Ok building a nv4500 and am wondering about the fifth gear nut is there a proven fix for it that dont require welding it? Or is one better of to leave it alone

Fully splined output shaft with a lock nut. If it's a 4x4 there's a splined nut holder that makes it to where the nut can't back off. You can find it here: 4x4 5th gear locker

Might check the specs on the updated torque king (iirc) shaft and nut. That why I think is higher torque value.

Let say most of the 5th gear nut problem is depending on the person driving. Like my first NV4500 lasted 260k miles and I broke the mainshaft at the 3rd/4th shift ring. Never had a 5th gear nut issue ever.

Now after the rebuild I got the fully splined main shaft so I'm good there. The other thing is most people don't know that the 5th gear nut is torqued to roughly 600 foot pounds. So all these YouTube fools out there beating the nut on with a chisel and hammer is an idiot because they never get the nut torqued properly.

I followed a video and used a flat head and a hammer to put mine on, fell back off two days later. I ended up using a pipe wrench to get it snug and then using an impact hammer to get it tight all the way, hasn't come off yet. But now I have a fully built NV4500 in the back of my truck ready to go in, fully splined output shaft and 1 3/8" input shaft. But yeah would not recommend flathead/chisel and hammer combo

I asked my rebuiler about the torque value and thats why you need the tools for torquing the 5th gear nut. I would double check my number but im pretty sure thats what he told me.

Nut torque is 350 ft-lb if I remember correctly. I torqued mine to 460ish

I used a couple big ratchet straps to hold it on a work bench, then had someone sit on the far end of the table. Slid it into 2 gears at once so it wouldn't turn and cranked it down. It wasn't too hard.
