  1. Noticed recently that my truck sometimes doesn't fire right away, if it doesn't it will only start after turning the key to off and then start again, It is very intermittant which makes me think electrical, not noticed the WTS light yet but I'll be watching that over the next few days, no fault codes on dash but again haven't had time to drop the box on it, but over the weekend I'll get to it, I suppose it could be the VP, whatever it is I get the feeling its not going to be a cheap fix Couldn't have come at a worse time as going into hospital a week tomorrow (saturday) all being well for my hip replacement, being done on our NHS for free,1 night in hospital then home and out of action for a fair few weeks Had to go to a concrete plant today to a Cat 930H about 35 miles away, thing is we are right in the middle of a 2 day storm, lots of roads flooded, idiots in normal cars, van and pickups stranded in flood water,my truck pulling my mobile workshop trailer was fine, came up to one flooded area on a road, 3 small vans stuck in the water my side of the road, so had tried and sucked water 3/4s of the way through, one van in front of me turned around and thought best of it, another van in front of me sat there thinking about it, I drove around him and carried on, flood was maybe 200yards long with the middle coming over the top of my 305 mud terrain tyres, as I got to the middle the idiot in the van decided he could make it too, needless to say he didn't, it was a Vauxhall Vivaro, air box is right low down. here today UK wide there are 1000's of stranded flooded vehicles, my truck was not one of them Forecast for ALL day tomorrow too
  2. That's good to know, had quite a bit of experience with engines running backwards, mainly 2 stroke Commas which were 50s/60s medium trucks with a 2 stroke diesel usually happened when pulling off and driver just about stalled the motor, you tend to never forget the noise the motor makes. The trucks you speak of were they multifuel? Or just ran diesel? I'm amazed at what this engine will happily run on . Right now the 50 gall tank is full of old gas, old diesel, some new of both and some new Cat 50W axle oil, all the old fuel was clean but there is some serious fuel filters on it anyway. One other thing, it has a in tank lift pump but it's 24v
  3. Mine was a water tanker, and yes the shift pattern is pretty strange, still getting used to it really and what with moving to a much bigger workshop haven't had much time. I have figured out that it's best to use low ratio when moving it around in tight space due to no PS, forgot last night to take it out of reverse when I put it back in the shop, hit the start button this morning and it's off albeit rather slowly 🐌.... plenty of room behind luckily. sure it would have reversed straight over the Landrover Discovery minus the body that was behind it
  4. Majority of Londoners hate the ULEZ zone but as ever mayor thinks it is a good idea....Read money making scheme...... government is cracking down on local authorities who make rules to penalise motorists so who knows what will happen. Sticker on the back will read " THE STARTER MOTOR ON THIS VEHICLE IS ELECTRIC " and I won't care who gets ****** off It's a single circuit master cylinder, there is a few options talked about on "steel soldiers " forum, I've got a complete new set of flexies to fit and and some more reading to do on what M C to use. Plenty in the US still on S Circuit its on a to do list No I didn't know -40c and -40f was the same as here we don't use f except maybe weather forecasters on the TV when they want to sound dramatic trying to scare people and it just never sinks in anyway for most Truck is a work in progress ...
  5. John, it's 1959 so 3 years older than me, been repowered at some point as I think it has the later multifuel engine but I'm still on a very steep learning curve. Spoke today to a very knowledgeable man 80 years old that runs a company here in the UK supplying parts for US EX military vehicles the original Duece and a half, the M35/M50 and the bigger M800 and the Oshkos stuff and everything in between this guy knows a lot and holds a lot of NOS parts so going to make up a list of the small parts it needs. It's been booked FOC of course for a 5 years old birthday party on the 14th of this month, only problem there is the 5 year old wants to take it home afterwards and the 5 year old is a girl As for cold weather running, there is a intake heater but at -40 and IF thats C Jeez thats cold I doubt anything is going to start right up without prep, the engine oil is listed ON the dash on a plate at straight 30w but I doubt it's this low sulphur stuff of today, I use a lot of Cat 10W/30 but that's LS so more reading I think Figured out today when trying to get it into a tight space IE a lot of steering it's much better to use low ratio, steers quite easily for no PS On the to do list fix the wipers, they are air new wiper blades, when the motors work Better seats Make the passenger bench seat actually sprung instead of just bolted to the floor Passenger screen to replace, cracked, flat laminated Bigger tyres, as big as I can find to get some gearing Make a flatbed Build a camper Go do the shopping in it Drive through the London Low Emmissions Zone, because it can and won't be charged £12.50 per day because of it's age OH and POWER STEERING Funny how on the 2nd pic it's US army number is N J 0011 my company is N and J Plant and no I didn't know when I bought it
  6. Few pictures, removed the USAF beacons as they were as big as a flying saucer. Went to the local pub in it last night was there motorcycle night, truck had it's own VIP cordoned off area Just been given 5 gallon of 10 year old gas, gone in the tank with some axle oil, also got 2 45gallon barrels of old thinners which is old but no paint in it , be fine with oil.
