Having some computer issues

My computer is acting up and i'm not able to figure out whats going on with it. It has probably 7-8 usb ports on it, some of the ones on the back I have my mouse, keyboard and printer hoolked to (they all are working). On the front I have 3 ports and also a slot I can plug my camera SD card into it. Whenever I plug a flash stick into one of the ports it doesn't pop the box open asking my what I want to do, as in view files, play files etc, and if I go to My Computer, locate the drive on try to open it up it always says the drive needs to be formatted. A couple of the sticks i have I said ok, formatt, it always says they couldn't be done. One stick I have I know works because my wife took it to get pictures developed off of it, asks for me to do the same thing, but i'm not going to because I don't want to lose all my pictures. Any stcik I do plug in that acts that way, if i go into my computer and check the properites of the drive, it always says the drive it full and has no more room, even when I know there is nothign on the stick. Device manager shows no issues, all the usb ports say in there they are all working ok.SD slot also want sme to formatt . Anyone have any ideas for a computer dummy. I searched on the net but i'm finding some of the explainations kind of confusing to be quite honest and not really sure if it pertains to my problem exact :banghead:

Both sticks wont let me run the error check in propeties, soon as I select to do it and click to start, the box closes and thats it.I know the one stick works on another computer because like I said, my wife took it somewhere and accessed it to develop pictures

Could be worn out, just thought it's odd that 3 sticks, 1 SD card and even my cell phone all say they need to be formatted when plugged in to this computer. I know my cell phone is ok because I used it on 2 other computers in the past few days to load stuff on to it.

I've had the problem with floppy disks. I just kept trying different drives and disks until one worked. You say the drives work so that only leaves the USB itself in question. I have 1 computer with USB ports that work and don't work that are even on the same controller so I don't know what the deal is. If I were you, I would try it in EVERY USB port, so move the keyboard and mouse to the front ports so you can test it in the back ports. If nothing still, then I would make sure the drives work by taking them to another computer. If that works then I would reinstall or upgrade the USB drivers. If that works then I would get a new USB controller altogether (PCI add on) and hopefully that works. I don't know why some USB ports do that crap but I haven't been able to pinpoint exactly why they do it.

Do you have any info on when it started doing this? Did windows do any updates or something?

I found something else that supposedly fixed other peoples identical issue. Open command prompt by going to start, run, then type cmd and hit enter. Then type sfc /scannow and hit enter and yes thats a space between the sfc and /scannow, then hit enter and let it do it's thing. If it didn't do anything it will just say it didn't find any violations. If it did find stuff then it should fix them automatically, after it's done see if the issue is fixed.

Also relize that Windows XP was obsolete after 2009. Microsoft EOL (End Of Life) is about 5-7 year and Windows XP being the longest living software.

You may want to try going to Control Panel > System > Device Manager and look for any yellow exclamation points. Click on the exclamation point and look at Properties. Post the info and we can go from there.

Everything in Device manager shows ok, no exclaimation points anywhere, that's why i'm puzzled. I did try what you said ISX, part way through it said it needed the Xp disc inserted to load some missing DLL files, I put it in and let it complete, but it didn't show up any issues. I guess I'll have to break down and take it to the shop. I still have warranty, but I just hated leaving it there for however long they need it. Hopefully I can make an appointment and he will look at it right then. Thanks for the ideas fellas :thumbup2:

  • 1 month later...

Got my computer fixed. Come to find out it was a bad version of Windows. When I had the system built I had a legal copy of Windows to put on it, but instead of me driving to the shop with my disc, I just gave them my serial number for mine over the phone and they used a copy they had there. Got it back last night, all hardware checked good, loaded a good copy back on and all my usb's etc..work fine :thumbup2:
