Beginning yesterday my abs and brake light in inst cluster are stuck on. Fuses are good. Is the problem still more than likely the speed sensor on rear axle, even if speedometer was working most of the time until late today when it seems to have quit completely. Any input on this would be greatly appreciated.

Perhaps he has the (KELSEY-HAYES EBC 2) 2 wheel drive ABS system. I believe all wheel drive ABS system was optional in 99 year model of the truck.   Now this is all wheel drive ABS system:

  • Use a paper clip to "jump" the connection/plug on the rear pumpkin then use a multimeter under the hood on those wires to verify that the wiring is good.  If it is then replace the sensor.

  • That's why I always test wires for resistance now if I have an issue like this.  It is VERY easy to miss a busted wire.

Be aware if the ABS module is disabled then the speedometer doesn't work... Then other things like cruise control doesn't work and grid heater don't shut down at 20 MPH anymore. So truly there is no way to disable the ABS computer. I ran for a few weeks without my module and found out what all fails...

Must be different on the 4 wheel abs models. Pulled the fuse on my rear wheel abs and speedo/cruise works fine just dash lights on now.

Yeah it is different. Pull the fuses on the 4 wheel ABS and the ABS light stays on and the BRAKE light goes out. Then the speedometer, cruise control and grid heater shut down doesn't work. The only way to disable 4 wheel ABS is to pull the smaller sensor lead so the module remains in permanent error. The light remain on but the module will not fuction for ABS but all speed function work fine.

How much difference between the auto and manual trans? Does the auto not get the speedo signal from the trans?

All speed signals come from the ABS module.

The speed sensor on the automatic transmission is for shifting control not speedometer/odometer function. Basically the rear speed sensor is your speedometer/odometer in the rear differential.

I don't like ABS brakes. Any proper way to disable them?

I'm sure i can make a device to emulate the abs controller and disable the lights.

My ABS does not work but my cruise and everything elsexworks great. I hate abs so that's not the issue but i don't like the lights. Will just pull the bulbs next time i'm in there i guess.

From looking at my spare speedo I believe @Mopar1973Man is right. Mine has 8 bulbs and only one of the is in the location of the trouble lights and I think it is for the seat belt. The others appear to be for illumination, blinkers, and hazards.

Pretty sure my 98 12valve had a bulb for abs cause it burnt out and I replaced it. Iirc it is smaller(pc74) than standard inst cluster bulb(194) and more expensive!  However, my memory has never been all that reliable. Haha

All of the warning lights are LEDs.  I replaced mine all.