  7. Collected my new to me AM General M50 6x6 truck last Saturday, took a while between buying it and actually driving it back to the farm where our workshop is which BTW is also new to us (my brother and myself) we just moved into a 3000sqft shop PO of the truck told me it had fuel but if I wanted to put some in there was room in the 50 gallon tank so I took 40 litres of new but unidentified engine oil, 20l litres of gas, 20 diesel and 20 cat 50w axle oil, guess that tested the "multifuel " capability, ran perfectly, 5 speed manual syncro with 2 speed transfer box shiftable on the move with a twin disc clutch, PTO too, gearbox layout took some getting used to as both 3rd and 4th are to the rear but at 7.8 the motor didn't care what gear it was in, 6 wheel drum brakes which stop the 5 ton truck dead. I've got some repairs to do but just minor things. It's basically a REO Whistler built under licence, produced from early 50s to 1990s ish Really does need power steering though and taller tyres to increase the gearing a little Going to build a camper
  8. Trans after changing the oil and adjusting the bands now seems to be changing ok, brake accumulator now gone bad,new hydro boost arrived from Summit in 2 days to the UK Collected my AM General M50 yesterday....... biggest laugh I've had in decades, filled the tank with 40 litres of unidentifiable engine oil (new maybe 10w/40) 20 litres of petrol (gas) 20 litres of diesel and 20 litres of Cat 50W axle oil, ran great
  9. I have a crank driven mechanical lift pump, 6 psi at idle and around 20psi at anything over 2000rpm fuel goes back to basket, not checked the GPM as not got a flow meter but it's LOTS even at idle to the point of what is going back is stirring whats in the tank that much that I don't ever have a problem with hot fuel, worst it gets is pretty close to air temp, maybe a few degrees higher I've even got the filler neck return all made but never bothered to fit it, and not even 1/2" lines. I've been stuck in traffic after a long drive where the engine is hot and idling for a long time at 6 psi FP and the fuel temp does not increase much at all I was at first rather concerned about 6psi at idle when I fitted my LP but I don't bother at all now since I checked the return and if I restrict the return which I did once for a VERY short time I got well over 40psi so I believe fuel PSI is just measuring the restriction in the system, fuel flow is the important bit And don't forget over here in the UK and Europe the VP has a long history and isn't that bad at all, the main vphere is a 4 cylinder but the pump is basically the same, more knowledge of the 4 cyl vp here, pretty sure all fuel inj shops here would have the equip to build them but maybe not so much the 6cyl pump, I've asked at the fuel shop I use and they said no problem so if mine ever fails I'll drop it into them
  10. Rockauto won't ship a hydroboost so ordered a reman unit complete from Summit. I had a thought, if the accumulator is removable shouldn't take much to machine a adaptor to fit in its place with a hydraulic line to a remote accumulator, quite common on heavy plant and rechargeable too
  11. My memory is a bit hazy but I have a 98.5 and I had a seat belt light that wouldn't go out I got a used seat belt module shipped to the UK but there was also a fault with the reel in the seat back IIRC, there's a 2 core wire that goes up the back of the seat under the seat cover to the reel, it goes to a small solenoid or switch which was burnt out, I got a reel shipped which fixed it
  12. This last week my steering has been slightly heavy after applying the brakes, checked the brake pedal and turn engine off and pedal is solid straight away Question is, are the accumulators available separately ?? as this would be a much cheaper alternative for me shipping wise, checked rockauto and only showing a complete unit I resealed the hydroboost a couple of years ago and it looked fine just worn out seals due to me using ATF DOH
  13. Should have stopped and shifted to low It was a one off and the 5th I have now is much lighter AND after that I learnt the hard way to not trust a sat nav even when it's set for real trucks cos the things are stupid sometimes Already asked about a valve body and trans but no international shipping gen 2 4x4 cummins manuals are rocking horse ~~~~ here, yesterday I found a truck pretty much the same as mine for sale nearly £16k paint was perfect though, mine isn't
