grandpa's truck what to do
- Does your truck play the flute?
Hmmm interesting, I will look into all of that. Thanks guys.- New tire recommendations
Its a drilling platform, first one I ever saw in person. I've been as facinated with the structures as the ships that carry them. Right now its in Port Angeles Wa, on its way to Seattle for repairs. Its been in the news, I guess there are greenies protesting its arival...well just about anywhere. It's slated to head to seattle in a few days. The Toyo tires are the Open Country LT-285-70R17, I only put 80 miles on them but man are they quieter than my other tires. Yes drill rig of some sort, I had the name yesterday but I forgot it. I looked it up, it's the Polar Pioneer.- Does your truck play the flute?
I know that sounds like a weird question, but a few years ago my truck developed this weird noise from 40 mph and up. It sounds like its coming from the drivers side wheel. The only way I can describe it is a high pitched flute sound. For a long time I thought it was a wheel bearing but I would bet that if a wheel bearing was that dry it would have destroyed itself after all these years. I am now leaning toward a U-Joint, either in the short shaft or in one of the hubs. Any thoughts from all you Dodge experts? By the way with the super quiet tires installed yesterday I can hear the noise a lot better now. Deric- New tire recommendations
I just got back yesterday from Les Schwab, all new tires and wheels, I was still on the 16.5 wheels of which they are either slowly disappearing, no longer available and too expensive and hard to find. I went with Toyo tires. I went with the Open Country A/T II on the Ultra 178 Mongoose 17inch. By the way did any of you know about this weird spacer that Dodge put on these trucks on the passenger front? It was news to me. I'm gonna clean up the old wheels and the tires of which have 50% left on the treads and sell them. You can still see the siping marks on them. The manager at Les Schwab said I should be able to get $400 for them no problem. The new setup....$2100!!! YIKES! But you know something, I bought this truck in 2001, and its been such a great truck, and I can't believe its in this good of shape after all these years. No major issues except the tranny unlocking and locking up which from this site I was able to finally fix!- Torque Converter Lock / Unlock Issues

JUst wanted to give an update, as of yet the transmission has been flawless!!! I took it to the shop today and had the tranny flushed, new filter and new and gasket installed. The guy at the shop said that everyting looked perfect inside. Not bad for never having anyting done from new to 131,000 miles. I told him about the Diode circuits as discussed here and he said he had heard of that as a fix as well. Thanks again for the help on here guys, I will be donating soon...as soon as I get my motorcycle out of the shop. I dropped it off today thiinking that I was only going to have rear tire replaced and ended up needing both done and the fork seals need replaced as well, so my bill went from $300-$800!!! Oh well you play you pay am i right? SLAP IT HIGH!!!- Seat covers
Hey all, I was wondering if anyone has put seat covers in their trucks and what ones were good or bad? I need to put something on my seats, as the driver side seat is in pretty bad shape. Its a 99 2500 and when I bought it in 2001 the seat already had a rip on the drivers side. Well that has turned into a really bad seat tear. I want covers that fit really nice. Any ideas out there? Talk to me Goose.- Torque Converter Lock / Unlock Issues

Hahahahaha I'm usually more scared of them than they are of me, ;)- Strange hiking experience in the Sierras
Hmmmm I never noticed it before but that looks kind of like a teddy bear. LOL Don't mind me I'm just entertaining myself today.- Strange hiking experience in the Sierras
Great pictures!!! Out here on the Olympic peninsula I run into black bear quite often while out riding my dual sport motorcycle. The smell hits me way before I see the bear. Also Elk have a distinct smell as well. Here is a picture from a few years ago while out hunting. I used the Ruger 44 mag Super Red Hawk as a reference .- abs and brake light
Mine did the ABS and check engine light, along with the spedo not working. It turned out to be the speed sensor in the rear end. $25.00 and 10 minutes later I was back in business.- Noob
Thanks guys, I'm feeling optimistic about the alternator repair.- Torque Converter Lock / Unlock Issues

Ok just got a call, the alternator is all rebuilt with better than stock parts. This guy always replaces with upgraded stuff. Cost is $95.00 and that was him pulling and re-installing the unit. Not bad compared to the cost of a new one. Also with this rebuilt, I know its been tested ok. It may be a few days before I can post the results, and on the 26th I'm pulling the trailer a little less than an hour away, so I'll report back as soon as I get it all tested. Thanks guys!- Torque Converter Lock / Unlock Issues

Ok update so as to add to the collective information here. I went home and started up the truck and put my Fluke on the negative battery and the alternator. Here is what I found. DC output to the batteries AC noise Then I drove it to the Auto Electric shop that I mentioned, and he put it on a electrical analyzer and came up with 500mv AC which he said 60 or 70 is acceptable, so tomorrow he's rebuilding my alternator and I will report back. This would be so cool if it fixes it finally!!!- Torque Converter Lock / Unlock Issues
Just joined a few minutes ago. 1999 having the same issues again, have owned this truck since it was 2 years old, and have experienced this problem off and on for years. Added the "noise filter" no go, getting frustrated. We recently purchased a 27 ft travel trailer, drove from Washington to Oregon, 5 hours there and 5 hours back, no issues with the tranny, then on a trip to Puyallup Washington which is 3 and a half hours from our house the blasted hunt issue started. Unlock, and lock. At a couple of points in the trip I pulled over and shut the truck off for 30 seconds and then resumed and the problem was gone for about 30 minutes then it returned. I have printed out all 10 pages of this thread and will start looking more aggressively into what is causing this issue. We have a guy here that owns and operates an auto electrical shop, I bet money if I show him these pages, and have him do some testing he will know exactly what is going on. I'm heading home for lunch and will do the fluke meter test to start things off. I have to get it fixed, and I really need to get my transmission serviced, I've owned the truck for almost 15 years and have only put on 50,000 miles and have never had the tranny looked at. Will post after lunch what I find. Thanks guys, I am so excited to have found this site.- Noob
Hey Guys, Deric (deej) Kettel here. I own a 1999 Dodge Ram 2500 4X4 with the 5.9 diesel in it. I bought it back in 2001 and absolutely still love the truck. As a member, moderator and admin on a popular Kawasaki site, it feels weird starting at the bottom again on a new site but I read some of the posts related to a problem I am experiencing and have experienced as far back as 2004 I really appreciated the cooperation I read in all of the responses here. It really sounds like you have a bunch of good guys that are willing to spend the time helping each other out. I'll post in the appropriate forum on my Transmission hunting/locking and unlocking issue, but for now;' I'm glad to have found this site. I was a member on a couple of other popular Dodge sites about 8 years ago, but they seemed to have gone the way of selective membership, paid sponsorship and even trying to make a profit charging to even be members. I would rather donate than be required to pay for great advice. Free exchange of ideas and information still continues to be one of my favorite things left in this world today. Anyway, I'll post up my issue in the right thread as soon as I get more time. Talk to you all soon. - Does your truck play the flute?
