Oil leaking out the draft tube
Ok, this morning I zip tied an empty water bottle to the end of the crankcase draft tube so tube would drain into the bottle. Went on a 12 mile road test. It filled that bottle a third with engine oil. The next road test, same mileage, only a half in of oil in the bottle. The next two road tests, one with the vacuum line disconnected from the vacuum pump, no oil at all in the bottle. This engine has a lot of crankcase pressure. It is a bone stock engine. I was leaning toward the vacuum pump but not sure now. Truck has 300,000 on the clock.

Oil leaking out the draft tube
Hello, I have a guys 2001 Dodge that is losing about two to three quarts of oil out the breather tube in 50 miles. This tube comes out the side of the lifter/pushrod cover. The truck runs fine and is not underpowered but there is also a good deal of blow by coming out the oil fill at the rocker cover. Right off the bat I’m thinking bad rings but I’ve read some other forums that said a bad vacuum pump could cause this also. It started happening all of a sudden which causes me concern that it might be a vacuum pump if that can cause it. Thoughts?

Radiator failure
I’m thinking about changing out the radiator in my 2000 Dodge. Anyone have an opinion on the all aluminum radiators. I was looking at those made by Mishimoto. I’ve always changed my coolant every two years and and run the Fleece Performance Collins system by-pass. I’m just trying to be proactive here and replace it before it’s decides it wants to be replace in the middle of no where.

Fuel pressure gauge and pressure

NV4500 broke...
If I was at the McCall RV Park I’d come over and give you a hand.

Poorly running, missing badly, 2006 CR.
Thanks AH64ID. This thing, imho, is a little more than rough. This rough idle shakes the truck and I can feel it while driving it at 50 mph. Ya I recommended to him only new injectors from a reputable source. I alway refer people to this website and forum for the correct information. This site has been gold for me with my 2nd Gen.

Poorly running, missing badly, 2006 CR.
A friend/customer brought me his 06 CR to have the mode and blend doors in the heater box replaced. I get that done and take it out for a test run. It runs like crap. Idles like a gas engine with a spark plug wire off. I mention this to him and he says it’s alwaÿs run like that and another shop couldn’t find anything wrong with it. I think he bought this truck running like this. The truck had about 160K on it and after reading here on some of the CR injector topics I’m going to suggest he replace the injectors. Is there any way to diagnose a bad injector without a high end scan tool?

Might need a turbo
Thanks everyone for your replies. I feel a lot better about it. I’m going to leave it alone. Looking at your turbo inspection diagram after checking that way there is no play at all.

Might need a turbo
Thanks John. I might be looking for problems that don’t exist. I baby this truck so I’m always looking at things trying to catch things before they go out. My first check engine light in 17 years two weeks ago up in Idaho. The APPS went out. Thanks to Micheal and this forum I carry an extra APPS, a Timbo.

Might need a turbo
Return home from our trip up to McCall, Idaho without a hitch after installing the new Timbo APPS at the RV park. Started doing a service on the truck here at home and noticed a little side play in the turbo shaft. Don’t know how much play but it’s enough I can feel it. I’m thinking I should replace it now before it gets worse. Anyone recommend a good stock replacement turbo? The truck is a 2000. Mostly stock. I’ve added Edge Easy box, FASS lift pump, a 4 inch exhaust turbo to Tail pipe and a PakBrake exhaust brake system. Truck has 110,000 miles on it. I don’t want a rebuilt turbo, I prefer new without breaking the bank. Appreciate any opinions Thanks, Wes.

Dead pedal I think
I had Timbo with me in my spare parts box. I almost changed it out before I left the house. Ordered another one while here at the RV park so it should be waiting for me when I get home. I thought you were somewhere around there. Do you have a repair shop or just work out of your house. The reason I had spare was because of you and this forum so I thank you for this. Get the Timbo. Less money and a better APPS. Since installing this one I’ve noticed smoother acceleration.

Dead pedal I think
Had a shop on McCall scan the system and it was the APPS. I carry a spare and installed it today. So far so good.

Dead pedal I think
Well I think my apps finally started acting up on my 2000 CTD. We’re on our way to McCall Idaho for vacation, were a little south of Council and slowing for construction I accelerate just a little, about 25-30 MPH, to get through the construction and the throttle does nothing then picks up and acts normal. Of course the check engine light comes on and stays on. It acts up one more time while slow acceleration going through McCall. Get to the RV park and after the second start up the light goes out so it probably won’t have a code. Will have to get a code reader at NAPA tomorrow. I’ve got a new APPS with me, just hope the RV Park lets me work on it. I’m sure that’s what the problem is. It’s ironic that last year a friend was having problems with his 2001 Dodge up here.

