Anything negative about adding some a biocide. My 01 has been sitting for over two years now and  I'm in a high humidity area fungus biocide fungal Gunk whatever you want to call it not uncommon in my area he is there any danger of putting the stuff in at all.

First I would see if there are any problems with algae before adding something you don't need. I would run the truck for good 20 to 50 miles and pull the fuel filter and replace. If its a spin-on filter cut the can and examine the filter media. If it the stock drop in then just look at the media for algae. As long as the fuel cap was on the filler neck I really doubt there is an issue. Unless you adding water to the fuel to grow algae.

 

Algae only grows if there is water in the fuel tank.

That is one ugly bottle of fuel.

But take notice of the amount of water it took to grow the algae. 

 

Another reason it best to either fill the tank and store it long term because it hard to stuff water in with a full tank of fuel. Or to completely drain it of fuel completely. Hard to grow the algae without diesel fuel present. If I was concern of a algae problem I would drain and drop the tank and clean it out. I would not use a fuel additive because you'll kill the algae but where is it going to go? Right to the fuel filter. This mean you better just buy a box of filters and keep changing every time the pressure start to drop. Simply be easier to drain and wash the tank out. Then fill with fresh fuel. Problem gone... 

I own a commercial fishing boat.  

I use BoiBor JF, as a biocide.

Most diesel fuel is stored in huge tanks at the refineries.  These tanks have a water bottom.  Usually diesel fuel is treated for Algae before leaving the refinery.  Might be the reason diesels all have water drains on the filter housings?

As I carry 2000 gal of fuel sometimes its sits for quite a while.  I have had 2 or 3 bouts of bad algae contamination over the last 25 years, I shock with Boibor JF and sometimes add a maintenance dose.  It does not plug my filters after it's been treated.

OP here.  I've only have 10 gallons to mess with.  I'm going to pump it out via airdog and put in new fuel.  Then give biocide "shock" treatment should put me in good standing.  But if I had 2000 gallons to deal with I certainly wouldn't be giving it to my neighbor to burn thru his back hoe.

A bit of biocide might not hurt even if you empty the tank as it could be in the lines or filter housing.  

If you have algae.  If it's just old fuel drain and refill and add some conditioner

Thanks...I'll drain tank, then new fuel, change filter (and inspect best I can) give a "shock" treatment.  Then start it up to get new fuel throughout engine.  

 

Really not sure best way to cut open filter, which are air dogs.  Any ideas?
