Off the grid retirement?

Recommended Posts

My wife and I are getting tired of the liberal politics in Oregon. We also would like more seclusion. We live in a log home, but dream of a more recluse lifestyle in our retirement years. We took a trip to Idaho last summer for a wedding and were impressed with the liberty you seem to have there. I've got a real estate app on my phone and there are some pretty nice places on 5+ acres for decent prices. Is there an area you'd recommend looking to settle? Must have firewood available for heating. Would rather cut it off site rather than on our own property. Getting really tired of government and carbon taxes pushing up utility rates.

There is a lot of different places available here in Idaho. You could try... http://www.blevinsrealestate.com/ It's a good friend of mine Carolyn friend. As for firewood I typically go out to the old forest fire areas and collect the slightly burnt trees for firewood. I'm solely wood heating. I'm just about self contained on power. (Solar, Hydro, Gasoline power generator, and batteries). Let's saty I've learned how to live on less than 30 Amps of 120 VAC power and do it all the time.

I think a big portio of your problem is that you live too close to Portland. Alot of the younger generation lives, and so does there crappy thinking. As for settling in Idaho, we can always use a Libertarian or conservative in Sandpoint area! Need to push out the hippies. Irony is they forget where they are sometimes. Sandpoint was voted #1 place to live. Probably only #1 for people who retire cause for me it sucks! I wish more people would move here to help create jobs, not just recluse away with their money.Probably did not make much of a case for myself in convincing you to move here, huh? :lol:We have alot more trees in our area than anywhere else in Idaho. The panhandle, that is. Any more south and you would almost think you were in AZ.Wood can be plentiful, but it takes work to get at it!

What kind of thinking does this new breed of people have? I ask cause I notice more idiot drivers. If you are in the stores you notice rudeness and weirdness. All the older folks are still okay for the most part. But, I know I need to get away from Portland.... it's literally creeped out to my neck of the woods too.

If you have not heard of or read Joel Skousens book "Strategic Relocation" I would recommend it. It is what I keep on my coffee table and it is a very popular read when people see it. Makes me glad I live in ND, the oil boom is bringing in folks from all over the nation who are causing some disturbances, there have been a couple of killings here and they are out of staters killing each other in the oil patch. The Latest killer was from Idaho. Here is another article that just came out too. http://www.shtfplan.com/headline-news/americas-death-zones-where-not-to-be-when-it-hits-the-fan_04042013 Here is a site I have in my favorites list and look at for the articles which are good at times, the discussion afterwards usually pisses me off as it is seems to be an extreme Liberal leftist Al Gore duped mentality site. http://www.off-grid.net/