Rattlesnake Fire, Idaho - 2018
What I would like to see happen is some form of legislation that holds the various environmental organizations financially and criminally accountable for these fires when its because of their policies that were pushed through with their sue and settle tactics.

Rattlesnake Fire, Idaho - 2018
That certainly isn’t good news. Hope it changes for the better soon.

Rattlesnake Fire, Idaho - 2018
Yes they are. Almost makes you wish summer wouldn’t come.

Rattlesnake Fire, Idaho - 2018
Will do. Sometime in the Month of June next year.

Rattlesnake Fire, Idaho - 2018
We were just up there in June and it was beautiful. Next year I’m going stop in and say hi. We’re burning up here in California too. The Carr Fire up at Redding was started by someone pulling a trailer with a flat tire causing sparks. Officials haven’t reported yet what’s started all the other fires in the state. You almost hate for summer to arrive anymore.

Rattlesnake Fire, Idaho - 2018
You are right on with this. I wasn’t going to chime in because it will get political but I can’t help it. In my opinion the increased numbers and severity of fires year after year is all because of a political/environmental agenda that is failing miserably and they won’t own up to it. The environmental extremists in this country have a stranglehold on government through a tactic known as sue and settle. They have been locking up public land and pushing for more and more wilderness for decades and continue to do so in the name of saving some endangered anything. Why? It’s all about money they rake in from tax payer funded grant money for “research”. The Center for Biological Diversity is the largest culprit in doing this. They grossly manipulate the endangered species act in order to accomplish this. Our wildlands burn up every year because more and more ground is locked away from public access with roads being destroyed not just gated and locked. You cannot access the land to fight the fires and more of it is allowed to grow unchecked creating more and more fuel. Then when it burns up they conveniently blame “climate change” instead of pointing the finger of blame on themselves. In their attempt to save everything they are killing it. Sorry for my rant. That’s why i didn’t want to chime in.

Camshaft lifter inspection cover
Ya I just went ahead and remove the injector pump. It’s just to tight a fit with it in there and trying to fit it back in will lead to tearing up the new gasket. I had to remove the starter to make sure where it was leaking from. A lot of work for a stupid gasket. You’d think after 40 years of mechanicing I’d be used to this. I’ll still take my Dodge Diesel over a Ford. Have a PSD waiting in line for injector o-rings.

Camshaft lifter inspection cover
Need some help. I have to replace the camshaft/lifter inspection cover on the driver side of the engine. After removing the starter and the fuel filter bowl and lift pump bracket It looks like I am going to have to remove the injector pump to accomplish this. Does the Injector pump have to come off to remove this cover.

What’s the weak link?
Seems like Dodge didn’t learn anything with the inferior lift pumps when they went to the VP44. Seems once you get rid of that factory lift pump that it takes care of several potential problems. I changed out the one on my 24 valve about 6 years ago and don’t regret it. Problem I just found out from my son is that in California once you put a flat bed on a truck it increases your registration fees and your required to stop at truck scales. Government gets you coming and going.

What’s the weak link?
Thinking about getting another Dodge Diesel for towing and have found a great looking 97 12 valve Duelly long bed. Only 166,000 miles on it. I want to go through it, pull the bed off and build a flatbed for it to haul my quads and possibly tow my travel trailer. I currently have a 2000 5 speed that is great but thinking of adding another one to my stable. I’m just wondering what the weak link, Achilles heal is on them, like the lift pump is on the 98.5 to 02 models. How are they to build for torque and power for towing?

2001 CTD surging, bucking and no power.
Thanks. I’ll let him know when he calls tomorrow to give me an update. It’s hard to diagnose these things over the phone but this website is a valuable source of info. It’s saved my butt many times. I try to donate when I can and always do after obtaining info. Will just wait this time until I get home since this RV Park doesn’t have a secure WiFi.

2001 CTD surging, bucking and no power.
Go all the way to McCall RV Park in McCall Idaho from my home in Grass Valley, Ca and I still get calls from a friend whos 01 Dodge sounds like it lost a VP44. Problem is he’s in Olympia Washington on a trip with his Travel Trailer also. Seems he installed a Air Dog some years ago but did not install a fuel pressure gauge to monitor it. He called me this afternoon and said it’s bucking and surging and has no power. Has a check engine light on and a p0216 fault code so I looked it up for him since he has no smart phone or laptop with him. Called him on my cell and gave him the bad news. Guess I’m going to be installing a gauge for him after we both get back home.
