Do new fan clutches need time to "break in?"

I got a new one Sunday night and it still hasn't unlocked by today so I took it back and got another. The new one hasn't unlocked today either so I'm not sure if I just need to give it some time or go get another.

  • NO   I've never heard of that, should be good to go right out of the box.  It could be the aftermarket brand you're getting, try a different supplier.

It shouldn't spin cold. The oil should be settle to the bottom and thick and it should be extremely stiff. Once started and driving a short distance the oil will spin back to the hub unlocking.

  • Well my fan locked up again before I headed home. 125 miles at full lock... Guess I'll go exchange it.

I've got a good question? If all the dealers are sold out and OEM is no longer manufactured so where is Geno's getting there fan clutches at? Is what Geno's is selling a true OEM fan clutch? Make you think a second...

My local dealer could get OEM no problem. It was $260 plus the ride.

PDP has them

Genos says it's OEM, and it'll be easy to tell since I still have my old one and will be able to compare. Their image is of an OEM clutch.

@Mopar1973Man is the fan clutch actually produced by Cummins? It does have a Mopar part # number stamped on it.

New fan clutch on. It looks exactly like the OEM one, and it works PERFECT.

It took 1/4 mile for it to disengage after putting it on, and locked up half way while hammering on it. I have no doubt it'll fully lock like it's supposed to when things start getting toasty. (I'll verify this when driving home tonight)

Thanks everyone for the comments.
