Found out today I have a 2 piece head bolt. So truck is parked for now and i found a new long block for 3k. Ideally if im going to swap the motor I want to build it prior to. All supporting mods aside whats the best set up for a vp44 truck? I know we tap out around 700 hp which suits me fine. I think I would like to do a cam and cnc ported head. I dont plan on exceeding 3500 rpm so do I need valve springs? Fire ring or o ring ( compunds are probably in the future) what else am I missing should I step up to 14mm head studs?

  • That is the first ray of sunshine I have heard. Is love to tighten this transmission up but for sure dont want to grenade the transmission. I'll call power driven/dap and see what I can do

  • Basically, the pump section pulls out of the reservoir, and there is a large o-ring. As for the pump vanes, I've never opened up. Rest is just o-rings. Be sure you can get the o-rings first before ope

The power steering pump makes me nervous oil in it looks like crude oil. I hate to get a reman and it be worse then I one I have. I did find a link talking about rebuilding it. But the link didn't work I also found a article on this site about hot roding the pump ( drilling out the orfice slightly) and I'll for sure do that. Any chance anyone has a working link on how to rebuild these? Or know of a reliable aftermarket pump.

You may want to consider @Mace 's vacuum pump removal / direct mount power steering pump / remote reservoir conversion. The vacuum pump would be replaced by a small electric vacuum pump. I did this conversion myself and I a very happy that I did it. The best part of this conversion was a far better performing power steering pump, a see-through remote power steering reservoir that is very accessible, and the elimination of the gear-driven vacuum pump / power steering pump combination.

I went one step further and remounted the APPS throttle control from the engine onto the brake booster / master cylinder mounts.

The first two photos are my truck and the third photo is Mace's truck.

I'll have to look into it for sure. Any idea the electrical load of the remote vacuum pump?

Power Steering fluid should be changed every 30k miles. You can pull the reservoir housing off so you can rebuilt most of the power steering pump. There might be screens inside. Make sure to get a new o-ring first.

Vacuum pump seal you can get for like 20 dollars at Cummins supplier. I get mine from Rocky Mountain Cummins super cheap.

Awesome is the power steering pump rebuild pretty self explanatory?

It does well. I run my hvac and exhaust brake on it and it hasn’t let me down…yet. I just run the Dorman one too.

@Mace could you build an article for the electric vacuum set up?

My vacuum pump (a Dorman) is protected by a 15 amp fuse. The vacuum pump probably draws around 8 amps.

Thats not bad at all thank you for checking my water methanol pump draws about 15 and im looking at adding a small fan for the tran cooler and ac condenser seat heater and cooler any possibly upgrading the factory raido so electrical power is high on my worry list. Thankfully im in texas and have my grid heaters disconnected.
