I'm get ready to do my oil & filter change and was thinking if it would be better to used 5w40 synthetic vs 15w40 dino. Now I'm real cheap, so I'm thinking here Wally World Super Tech 5w40 full synthetic, not Amsoil, Red Line or any other uppity brands. One of my questions is it's not 15w40, it's 5w40, would that be OK?

Walmart Super Tech oil is made by Shell for Walmart. I have only seen the Super Tech in 15W-40 so far. My Walmart has not had any Super Tech 5W-40 synthetic out yet that I have seen. The Walmart Super Tech oil is good oil. I use it in both of out trucks.

The info I have is that all the SuperTech synthetic and synthetic blend oils for WallyWorld are made by Warren Petroleum Products. Their SuperTech dino is made by 3 different companies probably depending on where in the country you are. This info provided by http://www.bobistheoilguy.com

Should have been more detailed. The Super Tech oils we use in our trucks is made by Shell for Walmart. To be absolutely certain, you must verify by checking each individual MSDS for each particular product.

does that mean it is Rotella in a different bottle?

Not exactly. Rotella has a very distictive additive package that you can verify by the lovely smell after an oil change. :wink:http://www.shellusserver.com/products/pdf/RotellaTCI-4CI-4.pdf My speculative guess would be that the Wally World oil is pretty close if not the same thing as Pennzoil 15W-40: http://pennzoil.com/documents/LongLife%20heavy%20duty%20multi%20and%20single%20grade.pdf Or http://pennzoil.com/documents/4.3.1+Long-Life+Gold+Heavy+Duty+Engine+Oil.pdf I have used both and I think both are good oils. I buy what is on sale. The impact on my wallet is the determining factor for me.

OK, I went by Wally World last night to see what they had and they only had 5w30 full synthetic & 10w30 full synthetic, in 1 qt. size and in 5 qt. size. I can't use that in a diesel, can I?

I am not sure which particular oil you are looking at but it sounds like regular gas engine oil. Checking the label will tell you if it is rated for compression engines. In this case, Wally World full synthetic oils are made by Shell/Pennzoil/Quaker State. http://msds.walmartstores.com/cache/347432.pdf Not sure why you want a 30 weight oil unless you are in an extreme cold climate. Walmart does sell a Super Tech SAE 30 Universal Heavy Duty Diesel Oil but I think it would not offer much if any benefit over a multi-viscosity 5W-40 synthetic. http://msds.walmartstores.com/cache/339501.pdf

I'm looking for a cheap full synthetic motor oil to use in a diesel engine. But not only cheap, also good. If Walmart full synthetic oil is cheap but not as good as dino oil, then I'd use the dino.

So far, the best deals I have seen on synthetic diesel rated motor oil is when Wally World has the Shell 5W-40 synthetic on sale. Some other places you might check for a better price but this may mean buying a 55 gallon drum of oil are your local tractor dealer and petroleum distributor. John Deere sells a 0W-40 Plus 50 that is made for them by Chevron in this area of the US. http://www.deere.com/en_US/parts/partsinfo/oils_and_lubricants/oil_0w40.html Here is a listing of the various oils Deere sells: https://jdparts.deere.com/partsmkt/document/english/pmac/36007_fb_LubricantChart_US.htm You will have to check with a Deere dealer to get a price on the 0W-40 Plus 50. Here is the sales BS on the "Church of John Deere Oil" brochure: https://jdparts.deere.com/partsmkt/document/english/featbene/DKD1801OilGuide.pdf It is good oil but unless you can buy in bulk or the parts manager is your Dad, the price is just not justifiable.

Alcorr... Make sure what every oil you pick out is a C rated oil like CI CJ... Not a S rated oil...

Is oil rated CI better than CJ and why? I believe Super Tech 15w40 Dino is rated CI. Edited by AlCorr

I just changed my oil last week and I bought Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel 5W40 for $22 for a 4 quart jug I think it was at Walmart in Detroit. In Canada that same bottle of oil at Walmart is $41. After lashing my valves, changing my oil and adding 2 cycle oil to my fuel my engine is alot quieter on a cold start even at 10 degrees without plugging it in overnight. :) In the summer I was running Mobil 1 15W50 synthetic.
