2nd Generation Dodge Non-Powertrain

Discussion of the 1994 to 2002 2nd Generation Dodge Ram Trucks with 5.9L Cummins Turbo Diesel non-power train. This includes interior, air conditioning, heating, lighting, body, suspension, brakes, stereos, etc.

  1. I want to get a snow plow for my truck (came with plow package). My truck is L-O-N-G so not ideal but I own it. I have a couple of long runs so need full angle. How big a blade to I really need to push the snow outside the wheel track? Contrary to commercial plowing where a wider cut is time & time is money... in tight quarters a smaller blade has advantages. I'd like a poly plow to get the no rust (at least on that part) and lighter weight but cost is a big factor too. I'd need a spare set of rims & serious winter tires...

  2. i have recently noticed that when only the 4 wheel drive is engaged that the front end makes a popping sound and feels like it is hopping when i turn to the right or left. Was wondering what could cause this problem.

If you look close you can see how I supported the cut cross member to the bed frame and supported the bed floor. All bolting to the truck frame was from existing factory holes because I didn't want to drill any holes in the truck main chassi. One of the pics shows my shut off valves to my in line filter and AD100 so I can easily change out either one. There is another shut off valve next to the transfer case to not loose fuel prime too. Also notice my tall fuel filter has a protection plate. I remove one bolt and it swings out of the way for filter changing.

This started a couple of weeks ago and I cannot find any reference like it on this site; when I apply the brakes, I hear a pulsing sound only on the last few feet as I come to a stop, it sounds like the ABS system activating from a slipping wheel but I don't feel it on the brake pedal. I hear it only when the brakes are pressed, it feels almost like running over the rumble strips on a highway, the pulse frequency is related to the wheel speed. The ABS bulb passes the light test on start up so it is working, but the light does not come on to indicate a brake issue. Anyone have any ideas what this is?

Yeas, so my 4WD shifter is sloppy, to say the least. Also, in 2WD, the knob is against the dash. The rod is adjusted as much as I can adjust it and still be able to select all tcase positions. As well, sometimes when I'm in 4WD (doesn't matter if it's LO or HI) I cannot get it back to 2WD without yanking/jacking with the shift-lever for a few minutes; quite the PITA.. Is there a method or repair for these darned things?

Ok guys and girls, I have a good one for ya. I was driving to work this morning and When I stopped at a light, I heard "ting, tang, thud". Something fell from in the dash and hit my foot. I thought maybe the clutch pedal rod retaining clip fell down. I made it to work and looked on the floor. Its an E style clip almost the same size as a quarter!! Does anyone know where such a thing might have come from? I wiggled all the pedals back and forth and they didnt seem lose or anything. I will go out in the day light today and take another peek at it. Help!! I dont know if its safe to drive right now.

I don't regularly check my brakes out because to be honest, I don't put hardly any miles on my truck. I rotate my tires every 5000 miles yet I’ve only put 4000 miles on it in the last 2 years. I drive it basically only during the fall for hunting season and if it snows bad during the winter. 2 weeks ago a stop light changed and when I hit the brakes the antilock kicked in. I could tell something was wrong immediately. When I got home I found that the front rotor broke apart. It had rusted through at vents. After fixing that a few days later I could hear a squeak coming from the rear brakes. I took those apart yesterday. The caliper side has full pad wear. …

I was working on the truck today and seen this in the vent by your feet. I am thinking it is the door for the defroster? I think this has been off since last spring because I remember hearing something rattle. I could never figure out what it was. I did not notice anything unusual, but I have it set to blow air out at my feet 95% of the time or I have the windows down.

