  1. Now thats a good point. I wasnt thinking about the tone wheel. But as long as the timing sensor remained in its proper position, why would it affect it?
  2. As little as I understand about that technology I couldn't not wonder why someone wouldn't have or didn't use a shielded ribbon cable but I was no one to be second guessing the discussion either. All I know is as it was explained to me, the farther they got the PSG from the VP, the more problems they supposedly had with interference. It just seems like the most logical thing to do is to move the item away from the heat which is most susceptible to the heat. If you cant move it far enough away somewhere like the firewall or fender, at least build an raised height base for the PSG which allows it to sit up and out an inch or two away from the housing and engine block. That would also give it far more fuel volume running underneath it. Again, I have no tooling available to create such a base so my ideas are just grains of salt.
  3. The AC noise or electrical resistance variable may be worth more attention since given what some of you have found and think, I'm not sure that we can blame as much on heat as we currently are. Thats not to say heat isnt the issue but maybe not the culprit I was thinking. My new toy laser is really fun but I havent had a chance to do any testing with the truck. Anyways, years ago during one of the many lengthy conversations I had with Chip, we were discussing the consideration whereby moving the PSG altogether sounded like the way to go. But unfortunately "supposedly" there was people (how many?) who had attempted this but found that interfering AC noise only increased as the ribbon wire was lengthened. Too bad too..... Or maybe someone more understanding of the process could do better????? Not me of course.....
  4. This is ALL for conversation ONLY. Since none of us have a Bosch test bench or are one of the engineers who built the contraption, we can only speculate with the best intentions. Of the past 10 years I've been on these forums discussing the VP Mike is the only person I've seen who has personally dissembled one with the intention of research.
  5. Does anyone know how to decipher the PSG date codes under the bar code?
  6. The older these ISB trucks get, the more this will become an issue as the money is moving over to the newer generations. I think the only thing keeping these trucks around is their proven reliability and capable HP with the high performance world like truck and tractor pulls.
  7. And/or higher engine temps?
  8. Ed I'm just poking fun at ya..... Just poking fun.
  9. Interesting discussion guys..... For whatever reason, I enjoy these topics. It sure would be handy to have a Bosch test bench. Has anyone watched video's like these http://www.yourepeat.com/watch/?v=yfrIjl3JXfg Or seen websites like these http://www.remmington.info/edc%20diesel%20pump.htm and http://www.vp44diesel.de/en/home All foreign and they seem to know a heck of a lot more about these injection pumps than you can find from most USA companies who seem to only sell the whole core and not bother with any of the understandings. I feel like we're talking about some FDA regulated drug or food whereby everyone is told and believes that somethings healthy or bad only to find out years later the complete opposite. We "think" we understand the VP but hopefully we dont find out in a few years how wrong we are..... And Ed, Frank was alive and popular in the 70's. I could be way wrong but given how "altered" that era was I would wager his substance intake was more than just an annual glass of wine.
  10. I agree..... The temps these VP's run at "should" be well within the electronics safe zone. If thats the case then whats causing the PSG transistors to short out? It MUST be heat from something, but what? Excessive heat from overheating the solder causing crystallization or from resistance over time from the crystallization resulting in amperage increases? I'm really just tossing out ideas here since I'm at a loss..... That said, when your engine temps are in the 210*-220* range and your pulling hills, is the VP getting hotter or is the fuel running through it still dissipating enough heat to keep in under 160*. Well since the P0168 code is rare then I guess that would lean towards yes.
  11. This may sound like a stupid idea but what does anyone think about using house pipe insulation on the fuel lines around the engine area? Because it seems that the farther from the fuel pump you got Mike, the hotter the fuel lines got. If there was more insulation around the fuel lines then the radiant heat should have less affect. No? The reason I was thinking pipe insulation too is merely because its cheap and easy to use whereas real fuel line insulation isnt cheap and you have to get the type that Velcro's on otherwise you have disconnect the lines.
  12. Are we posting famous quotes now? How about "necessity is the mother of all invention". Seems to be the most logical approach..... Zappa was probably just high when he said what he said.
