Can anyone help me? I was talking to a representative about my truck the other day :| :red and he breifly mentioned that I have a 45RE Auto Transmission. Cany You tell me what that means exactly. :smart I bought this truck to tow our 5th wheel trailer, about 6tons, and I was wondering if I should upgrade the torgue converter. :$: I am a novice to mods and really don't know too much about transmissions either so any help there would be greatly appreciated. :cheers Thanks, mab

45RE actually has a meaning... 4 = how many gears. 5 = the maximum amount of torque. (500 foot pounds of torque) <- I'm pretty sure of it... There are several models of transmissions... 45RE, 46RE, 47RE, and 48RE Some good reading... http://www.transmissioncenter.net/dodge ... gAodbjThQQ

Thank you for the info. I did some reading on the website and couldn't find anything about a torgue converter for the 45RE, there was plenty of info on the 46RE, 47RE & 48RE's. Is this just a very small transmission and probably not too great for towing or did I understand that wrong? Thanks,Mike :burnout2

I'm sorry to say I'm not very knowable about the newer auto trans at all...But as far as I understand the RE45 is the smallest trans built that I know of... I'm hoping some other knowledgeable person will step up and help out but as you can see I'm just getting started... But I'll dig for you and find out from another forum and get some know brought back to you... :cheers

I don't know anything about auto trannys. But from what I've read, and since you're pulling 12,000lbs, I would say get an updated torque converter and valve body. I think I'd do it just for "peace of mind". That's a lot of weight to pull with a "marginal" tranny.

Thanks again for your time and efforts. I agree that it looks like it is the smaller trans and proabaly needs some help with the larger load. If I find some more info I will get it posted for everyone as well. :cheers :thumbsup

Mab, in an 01, you will have a 47re...not a 45. The problem with these autos is that they were designed to live behind gassers and not behind the torque of the mighty Cummins. Therefore, if you up your horsepower or tow heavy (or both)...it will likely go **** up in no time. As already mentioned, a triple disk torque converter and valve body will do wonders. Theres lots of good tranny parts out there...but shop around, since prices can really vary and when you go with the big boys, you pay a lot for their name and experience along with the hard parts. Let me know if you need more info on parts/builders.

Hi Dr Evil,Thank You for clearing that up for me. I was very nervous after reading what the numbers stand for and then thinking that my transmission was rated at 500lb-ft. The Power system I have on my truck actually delivers 648lb-ft and I was afraid I had possibly started to tear something up. I did verify with Dodge that the transmission is the 47RE. Also I would be interested in knowing about the info on upgrades. If you can post it hear for others that would be good and hopefully it is OK with Moparman as well. Thanks again for helping to clear that up. :cheers MikePS: I have to update my signature as well :D

Doc is absolutely correct. The 47RE tranny was used from 1995 to 2002? I think. The 4 is four speed and the 7 is the 7th "edition" of the tranny. I don't know what the "R" stands for, but the "E" is for electronic controls. If you had a 47RH, the difference is hydraulic controls. If you want to know more about the 47RE, Dave Goerendshttp://www.goerend.com is the guy to get ahold of. Tom

Sorry, I kind of dropped the ball on this one... There are lots of good tranny places to go to: http://www.goerend.com/ http://www.htstransmissions.com http://www.suncoastconverters.com http://www.dieseltrans.com http://www.dreviltransmissions.com (no, Im not affiliated in any way) http://dunriteconverters.com/ I suggest really shopping around and asking LOTS of questions because prices vary a LOT and sometimes, you pay a higher price just for the name of the builder. And expect to pay at least 2-3k to get something good.

If the "7" in 47re stands for the max torque it will handle then with the truck in stock form the tranny should be good then cause my truck only puts out like 460 Ft Lb of torque peak torque. Why would these tranny's not handle that. Maby i misunderstand something here so correct me if i am wrong. I think I got something mixed up here.

Or is it the tranny will handle the torque but the torque converter wont. I am not sure. can someone clear that up for me.
