We just put new brakes on our flat deck. Replaced the whole unit at each wheel and now I can barely get the wheels to skid on gravel. (which is a whole lot better than before) I've pulled other trailers that braked a lot harder so I'm wondering what to troubleshoot? How many volts should be coming from the controller? How critical is brake adjustment on these things? To me it looks like there's a lot of room for movement so it doesn't look like it's too critical. I have a Tekonsha Voyager controller.

When traveling the girlfriend and I have different duties upon arrival: she helps spot our toy hauler then she hooks up everything while I deal with unhooking and leveling the rig. Two weeks ago we pulled into a RV park in Walker Ca. each did our thing, got out of the 80*+ heat and were feeling how good life was when kaboom and the whole trailer shock. Upon going out to see what happened the right or door side of the black water tank was resting on the ground. It seems that my lady had mistakenly hooked the fresh water hose to the swisher for the black instead of the fresh water fill just inches above and over filled the black tank. I could have made the same mistake. It …

  3. I'm wanting to construct bins... under the trailer. The frame is I beams... I figure to put shelf on them which comes out to the edge of the body, with drop down doors. I'm not finding anything ready made. My rig is tongue heavy. I figure that to be a good place for items like wheel chocks, planks to level, wrenches & heavy tools (my 30T China jack). I think there's 6-8 feet of length there. I have to see if my welder is available.

  4. I'm planning to get some needed work done on the Toyhauler. There has been leakage in the front compartments & the interior walls in the front compartment seem to have wet through. I found a local business who rolls out a liquid rubber roof... after reseating roof fixtures. Aofter 4th of July, it's going in.At the same time, I'm wanting to replace the faded (& possibly leaking) running lights with new, preferably LED. I have to disassemble one & see what the hole spacing is. I'd like to put low edge turn lights on also. There's a good access point in a trailer plug in the rear for a (now gone) rear platform that had lights... but an easy tap point for …

Hey gang. I'm going be upgrading trailers to improve hauling firewood. I spent a better part of the evening talking with Kelly (Taz) on the phone discussing the idea of a new trailer and what size. I already found a dealer right in Boise, ID that sells BigTex trailers. I originally started out with a car trailer BigTex 60CH. But after talking it over with Kelly last night going over measurements and usage I flipped over to the 70TV. On the way home, trailered the 5th wheel. Had a few CAT scales I was going to pass so decided to stop at one at the LOVES gas station.Got the truck/trailer weighed. Me, wife and dogs with some extra stuff that we packed for the over night drive to pick our trailer up from family's house. Black tank is about 1/2 full. So that weight is incorporated too. Black tank is in front of axles. Was gonna dump, but my sewer solution kit did not come as it should have...So here are the numbers, someone help me make sense?!Truck, trailer together:Steer axle: 4340 lbs.Drive Axle: 6360 lbs.Trailer axles: 10120 lbs.Gross weight: 20820 lbs.JUST trailer on scale:Front jacks: 4580 lbs.Rear …

Here is a picture of the camping spot we had during our memorial weekend bear hunt in the Oregon coast range. As you can see the topography is steep, just not thousands of feet deep. Thats my truck and trailer. Probably not a pic for truck of the month, but maybe camping spot of the month. Also my first pic posting on the forum.

Our camping trip was flooded out. Army kicked us out. (USArmy Corps of Engineers, flood control area. Heavy rains, backs up water behind a dam, protecting downstream cities... upstream is a recreation area... weather & water level permitting.) So we were all packed with nowhere to go... so we went on an adventure. A night visiting with In Laws in NH, drove to Rome (NY) to visit my brother, left trailer there. Used wife's car to see the Erie Canal's historic 5 step locks in Lockport, & watch boats locking through the 2 modern locks. Then on to Niagara Falls... I was exhausted (MS) & let wife hike out to get more views. Overnight in a Hotel. Rainy d…

Just did a 400 mile round trip with my 22' travel trailer. The tires are original cheap 2 ply with 32 psi max inflation. Not happy about taking it offroad as we did to a bear hunting camp location on a landing overlooking a clear cut. Absolutely great spot for privacy and beauty. We could sit in camo chairs and glass for bears, deer and elk. Anyway, my question. Obviously with some 6 ply or greater offroad LT tires I'd get better braking traction and puncture resistence. We were lucky and didn't get a flat. But could I also expect a slight increase in fuel economy with tires inflated to say 55#? Sidewalls on current tires roll quite a bit when turning and puncture inevit…

