Good day everyone,

Have a few questions regarding rear main seal replacement.  1. Do I need the $200 tool to install the seal? 2. What kitsch have you guys used to not need the tool?  I have to replace my seal, but don't want to have to dish out extra money for a tool I may use 1-2 times.

Thanks,

Tim

Oh I'll have to do more research then.  My father in law told me I needed the tool, but idk if I can justify $200 if I'm only going to use tool once.

Thanks.

Michael,

Thanks that looks like an easy job once trans is out.   Hope you are recovering well!

my boy and I replace the rear main on his 3rd gen truck that was looser than those used on our 2nd gen trucks.  We bought one with a thin metal sleeve that helps guide it in without destroying the lips of the seal, DARN I just threw it away after sitting on my bench for a couple of year.  But get the kit and is easy. The old one on the 3rd gen was pulled out by and and barely in the motor. the new one is a tight fit. one the trans is out it is easy.

Any good rear main seal kit should have a plastic install sleeve to help you get the lip of the seal over the snout of the crank.  Should pretty much slip on.
