3rd Generation Dodge

This is a discussion forum of the 2003 to 2009 3rd Generation Dodge Ram Trucks with 5.9L and 6.7L Common Rail Cummins Turbo Diesel power train and drive line system.

Well I made the trip down to Parma ID with Thor. All I can say is I'm not impressed at all for towing. This happens to be the slowest truck for towing my 2000 Jayco Eagle RV. EGTs are high even running flat ground it's 800 to 1000°F at 65 MPH. Climb any hill with cruise set at 60 MPH it would trip my pyrometer alert light. Thor is a 2006 Dodge 3500 SRW, 6 speed transmission with a Valair Quiet Towing Dual Disc Clutch. 3.73 gears and 4WD. There are +50 HP DAP injectors. Now ive got performance issue vs EGTs. Cold start its got a miss or rough idle till warmed up I'm suspecting that there is a cylinder with washed rings but not enough to bother the o…

does anny know of someone or want to do the adapter for me to bolt a road ranger to a 5.9 with the fctory bell housing

  4. Hey there gang... I ran into a clunking noise that was associated with the track bar which we can see the bar moving. After inspection of the bar which Mark did for me. Come to find out that the track bar was not properly tightened last time it was installed. It managed to wear a little bit and was banging back and forth on the bolts. Bushing appear to be fine but was capable of moving just a bit and making a clunk. Now after just looking it over and reinstalling and getting the bolts tight, the clunk is gone now. Thor is going to be hauling a trailer today and then returning. My renter Mark is going to make the run for me so I can handle chasing parts for th…

  5. This is a known issue of the 2006 Dodge Ram cluster where the tachometer will be wild, erratic, or possibly dead or stuck. The fix is extremely simple. DISCLAIMER: If you do not have soldering experience please do not attempt this repair you might cause more damage to the cluster, electronics, or the truck. On Thor, since I purchased the truck the tachometer would sometimes work fine and on other days it would show wildly high RPMs like 4,000 while cruising 65 MPH in 6th gear. This is due to the fact when they manufacture the clusters they use lead-free solder and which tends to break down and then connections get weak. I just happen to buy a bra…

I want to post up about the tachometer issues on these trucks. Thor my 2006 truck had an issue with the tachometer being wildly erratic tach either dropping super low or showing way high ready vs live data tool. This is due to the lead-free solder used on the circuit board on the back of the cluster. I know I got to get some photos of the cluster removal which is super easy and doesn't take very long. Once you get the dash trim pulled there are 4 screws holding the cluster in place. I will admit reaching the plugs on the back side are rather challenging but not impossible. Once unplugged the cluster can be removed from the truck. You'll notice there is a black plastic cov…

I got a weird one for the 68s savvy , I built a 2008 68 for my customer that came in burnt and would barely move in first . long story short I built it with a ton of upgrades and everything is upgraded and gone through, vacuumed tested etc . After installing it and took it for a test drive it has no tcc lockup and it wouldn’t shift to 6th unless you release the pedal all the way , it also set code p0740 code at 10 miles of driving . I relearned the transmission and drive 32 miles with no code but same issues of no tcc engagement and only 6th by releasing the throttle pedal. Believing I did everything right ,I dropped the trans and installed anothe…

  8. Just a heads up if you have a 3rd Gen and happen to have a weak connection or on connection on the grid heater power wire it can and will pop the grid heater light and chime as well just like a fuel rail issue. If you pop the hood and don't see any fuel leaks then proceed to get to home or safe place. Get your code reader out and check I'm going to bet there is a code for grid heater performance. Once the problem is fixed and the code cleared the light will remain off. In my case I've unhooked it back in the summer time be I was having a charge issue for the batteries and forgot it was unhooked. No hard starts. Funny part is the light tripped after 30 miles of driving and…

My dad's 2005 is having phantom issues with the ABS light. Can anyone tell me before I drive to his place whether or not an OBDLinkMX+ can be of much use diagnosing the ABS system in that era of truck? I've dug around and around on the OBDLink forum (scantool.net?) and found nothing of use.

