I've have a 1999 Cummins with 111k and have owned for almost 8 months and temperatures are starting to go down some here in north Texas and I new to owning a diesel I have down all the main things recommended for the 24v. I drive my truck as a daily driver and gave some fun in it and now with the temps dropping I have heard its normal if truck white smokes little to none in the morning when first started for about 1 min and clears up. Truck to seems to run fine and today when setting at Idle I noticed if I normally give it some gas while sitting parked a little smog of black smoke comes out but today it seemed to be white  but it's only when I give it some gas while sitting there or should I not be worried about it.

Cold start it typical to see some white smoke. Just means the cylinder temp is too low for complete combustion of the fuel.

My questions are...

Do you see this when completely warmed up?

What is your temperature when fully warmed up? Is it above or below the 190*F mark?

 

I haven't seen it till today was the first time and like I mentioned earlier only when I stepped on the gas a little bit but driving down the road it doesn't white smoke at all.

i have changed the thermostat and changed the fluid the thermostat I installed is the napa 190* and the truck ranges typically from 186-192 on the temperature according to my edge gauge

If you're just starting to figure out these vp 44 trucks, I would say main things are good lift pump, gauges, making sure there is no ac current coming from alternator, don't use k&n filter and get a bhaf or stick with factory one, good battery connections and grounds throughout, there are bunch of other things but in my opinion these are more important. Take care of these easy ones and you'll eliminate lots of bugs.

I have done all of them except for the AC current have not heard of that I'm gonna have to defiantly research that thank you 

I got scared the other day too. When I was hauling around my father-in-laws tractor. I wouldn't worry about the smoke unless it happens while the engine is warm.
