High Beam Indicator Stuck On

I recently purchased a 98 Ram 2500 - 12 valve.  The high beam indicator light was burnt out, or so I though.  When I removed the bulb, I realized that the light was not burnt out, but instead one of the contacts had been bent back to prevent connection.  When I replaced the bulb and reassembled the dash, the high beam indicator was stuck on.  I guess I now know why the bulb was modified.  Now the high beam indicator light is constantly illuminated.  It doesn't matter if the pickup is running or not.  On top of that, the switch is reversed.  Meaning, when I switch to low beam, the high beam light comes on.  When I switch to high beam, the indicator shuts off.  When I shut my lights off, the indicator comes on.  When I turn the pickup off, the light stays on.

Since you said that you just purchased this truck, do you know any history about the truck - particularly the headlight system. 

 

*  Are the headlights still OEM?

*  Is there one 9004 bulb for each side? (one bulb per side system)

*  Is it a sport headlight system?  (t2 bulbs per side system - 9007 bulbs for 2 outside lamps and 9004 bulbs for 2 inside lamps)

*  Does the truck have fog lights?

 

If anyone has modified the headlight system, I would start my troubleshooting there.

Headlights are OEM.

They are not the sport headlights.

No fog lights.

And the correct bulbs are currently installed.

Multi function switch maybe?? I dont know any way test it other than replacement. Mine wacked out on me but with the turn signals.

 

Any sign of the PO cutting the light wiring harnesses?

At the switch (pull knob), he tapped directly into the switch for cab lights but no signs of any tampering anywhere else.

 

It also appears that there used to be a light or something in the top of the cab.  Maybe a flashing indicator light, similar to what is used on a pilot car.  I'm not positive though.  I don't know how it was wired or if it even existed.

 

I'd ask the PO but he passed away, and I got the pickup from his son.

Do you mean the suspected lights on top of the cab? I would be suspicious of any wiring mods on the lighting circuits and try and return them to stock and see if that helps.

Check the daytime running light module under the hood, or the cable/harness where it would be if it doesn't have one. I remember having a problem with my high beam light doing something similar. It was something to do with that harness, I was bypassing something for HID's... I'm sorry I can't remember any other details but the pin descriptions are in the FSM.

I'll look into this a little more.  I don't have DRL but this seems to be a common topic in other threads.
