus+system

Just a few. This will change again in time...