  14. Now remove OD and do the calc in 3rd lockup which I use 99% of the time, I've said time and again on this forum that 3rd Lockup is perfect for my truck on UK roads, I'm at 2k at 50mph, I used OD as an overdrive and never use it when towing unless downhill for a long stretch Do the calc without OD and tell me it's wrong, it will be closer to 4.55 or better
  15. spose I ought to have done bands earlier NOW the steering is going heavy after braking so an accumulator to add to the list, it's always steered like a dog so not bothered
  16. That's just it. Trans hasn't been neglected Done maybe 40k since previous owner rebuilt it, had 2 oil changes during the 40k Never got hot , never slipped according to the quad It had one 5 minute serious pull where I took the wrong turn on a tiny road with my travel trailer (not my 5th wheel the previous heavy thing) Trans oil got a bit high maybe 200 but came down straight after was about 1/2 mile or so in 1st and 2nd pulling a steep grade out of a valley, there was one point at a sharp corner where both rear tyres were howling
  17. It's 7.8 multifuel so petrol (GAS to you guys) mixed with oil or parrafin/kerosen/diesel/ engine oil/hydraulic oil/cooking oil, any flammable liquid really, apparently there is a viscosity adjustment on the injection pump, it's 5 speed manual with a granny 1st and seperate transfer box, 4 wheel drive on the rear with selectable front to become 6x6 Designed by REO and called the whistler just after the 2nd world war came into US army use in the early 50's and ran through to the 90's with various changes, was licensed to AM General and various other companies to be made bit like the Jeep. It's not speedy by any means and 50mph it's pretty much all done but average vehicle speeds in the UK i'll bet is 30 to 35 anyway and Wales just this weekend has bought in a urban reduction from 30mph to 20mphthis will spread, also as it's 1959 it is Road Tax free and MOT free here and no special license requirement as historic vehicle. Vehicle owners here are getting it from all sides with this climate rubbish even though we are a TINY island, petrol/Gas is £1.60 plus a LITRE, vehicle road tax rates are silly if the car is not emissions compliant, also cities are using ULEZ (Ultra Low Emission Zone ) to raise money by charging none compliant vehicles £12.50per day, London has just expanded it's ULEZ by a huge area, councils tried to fight it but didn't get anywhere, more cities are jumping on this, the REO is exempt. Yes there are some downfalls, isn't there always 1. No power steering, a kit is available and if I can't figure out how to do it well i'll hang my workboots up 2. Single circuit brakes, kits again are available with some parts from the later trucks, again i'll figure that out 3. Noise. the cab has no sound proofing of any kind, and the exhaust is straight through, guess army guys were tougher then, thats the easiest bit to rectify I always wanted a WW2 duece and a half, this is nearly the same but with a free to run (for me) engine instead of the straight 6 petrol in the WW2 and costs less, already got 1000litre of clean hydraulic oil and not even collected it yet See above,it should get 12 to 13mpg imperial but can carry 2.5ton off road and 5 ton on road but the amount of oil I can get makes it free, forgot I purchased 200litres of brand new axle oil on thursday for £1 a litre, that will either go straight in or go into a machine and the old filtered and thrown in It will either be great or rubbish, we'll see but it's cheap enough. I checked on tyres and I can buy part worn good military take offs slightly bigger to assist with gearing for less than I can buy 305 Toyo's for the ram Farm where my workshop is has an old shooting trailer with a ex army radio box on it and I'm pretty sure it's off of a whistler looking at other pics and sizes, and I got that for free
  18. Yes John but without the tank, going to drop my mobile workshop straight on the back and also build a demountable camper Pic not dirty side up Oh and it's not firetruck red
