Smarty or Smarty Jr.

Recommended Posts

I hear people say they run there smarty on 3 or 4 with timing. I also here people talking about the Smarty Jr. and run it on 3, so what's the diff. between the two. If I got one it would be for fuel mileage and pulling with my auto trans. I really like the all natural Hp of inj. and cam but just checking the options.

I personally dont know the difference between the 2, you could probly check em out on smartys website to see the differences. ive got a smarty So6 for my 98 and i love it. I run mine on #7 which is towards the upper end of the performance tunes but i only run it because i see the best mileage on that tune. I dont hot rod my truck im in it for the mileage and thats where its best at, i think because it runs fairly aggressive timing. Plus when im towing, theres plenty of extra low end torque which is always a plus. You can also pull up and clear any dtc's you may get and you can also recalibrate your speedometer if you have non factory size tires. I personally think the smarty is a good investment for these trucks. Forthose that are in it for horsepower, it WILL roast the tires off the rim:whistle:

Is this for your '01 or your '05???? Going by your signature.

Yes, the so6 has 9 settings. You will probably never use #4,6, or 8 because those settings have no timing advance and are designed to run with a timing box or another source of advancement. I only use the odd numbers, those are all tunes with added timing accorrding to the level of fuel and boost fooling the tune does. I used the smarty a lttle bit on a 2000 that i had prior to my 98 it can be ran if you have a light foot but the higher tunes will definitely slip the converter if you get into it. Theres an economy setting i cant remember which setting it is but ive had better mileage running catcher #7 than the economy tune. Alot of it has to do wiith the way you drive, too. When i first ran my smarty in my 98 with my built trans my tires hated me:nono: but i quickly got that out of my system when i had to pluck 1100 bucks in tires out as i was getting ready to go on a road trip and was running around on dry rotted tires from the previous owner.

On a 04.5-07 you will need to run some tuning before adding injectors. The stock timing is so whacked and emissions based that injectors will make the already screaming hot EGT's run hotter, which won't really hurt the pistons so much as the turbo/manifold. The different really depends on your power goals. The Jr is good for about +100 rwhp, and the Sr is a lot more. There are a few options with the Sr you don't get with the Jr, such as rail pressure and WG on/off. Neither of those are huge for me, I suggest sticking with stock rail pressure anyhow. The WG is off on the Jr, so not a big issue. It comes down to power goals, >450 rwhp get a Sr, 450 or less get a Jr. That's all pre-injector power. 400-450 rwhp seems to be the reliability limit when it comes to oil cooling/coolant capacity, drive train (especially when loaded) and about 400 rwhp is the limit of the stock turbo if you ever see any elevation while loaded. I will add that my "limit" is a lot more conservative than some, but I don't want my stuff to break down on me.

This^^^^^!!!! I run the Smarty Revo SO 6 on default settings level 5 about 98.67% of the time. That probably puts me 350-375HP and approximately 700-750ft.lbs. torque give or take. I've still got stock injectors, stock turbo, stock cam and have just under 172,xxx on the clock....................all my mods are in my signature. I tow a 3500lb. work trailer around suburbia and normally see 18-20mpg in combined towing/empty driving this time of year. On the settings I mentioned above too!!!! I've had a couple 21mpg tanks since the "free spin hub kit" install, but I don't have enough tanks to truly say that helped any. Even though I think it does!!!!

So if running the smarty jr, will it bring down my egt's on stock truck? All I am looking for is a little bump in HP. I hate the egt's on my stock truck, it just seems to take for ever for them to come down after pulling. On top of that just running down the hwy they run hot. So if the smarty jr can lower them I will be all for it.

Yes. The reason my dad and I bought Jr's back in 07 when they were released was to decrease EGT's. The motor is built around them, but it's still hard to watch.

A Smarty JR on SW1 with default timing will do a nice job of dropping EGT's, up to 200-250° at certain loads, and give you a little more economy and about 100 ft/lbs of torque in the 1500-2500 rpm area.

You can not reprogram an 05 to turn off the OD. On the 06 and up you can and below 05 you can but the 05 was an odd year for pcm programs. You can wire in a switch to do this and DTT offers a shift enhancer as well that many absolutely love on 3rd gens. It cleans up the indecisive shifts and lock unlock you get at times with the addition of a programmer.I have a non POD smarty jr and it has been great. I dynoed it on my rig on level 3 and did 407 hp and 750 tq, totally stock except for the PSM air box mod.I get the best mileage on level 3 with no trailer, I have seen 20.5 several times but have yet to break 21. I get better mileage on the towing setting while towing than any other setting. level one isn't good for much that I have found they call it economy but it does worse here than on level 2-3.Being mine is not a POD and has an old tune in it because I have not updated it it does smoke a lot.

Update that baby! Better economy, less smoke, quieter engine, and PoD if you desire. It's free.

I will give it a try on a day when I am bored some day, last time I updated a smarty for my 02 it took me the better part of a day to figure out how to do it not to mention a trip to town for a cable and figuring out how to download a program to handle compressed zip folders ect ect ect. Suck for a computer iliterate guy like me.

Cool, that's what I am looking for. Also If I wanted to change tow/haul to no overdrive can the smarty do that too? There are times when the OD is good when hauling and then others not good.

Thanks

I prefer the tow haul switch on my 05. Without tow haul you would loose a lot of line pressure when towing. Secondly if you want it out of OD press the tow haul button twice.

The option of pushing the tow haul button twice to turn of OD only works on the 06 and newer.