  10. https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZTRQdt1Uv/ Client called and asked me to come out and look at a oil leak on 2006 Dodge Cummins. When I open the hood I knew already. Over 200k on the injectors and most likely wiped out number 6 piston. Watch the TikTok.

  11. This is just a quickie fix for a customer that came to me asking if I could fix there A/C & heat the blower would randomly work or not work. Yeah I started at the wrong end testing the TIPM first which I found out everything was working properly. Then I moved to the blower motor itself. After removing the blower motor from the HVAC case then everything made sense. Check out the Quick TikTok. As you now see that TikTok videos are now rendered properly on the website software. There will be more of these in the future.

  13. Started by DownHomeDiesel,

We’re in a 2003 pulling a 28’ camper from OK to Breckinridge, CO down I-40 toward Amarillo. Fuel mileage had suddenly dropped to 8.5mpg. Air filter has been checked, new tires are on and truck was just aligned, fairly new fuel filter, valves were recently ran, oil level doesn’t seem to be rising, no noticeable smoke coming out of exhaust, truck isn’t overheating, possibly feels a little weak but still running well. Any suggestions on what the problem might be? Should we find a diesel mechanic or keep driving? Thanks for any help!

  15. Injector Line or Injector failures Grid Heater Light If your grid heater light comes on while driving is a sign of a high return rate to the fuel tank or the fuel pressure in the rail is dropping. In my case, I was traveling towards McCall ID and climbing a grade with my utility trailer. All of a sudden the grid heater light comes on and chimes multiple times. Which I thought was weird. I had to complete my climb up the grade for a safe spot to pull over. Once I did get pulled over I shut down and looked there was fuel everywhere. I the grid heater light comes on while driving I highly suggest you get to a safe spot and shut down as quickly as possible. Check…

Ok gang I know a lot of you wanted to see 3rd Gen articles and action in the 3rd Gen category. Here we go I'm going to start on Thor and getting it fixed up like Beast is making it a good economy shop vehicle with good pulling power. I've got a oil leak on the engine some where so I've got to power wash and hunt that leak down and deal with. I'm going to need a full 4" exhaust system most likely do muffled. I'm going to look into a Cold Air Intake and quality air filter that isn't going to pass dust and dirt being I'm still going to have to roll the dirt roads out here. I've got interior work being the driver seat is blown and the foam is gone on the outsider edge. Thor i…

Oil Change Required Tools and Materials 3 Gallons of Engine Oil 15w-40 Oil Filter Waste Container 3/8 Ratchet Oil Filter Wrench Magnet Tool (optional) Rags or Paper towels Viscosity of Oil Typically we all use the standard 15w-40 diesel engine oil for viscosity. The only time you need to change down to 5w-40 is in the dead of winter when temps are near zero for operation. I will warn this is going to be synthetic diesel oil and not very cheap. As for the 15w-40 oil I've been using it year-round here in Idaho with temps as low as 0*F to -20*F. API Specification Be aware there is an oil type specification. All diesel…

  18. Like I'm learning you might want to get a hold of the Dodge FSM and then look up all the ports used in the fuse panel and what size fuse goes where. I found a few with a larger fuse stuffed in the port. A few I found where missing a fuses completely which explains why some thing never worked right. Like I did with Thor I got the 2006 Fuse list and ran right down the list and made sure each port had a fuse that was hook up and tested good. Then I found the fuse I was chasing anyways for the tail lights. Next step would to be re-test against my RV when the snow stops again.

What are some of the common spots for front end popping noise? Typically heard when turning lock to lock but not always.

  20. This is an interesting failure that I've now had twice. While running, all the gauges suddenly zero out (tach, speedo, oil pressure, voltmeter, fuel gauge), and all the idiot lights fire up. The truck continues running. After shutting down, the engine will start, idle momentarily and then shut off. The first time it happened, I started checking connections for anything obvious, and re-seating the APPS / TPS connector seemed to resolve it. I went there first because the throttle housing has been haphazardly relocated to accommodate dual CP3s and a Banks Big Hoss intake. The harness is stretched, and I need to extend it a few inches once the proper b…