  19. 47RE is weak full stop but yes I do have 305 tyres BUT I only use OD downhill cruising, this puts my rpm at 60 at 2200 or so, more to do with the quad than tyres My fuel NEVER gets hot highest is right at IAT and it still goes back to the basket even though i've got everything to change that just never saw the need, my FP is 6psi at idle and 21 psi at 2200 plus where it stays pegged at 21psi, my return is quite an amount and I'm sure it is enough to churn and mix the hot return fuel with the tank fuel so doesn't matter where it returns to. I've done all the wt mods, I live in the UK so fuel is not a problem, it's always clean and is different to USA fuel, noticed recently a few things that lets say are different with how the engine starts sometimes. It's just coming up to 196k and to be fair has done some mileage this past year or so all towing but the fuel bill is rediculous, I have an unlimited supply of hydraulic oil and other clean oils some new some used so it makes sense to buy the AM and yes that is running on hydraulic oil, no road tax, no mot, dog cheap insurance and free fuel and there are quite a few here and europe and parts are easier to get here, I've been trying to get a 47re core for my truck and rebuild it..... utter waste of time here even looking, I could do with a right side fender.... over £600 to my door, long steering joint was nearly £300 the other month
  20. Dropped the pan 2 days ago, magnet covered in metal but nothing larger than paste. Used a Cometic pan gasket as I figured it was better than a cork one I had.... eeerrr wrong torqued to spec and it leaks right in the middle front where the bolt spacings are slightly wider Doesn't matter as I need to drop it again and recheck the magnet. Did the bands while I was in there..... what a pigs ear that is,put a hex on the one you CAN get to and a dumb square on the one you can't... well done I've bought a AM General M50A2 so pretty sure the ram is going so once the AM is sorted out for mobile workshop I'll be figuring out the trans, I'm just sick of wondering when the trans is going to pop and the VP too Great motor let down by utter rubbish
  21. It was £50 here before covid and Putin
  22. Sorry been really busy yes OD and lockup works fine It has been fine for maybe 200miles but I've been careful, got 300 miles to do tomorrow and had to order the trans fluid which won't be here until wednesday at £124 for 20 litres I'll try the neutral and see what happens
  23. been having problems recently with the trans in my truck (47re) sort of hanging in 2nd first time was maybe a month ago after a rather fast pull off from a standstill but after it wouldn't change up from 2 to 3 I backed off a little and it changed up, was ok for days then happened again sometimes after accelerating. This morning I accelerated at traffic lights to beat a real slow car oncoming, did over 5 miles in 2nd and no matter what I did it would not change to 3rd Got to my workshop and checked the trans oil, brown but not burnt, time to change it but it's not done 20k Had to use my truck today towing my mobile workshop, set off from my workshop to the site and after a mile or so it's ok, had a few hiccups in nearly 150miles but only after having to accelerate if I was steady on the throttle no problem, couldn't help it a few times to get the truck/trailer and 4 huge Cat batteries in the bed moving Like I said trans fluid doesn't stink but it's brown, never overheated and does not slip at all, trans supposedly rebuilt just before I bought it so done somewhere between 40 to 50k mostly towing, no codes on my 2023 software S/On Triton I've read the 2 page old post on how a 47re changes gear and pretty much decided to get the pan off, check the filter, check the 1 to 2 and 2 to 3 valves in the VB, and adjust the bands, I fitted the 2 solenoids which are wired together (can't remember what they were for) about 18months ago seem to remember I still had one in the kit I bought still to fit IIRC Am I missing anything ????? Unfortunatly it's just what I was dreading as a trans repair here in the UK is not recommended, don't think it;s electrical as no codes It has only got to last a few months as I've bought a AM General M50 6x6
  24. Not much been really busy with work, first time I've logged into here in 2 months or more. Just haven't got the room in our workshop to even get the engine parts out of the boxes, I did get stainless bolts for the cases though 3 months or so ago And me being stupid I bought a REO Whistler.... Well actually a AM General M50 (same thing) with the White 7.8 multifuel motor, sick of putting well over £500 a month of diesel in my ram, this year I'm at £7600 ish up to now, my ram does enough to the gallon it's just the miles I'm doing. Whistler is on 46 hydraulic oil and I'm in the job to get gallons of that and the best bit, no vehicle tax, no safety check per year and allowed into all low emissions zones due to age, no special license due to age and cheap Insurance, downside is slow and no p/steering actually logged into here to ask if anyone else has one or knows anything about them
  25. Yes it is, I should have said lvl0 not 1 sorry
