I've always pondered why the AC dryer/accumulator hanging on the firewall is so close to the exhaust.  Logic tells me that this wouldn't be a great design when you're asking the condenser to cool the freon down so it can return into the evaporator...only to have it pass right next to a 800-900* exhaust along its way.  Seems kinda counter productive...

Anyways, I had some extra heat insulation material for protecting things from direct heat and thought, why not wrap it around the dryer/accumulator to better protect it from the hot exhaust.  Is there something I'm missing?  Would this be a problem I'm unaware of?  Would this even help?  I've heard of people wrapping their AC lines with insulation material to help cool the AC, but not the dryer.  Any insight would be helpful.  Thanks. :thumb1:

  • Once the refrigerant is in a gaseous state the only way it can go back to a liquid is be compressed and sent through the condenser.  A properly filled A/C system will not cause slugging.  Over filled

I will admit it is much much easier to install 1/2 inch pipe insulation on the orifice tube before installing to the truck. It a rather PITA to do it on the truck but not impossible though.

@Mopar1970man Why are you insulating the hot part of the pipe from the condenser to the orifice tube?

I thought that you would leave that uncovered to let the heat escape like in the condenser.  You would only need to cover the pipe from the orifice tube, after the pressure drop, to the fire wall/evaporator to keep the cold in.

Where's the orifice in this line?

Near the battery. My problem is the plastic clip failed so the foam protects the line from rub/vibration damage.

That is mainly why I wrapped mine, to keep the air filter from hitting it and it rubbing on anything in that area. I used some foam tape and wrapped that with aluminum tape. Pretty like the oe one was. Really was not thinking about insulation value.

And IBMobile, do I spy a duct tape air filter box?

I missed that one. But that's what it looks like. I don't think that's his truck though

I've seen it... It a custom homemade heatshield out of some rather interesting materials. Covered on top even. The only open side is towards the fender hole.

The reason I ask is the truck is tan but the under hood  looks a different color.

Yes...Yes it is duct tape and it is the finest duck tape money can buy.  Only the best for my truck.  464105092_animated-smileys-character-0921.gif.adeda9fc0cb77ba442d57a99f6aad052.gif

It was a little project I was trying out.  I was making a heat shield for the BHAF out of the heat shielding that goes between a cars catalytic converter and the floor pan.  This stuff works great,  about 6 very thin aluminum layers sandwiched between two thicker sheets.  300°+ on one side and 95° on the other.  The duct tape is to cover any sharp edges, then spry painter black.  I took part of it off and ended with this.

Yes that's my truck.  It's gold over sliver.  Under the hood is a dull gold.  I haven't polished it yet.

Well I would polish mine but it would probably be dull blue like it is now. Anyway that picture looked like a complete intake box made of duct tape. Does  the air get thru OK? I have to assume so or you would not be driving it.

No problem with air flow.  There is a minimum clearance between the filter and shield of 1" and that's only in a few spots.  The rest is 2" to wide open.  The engine can breath like a race horse at Santa Anita.