  13. I understand Chip was selling performance boxes which were supposedly more VP "friendly" than other main stream boxes by not creating the internal heat as others. Cant say one way or the other how true this was either but it did make me wonder. Especially when I could pick up an EZ for a few hundred less than Chips cheapest box. But his VP's were always way more expensive than the competition too. But.....I do always go back to that hot shot driver who had 1 million miles on a factory OEM VP44 and he coincidentally had one of Chips boxes. Hmmm..... I used to have long lengthy conversations with Chip and he had a lot of interesting points of views and history behind what he knew. Strangely though, as the years went by he sometimes contradicted himself by telling me something completely different in regards to the same question and situation. Maybe all that means is what he knew evolved with what everyone learned over time or some other reason. Either way he was always more than happy to talk and help. Anyways, I went out and bought a laser thermometer and plan on running some tests myself before I go changing everything around. Man those things are EXPENSIVE too.
  14. Good info Mike. Thanks for the update.
  15. I'll check and see how much they are and where to get one.
  16. I'd love to be able to install a device called a "fuel chiller" which merely ties into the A/C refrigerant, running a fuel line through a housing cooled by the A/C compressor. The only problem being that it wouldn’t be cheap or easy to reroute the A/C lines. But the device supposedly works amazingly. I’m just anxious to see what Mike comes up with. I really need to invest in a laser thermometer…..
  17. How hot was it when you first got there? Meaning the running temps of the VP instead of 10 min after shutdown. Heat soak is bound to get things toasty. Also, what was the outside temperature? On a side note.....do you think it would be worth the effort on installing insulation wrap on the fuel line length around the engine area and also maybe even placing an insulation heat barrier between the hot engine and the VP? Most install a heat shield between the air filter and the turbo so I would think the running temp of the engine "could" radiate the VP.....? Kinda along the same lines as what I found out about my exhaust pipe heating up my transmission so I installed a heat blanket and reduced tranny temps by around 30*-40*.
  18. I'm getting the 13125-OK-HD. Supposed to hold 425 at the wheels. I've asked more than once if this is the correct clutch for my HP and trailer weight and they keep telling me yes so..... Thanks everyone too for the advice but did anyone change their input shaft seal or should I bother?
  19. Wow..... Did you have help? Or are you that large green guy.
  20. Good points rancher and a valid rebuttal about not really knowing the fuel temps in the first place. There is two fuel temp codes and I'm understanding that if there isnt any code then it may take a superior scan tool to read them, like at the dealer. All I can say to that is the information I've gained so far are from those who have taken temperature readings with laser temp gauges and those who have Edge modules which are capable of monitoring fuel temps. And I know its terribly crude but my "hand on the PSG" test has to be reasonably in line with other drivetrain components I can compare. Touch the engine thermostat and you know its close to what the dash says. Touch oil filter and you can see the differences in temp. Since I have gauges on the differential and tranny too, I can use their running temps in comparison by how hot or cool they are. If its too hot to touch for mere seconds then its well over 150*. Yes, there’s no substitute for a gauge but at this moment I dont have one and I have to rely on others (like what Mike finds out) to understand what’s happening in regards to fuel temps.
  21. In regards to electrical disturbances, I think its important to include that I was towing a 5th wheel whereby the truck is also technically plugged directly into the house batteries of the trailer so could the lower charged batteries of the trailer cause enough interfering draw from the alternator, and possibly truck batteries, that it threw a phantom issue with the VP? I know I'm reaching here but it sounds logical..... Any input? And with that said, I'm going to test my batteries and alternator just to be sure they're on the up and up.
  22. I was hopping that I could get away with keeping them mounted together but if its going to be a pain then it doesnt seem worth it.
  23. I never liked getting those things lowered. Cant wait to see what temperature numbers you come up with. And do be careful when pointing that laser because I understand its very easy to skew the reading with other surrounding hot items being so close.
  24. I'm ordering a South Bend and thought it would be pertinent to know what you guys have had to do to change the clutch in my 5 speed. Any things I should watch out for or anything I need to get before I start. I'm assuming I'm going to need a tranny jack and in saying that, do I have to split the tranny and transfer case if I have a tranny jack? Thanks.
  25. Well come on then..... Lets see some numbers.
