Today i went out and popped my hood to check the oil and noticed my drivers side negative battery cable was unhooked like it came loose. I thought i fixed my apps when i reset it but i must have just forgot to put the negative cable back on the battery. So is my rapid studdering a bad APPS? or is it a bad alternator? I do have the p0122 code and it cleared while the cable was unhooked.  I dont wanna replace one and have it be the other. But while the negative cable was unhooked i didnt have any issue with my shuddering. Im kinda stuck until i figure this out.cause i cant drive over 50mph without it shuddering like crazy. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, kimber

Lock and unlock is the alternator. I would pull the alternator have have it tested for AC noise. The P0122 is just a lo volt code for the APPS sensor. Typically this would make for a dead pedal m

  • You can pull the fuse on the alternator and see if that helps. It will just run on battery power then and take the alternator out of the equation.

  • Another thing to check out is all the connections to and from the alternator.  Up there in the rust belt especially.  Check the field wire and the feed wire from the alternator that routes from the al

Just stab in the dark. Have it tested before you leave the store. New is a bit better bit still test before you leave the store. I would avoid chain stores like Autozone, Pep Boys, etc.

I bought one from Mechman and it is running great.  Expensive, but it runs good.

I would also look around and find a local alternator / starter / electric motor shop that will rebuild it for you with all new parts.  Usually they are staffed by a really freakin old Marine or Navy guy and can set you up.

I dont have anything like that around me.  We only have autozone, napa, O'Reillys, advanced auto.  The closest alternatorshop is 150 miles

How about... Elkhart Alternators (44 miles away)

I hate to say it but Google is good at pointing out different things. All I did was look up where your at and then did a search right on Google Maps for alternators and BLAM! The answer was presented. There is my trick...

So do i just got down there and say hey i have a cummins and i bought a brand new alternator and i believe one of the diodes went bad and is causing some ac noise znd interfering with my computer causing an irradic shifting.

It seems like when i used google it gives me stuff as far away as possible.

I would bring the truck and alternator and have it test by him. Explain how the AC noise interferes with the PCM and transmission lockup. It would be a good suggestion to show it to him as well if need be. Then let him do his magic. I'm sure he'll find the problem. Not always will it be diodes. Like my case it was a damaged case, bearing and bad brushes. So then have him re-test after his work and show it to you. Then road test the truck.

Trust me... I understand it very well. Might look over on my side and see my ABS issues. This stems from a bad alternator.

Thats very intersting sometimes my abs light flickers when i put on the brakes.  Donyou think the green machine alternators are better quality than say a bosch or an ac delco?

Well I just seen a report of Mean Green Alternator glowing red hot for a member over on CF. The other problem if you upgrade size wise you have to now rewire the charging system. The existing wiring will not support a oversize alternator nor will the fuse. So now you have to redesign everything to support the new alternator and fuses it properly as well. Which is why I think the one on CF is glowing red hot is because it failed but there is not fuse in the BATT circuit so the alternator is doing weird things.

Well you convinced me lol ill pass on that hell hole.

I drove my truck this morning to work and it didnt do it.  Could i have a bad connection somewhere?

Very unlikely it might come and go.  When it happens again, pull over unplug the alternator amd see what happens.

I noticed as soon as my engine temps got up to 190 it no longer did it.  So im assuming once my transmission temps rise it stops.

Did you try unplugging your alternator?

I hate to say it but %99.99 of the time unlock issues are due to the alternator.

More than likely like Me78569 said it still the alternator it just the batteries are charged and the load is low so now the noise level is low. Why you don't see it now.
