I imagine most you guys feel that it is better to haul a Truck Camper on a dually. I am a SRW sort of guy and weigh around 10,000 lbs when hauling my camper. I have to admit that it would be better if I had a dually. However, dealers all across the nation are saying that a SRW is okay for the lighter class of TC's like mine weighing 2475 dry. You see a lot of them and like me seem to have no problem getting insurance. Besides the number of wheels (obvious difference) is there really anything weaker about the axles and bearings on a 3/4 ton SRW truck? Mine is a camper package btw. Whatever that means

Wife got me a Big Buddy Heater for Christmas. Got the Hose/Line to tap into the house propane system. 12' hose and quick coupling. I know this has been beat to death...literally. What do you guys think about running it all night with all the proper precaustions? Ventiliation, CO detector. I figure this is a forum full of guys that are sound minded. I am leaning towards doing it. I want a CO detector with digital read out. Maybe a cheapo and a digital units. I ordered a PlatCat over a year ago and no dice. Called him once and he said he'd get on it. Now I'm thinking of saving the money and just going Buddy.

Wife went out to check the camper. Despite the new roof covering, there is water leaking from the skylight and the wall near that window. It could be leaking from either place or both? Once the water gets inside the ceiling... it could run anywhere. I dug out the guy's number but am not going to ruin his Thanksgiving... I'll ruin his Friday instead. *&^%$#!

As posted below, picked up the camper with it's new rubber roof, trim repairs, sealant & calk. One thing he did, per our request... he added rain gutters over the windows where the track had overflowed rain water into the interior. He pointed out that there IS a gutter along the roof edge. I'd never cleaned it out but you can be sure it will be on a regular basis. The added gutter... he called it a "Z" vinyl siding trim piece from house siding... used around doors... and forced it into the trailer siding lap joints. I think it's a '5/8" J molding'. It is very slick. I'm going to observe the operation but may add it to other compartments.

Yesterday we took the old & abused Tahoe Transport Toy Hauler to an independent shop to have repairs done and a new rubber roof put on. There will be more on this but what's on my mind right now is how hard this trailer is to uncouple the WD hitch after use. I hate WD hitches but it is more than needed to keep the truck steering wheels in contact with the road to steer... kind of necessary... more so than lima beans! But I digress! I don't recall a brand on the ball socket... it's OEM, welded to the trailer tongue of course. I don't know if I've got a picture anywhere... I'll look. After the WD Torsion bars are released & removed, the safety hitch pin…

I bought a new 7 pole RV plug for the trailer project. I wired it all up. The &^%$#! plug would not go into the trailer receptacle on my 01 truck. I don't have the packaging but think it came from WalMart or Harbor Freight. The noticeable thing about it is the silver (plated) contacts which extend beyond the cutouts in the plug body. I tried beveling edges, went over it with a digital caliper... every dimension is +.001 strong. I removed the round center pin just to try but still no go. After taking the wires out, I was able to force it into the socket... but I'm not going to use it. Before I went to the store, I looked in a box with my spare brake controll…

My ole man just bought a 16' flat bed 5th wheel trailer, 20' total length. Tandem axle. We are replacing the deck, as the wooden one has rotted out, replacing the wiring and upgrading the lights to LED's, brakes, wheel bearings and seal, and painting the whole thing. He picked it up for 500 bucks so no complaints here. LOLIt needs new tires due to the old tires being dry rotted and balder than a nascar tire. What tires would you recommend and why? I have no idea what trailer tire to go with.Won't be towing to many heavy loads but want to put here to the test from time to time LOL

Well gang... I gone and done it. I got the Honeywell thermostat installed and all figured out. The first thing to suggest is to open up the access to both the furnace and the A/C unit and look at the wiring layout. Now I know with RV system there is no exact code they must hold to for color or labeling. So once I look at the furnace I saw a Red and White wire. So back at the thermostat I unhooked and touch them together and presto heater. Now also looking at the old thermostat the Red from the furnace was labeled +12V. Which it was a power lead so knowing this I place that lead to the R terminal on the new thermostat. The White wen to the W terminal. Now the A/C …

I'm still exploring this with my used trailer. I have learned a bit about VIN numbers. First digit 1 or 4 = USA buildSecond digit = maker. I find NO LISTING for my X second digit. Guessing trailer makers don't have the volume to justify their own letter identifier. So when I try to validate my VIN the number is spit out as ERROR!

I wish to put 2 new tires for my travel trailer. Current tires are 205-75-14. Load range b. Max inflation is 35 psi. I would like to get 2 new tires prior to hunting season. We travel about 20 miles of good gravel road. I am thinking of getting 2 195-75-14 load range D. They inflate to 65psi and have a load rating of 1,710# each. My trailer gross max weight is 7k. Question is, is it advisable to mix-n-match tires? I'd put one on each side. So I'll at least have 2 that I can count on. These are BFG-KO's. Only size available in 14". And within an inch overall diameter of the 205's. In all the years of off roading we've never had a failure with these tires.

Well in the Morning I go to pick up my New to me 1998 Newmar Moutain Air 39 BRSK. I spent the last 5 year's serching all around the web looking for my Dream Rv for a understandable price. When yesterday i found it and today bought it. It took a lot of sweet talking to the bank loan officer due to it's age. But i did, it's a 40Ft fiffthwheel with a gooseneck adapter on the hitch it's a Dual Tandem yes Dual axel Dual wheel never seen another one like this. It's total weight is on the heavy side I know. The wet weight is 16,000pds. I have towed more then that on this truck but, i knew it was back there and i have no plan's with this truck to leave the 50 mile area of my 3 l…

I'm not particularly fond of the RV dealer nor 'am I fond of the manufacturer. My rant goes out this time, to the manufacturer! Since my purchase of my NEW 5th wheel toyhauler, I have had many headaches that I should not have ever had to deal with this early in the game! I will be contacting them tomorrow and talking to their customer relations and at the very least giving them a piece of my mind about their QUALITY CONTROL. I have since had a slew of problems arise since my purchase of the trailer. I will name a few: - A hydraulic landing jack leaking - Awnings defective, BOTH, they need to be replaced. - Slideouts, panel no longer works to operate the…

My work trailer needed brake work. Magnets worn, shoes worn, drums fried on the magnet face. Found a local distributor. New 10" total brake assembly minus the hub/drum for $35 each. Everything went well. Couple hours to change over. I've got the bearing lube system that has a grease zirk in the end of the axle stub. Anyway, I'll let you guys know how the new Nev-R-Adjust system works out. Same basic system as older. Just a cable and advance system for the star wheel. With the new hub/drums I have all new bearings and seals too. $90 a wheel total cost. I'll have the old drums turned and next time it will be cheaper. 40k miles in two years on my work trailer. Brakes don't l…

Just thought I would share our misadventures as yesterday was a rough day in more ways than one. My family and I are moving from Alaska to Utah and began our journey on Monday weighing in at around 22,000 pounds. On day 2 we ran into about 200 miles of frost heaves. For those that don't know, a frost heave is a huge dip or bump in the road resulting from thawing and freezing of the permafrost under the road. Some of them are bad enough to catch air in your vehicle. Anyway, The frost heaves were so bad that our trailer tongue folded about halfway between Tok, Alaska, and Whitehorse, Yukon Territory...truly the middle of nowhere. Once we put the important stuff in the…