MAN! So today I got the trailer hooked up and took it out on the road! :ahhh:I can't back it up to save my life. :doh:I did better backing at our destination, but now I done a number on the grass...I planned the route taken to avoid many things, one of them being the bridges... Except when I got about 2/3, 3/4 the through the trip, it started POURING!It was quit the first trailering experience...My trailer is 8'8" wide. The tow mirrors don't get me planed out with the trailer. I can still see behind me, but not straight back...You can definitely tell it IS BACK THERE!I have learned too much in trip already...I estimate 305 horsies with my mods. Making a grade, it started …

  12. Okay so I stopped by a scale here at work and played around with some of the weights with and without the W/D setup. Overall I am happy where it sits. It tows excellent very smooth, stable, and no sway or porpoising. As with anything, I may be overlooking something. So input is appreciated. The weight's are very close to what I normally see on DOT scales. I didn't have the family, and I got out of the truck for all the weights so the FAW is about 300lbs lower than normal. The scale I used today also wasn't dead level approaching and leaving, so I would assume ±100 lbs is accurate. Like I said, very close to normal weight on the trailer and rear axle, just a little light u…

Spent the majority of today installing my superglide auto hitch. Managed to get one from a guy on CL. Its an 18k. Boyo, the parts war eagle sent over to me was some work! Nothing that would be his fault. Definitely makes me wonder about pullrite though. The bolts were too short for the rear brackets. So I had to get new ones.. Biggest pain was taking the overload brakets off. Rusted on! So I could not resist! I had to hook it up to the trailer and see how it was gonna work out for me! Here is the results! ^On uneven ground. It does not sag much. I measured the front a rear wheels for suspension change: Front: - 9 1/4, after hitching…

Who has a shortbed with a superglide?Having trouble figuring out the clearances for things and seein if they will work.Referring from pullrites manual for the #3346 kit, it says that dimension "A" should be centerline of leading trailer edge. What is defined as a leading edge of the trailer? It seems like in figure 1 it means the forward most point of the trailer that could possibly contact the cab. But then in parenthesis it says at the corner. Okay, well my trailer has scalloped corners. If I measure here, the king pin is located in front of the "leading edge".:ahhh:THEN, dimension "B". This works out for me, IF dimension A is good. But if not, that means I have to exte…

So, a priority on the list for the truck has been to add airbags to the rear. Back in my teens I got into the whole mini-truckin thing. It sits in he driveway now, unfinished. Dunno if I will ever have money to finish it to get her going again. But, the kicker is, I have an airbag suspension on it. I figure, instead of everything on it just sitting there, why not put it to use?I've got 2 compressors on it, 4 air bags, a big tank, lines, valves, etc. All needed to make a mini-truck do its thing. So, what do I need to get to put these parts on the dodge? The most I could really think of is the mounting brackets?

I bought my truck about 2 years ago and it has a Jake Brake (the real thing made by Jacobs) with the Cummins name on it. It seems to work correctly though I'm not sure I'm using it correctly. It only engages above 35 mph and when you give it gas at any speed it disengages. My question is when I'm towing my 10k travel trailer, do I leave the pull switch on the gear shifter engaged all the time or do I engage it only when I think i need it? Thanks,Stew

So a guy here locally is selling an Pullrite superglide. He is asking $650 for it with brackets and rail included. It came off his '04 dodge. Here is some pics he sent me: As you can see here, its a 16k hitch. My trailer can rate gross at 16.5k. If I were to get this hitch, would I need to worry about it failing with this hitch? I have a cargo capacity of 3500 or so pounds. I will be full-timing my trailer, but how much does one think they could put in a trailer to make 3500lbs.? I was thinking the hitch would do and would be okay. It sounds like a great price for the hitch as well. Anyone know if the brackets would work for my dodge?

  19. Cajflynn wanted to see pics of my summer time pride and joy, I spend every second I can get on it during our 4 months of great boating weather! Here is a thread with pics of my ride on the pontoon forum I hit on occasion. http://www.pontoonforums.com/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=6664 http://forum.mopar1973man.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=4904&d=1358784884

I just thought, we should have a sticky in this forum for what should be suggested in doing to improve our trucks to tow/haul. Whether that is steering, cooling, performance, safety or braking upgrades. Maybe put upgrade suggestions into categories by weight. Say someone wants to pull 10,000lbs. Well, what should be done to our trucks to safely pull something that heavy?Well, sounded like a good idea...