So I've been waiting to do a few things to the truck before I brought this up. I have done some searches and found some things on some other diesel sites and it seems common to the 2nd gen 4x4 trucks. My truck pulls to the right fairly consistently. I noticed it the first day , the outside right front tire is showing scrub marks and wear. I got an alignment this week at a pretty good local shop- they said it was pretty close, only a toe adjustment. Today , I swapped front tires side to side, replaced the original steering stabilizer and the two front shocks. It now rides smoother and isn't so fast to wander, but still pulls right. Next is going to be swapping out t…

I have replaced my power steering pump twice now and can't seem to get the noise to go away. When the engine is around 1100-1300 rpm and the power steering fluid is warm it makes noise and groans (Only when turning the steering wheel). It is pretty loud and can be heard in the cab. The first pump I ran penzoil power steering fluid. With this second pump I have full synthetic ATF fluid in there. Each time I replaced it I removed the return line and got all of the fluid out (Started and turned the wheel for a few seconds). Then replaced the pump, filled the pump, lifted the front end, started it and turned it back and forth until it felt good. Then refilled the pump. I only…

Hoping someone will know what this plug is for ..... Have an '02 RCLB 5speed There is a plug below the ashtray in my truck. It has a double row of 8 sockets (16) and the sockets are small. It appears to be factory installed, but I just don't know. The wiring is lengthy, and the excess was coiled up behind the kick panel - drivers side. I've been de-installing the boom box sound system, and have a RAZ (optional-non Infinity) radio. It has the auxiliary input ... Any info on the plug would be much appreciated ....

Anyone ever install an overhead console in a truck that didn't come with one? I've had the headliner down to install cab lights. No wires up there for easy connection.

  14. A few weeks ago I ordered some 3.5mm headphone jacks to try and wire up an AUX input into my radio. I did see a write-up on here for the Infinity system, but not the cd/cassette Chrysler radio with the number p04704383ah on the top. Finally got the parts in today to start in on this. Spent a bit of time looking and didn't find anything in regards to this radio. You will need - Radio - Headphone jack with internal Switch - Soldering iron - Heat Shrink - 5 pieces of wire (3x6") (2x3") - Phillips Screw Driver - Multimeter - SuperGlue - Needle Nose - Small Flat head screw driver The headphone jacks I ordered have a left / Right / Ground / and a 2 pole s…

  16. So I am attempting to get my parking brake to work and it seems like it is assembled wrong. It is a 2500 with a cummins, but the engine shouldn't matter. This is the splice for the front to the right rear cable this is the adjuster which seems to be wrong, I cannot see how ti can work this way. here is why I cannot see it work, it is attached to the right rear cable housing and seems to have no action... So it seems to me that the adjuster should be attached to the splice rather than to the cable housing, however, I am unsure as to what it really should look like. I would appreciate a pic of a good working cable and adjuster from a 2500. Thank …

I am considering using Luke's link to rebuild my track bar and tie rod ends. My criteria as always is, the best possible improvement for the money. Is anyone A where of a better solution when compared to the cost. In other words, buying all new components such as a track bar for $300 may be a better solution, but certainly not as frugal. Besides the Luke's link appears to be a permanent solution whereas a new factory or aftermarket track bar may be a temporary solution.

I am hearing some problems from use of the spare tire winch so I was wondering if someone has done any mods to this. I am concerned about seeing my spare tire passing me on the highway sometime. Was thinking if anyone's found a solution... it seems kinda flimsy and that ratchet effect doesn't seem like it will hold the tire forever. So my first thought is a small boat winch mounted near an easy access point (wheel well or something) and then have the cable going over to where the original winch was with a pulley. I don't know.... just planning on having this truck for a long time and a boat winch is loads more positive holding locking power. A beer for your t…

not only is there cheapo and high end ball joints available, but there is a choice of 'adjustable' caster/camber +/- 2-4 degrees. How in the heck would I know what I'd need, UNTIL new joints are installed??? There is no way I could get anywhere close to 'true' reading as shot as my current joints are! Is there a common problem on these dana's that an automatic 2 or 4 degree adjustment will correct? Or are these offset joints for the lifted guys... I am assuming they are only adjustable as to the way they are pressed home... after that, you have to drive em out and clock em to t…
