I have heard a lot of rumors about what the dealer can activate with the Star scan tool through the CAN BUS system.  I'd like to hear from people that have actually had some features turned on, not from a guy you know or what not.  Actual experiences, share your year and what you had done.  Some things I've heard (I know some of these are true)  High idle, accessory power delay after ignition is turned off before the door is opened, changing the vehicle location to Canada will turn on daytime running lights, activating the trailer lights through the factory trailer hookup.  I would like for this to be an easy place to gather information if someone that wants a feature activated by their stealership and is getting pushback, or maybe just a place to learn about what is available in your vehicle. 

no first hand use here, but I know the star scan on the vp trucks can act in the same way as a DBRIII tool.  Effectively lets you test anything that is controlled by a computer.

On the common rail truck they have TIPM (Totally Integrated Power Module) which controls a lot of different things on the truck. The best person I can say to talk to is @Chris O. since he's the site CCD Network guru. I know that Common rail trucks run a totally different network but the principal is still the same just more features and options to play with.

YES! In 2006 Chrysler as a whole, not just their Ram line of trucks, went to the TIPM and have been using it ever since. This is why I won’t get rid of my 05’, best of both worlds with the cp3 CR and regular style fuse box. The TIPM is different than the CAN BUS system which is the style of ECU protocol that Chrysler uses. The TIPM functions everything that a normal relay box would but uses a circuit board with integrated relays to control circuits. This is my level of knowledge in both the CAN BUS and TIPM systems,

Thanks for chiming in and dropping some knowledge, but that's way above my skill level.  I don't even know what to do with that info.  I can only assume these are functions that the IPM can and does control.  Which would only be a 2006 and newer truck.

Class B, ISO 9141, SCP, Class 2, and KWP2000 all were allowed methods of powertrain communication under OBD II until 2008, at which time controller area network (CAN) became the mandated protocol for emissions-related modules.

 

History:

The (CCD) bus - mid-1980s to 2002

baud rate of 7.8125 kbps.

All Dodge RAM VANs and PICKUPs,  Including 2ND GEN 24 valve pickup trucks.

Chrysler first introduced their Chrysler Collision Detection network (CCD) in the mid-1980s. Although the CCD network worked well and was reliable, it didn’t meet the new mandate set out by the S.A.E. In order to accomplish this, a faster network was required.

 

The (PCI) bus (J1850 VPW) - 2003 All Chrysler vehicles up to 2007 or 8.

1st was 1998 DODGE INTREPID, by 2003 All Chrysler vehicles models Including 3ND GEN RAM pickup trucks.

NOTE: (2001 3ND GEN RAM 1500 GAS ENGINE ONLY (PCI) bus)

Beginning in the mid 1990s the Chrysler Programmable Communication Interface (PCI) bus network was introduced. There were several advantages to this system over the previous CCD bus network such as; the transfer rate of information is quicker; reprogramming of modules over the bus network now possible; single wire outlay using a central module or diagnostic junction port, for easier system diagnostics.

 

The (CAN) 2008 + All domestic and foreign vehicle manufacturers, ISO 15765-4.3:2001 CAN became the mandated protocol.

Following in 2004, Chrysler again replaced their communication network. With the introduction of a new mandated protocol, they began using a Controller Area Network. This network came in 3 forms: CAN-B, CAN-C, and CAN-C diagnostic.

CAN-B network has an operating speed of 83.3 kbps.

CAN-C bus has a baud rate of 500 kbps, giving it a near real time transfer rate. 

CAN-C diagnostic bus is a separate circuit operating at 500 kbps.

Beginning in 2004 with the redesigned Dodge Durango, Chrysler began implementing the use of the Controller Area Network protocol and bus standard.

The Dodge Ram was updated for the 2006 model year. One notable addition was the "Mega Cab"

First, thank you for the knowledge, I'm ok with being wrong. I don't know everything.  But I do know that the IPM was introduced in 2006 and it seems like you are also agreeing with that. 

 

  You are saying that your earlier post, where you listed all the different "parameters" (I don't know what to call those) are for J1850 VPW (2003-2007)?

  But right at the top of the list, it says FPW/IPW Integrated Power Module and every single one of those items says IPM in it, which means that would not refer to anything before 2006. Just seems like this is something for 2006+ to me, but again I don't know a lot about this area I am trying to learn. 

  Also just as I stated at the begging all of our trucks (3rd gen section here) run off of a CAN interface I can only assume that it's a different protocol than that used in the newer (2006+) IPM trucks.

Which to me reads that PCI was introduced in the mid 90's, but then you say it was from 2003-2007, then you say that CAN took over in 2004. So was 2006 a new/different version of CAN Bus?

Again I really I'm in new territory, and here to learn.  I just want to make sense of it.  Also, this is all way off topic.
