I have 2005 Cummins 5.9, that has a tune on it, but I don’t have a controller. Can I purchase any tuner to over ride the old tune?

Welcome Laura. What makes you think there is a tune on the truck?

It has the ports for a tuner, and an the transmission shifters hards in all gears (Automatic)

You mean port under the dash near the throttle? Do you know previous owner?

Could you post a picture of these ports?

Could be a few other things.

As far as I know all tuner only affect the engine. They do not have the capacity to alter transmission shifting. Typically tuner will change the amount of throttle required to keep moving. This in turn changes the throttle valve position on the transmission and changes how the transmission shift. At least for the old 98.5 to 02 Dodge's the PCM controls the transmission. Now on the 2005+ truck the ECM and PCM have merged together. Still in all I don't know of any programmer that can affect transmission performance.

The transmission can be tuned, to some extent, on 03-07 5.9’s. How much the box tunes actually do is an unknown.  I know that with UDC Pro I can tune the 48RE. What year depends on what can be done.

I've heard of that but never seen it done as of yet.

Have you tuned with EFI Live, UDC Pro, or HP Tuners?

Not have the pleasure of playing with a full programmable tuner.

I've used EFI Live tuners. But these are preprogrammed. Never found anyone wanting a true programmable tuner up here.

That’s probably why you haven’t seen it done.

Like I just sold a EFI tuner to a local gent here for 2012 Ram 6.7L he's not tech savvy nor does he own a computer. Not many up here want to tune their truck.

Is there any tuning port that is added for any of these tuners? That is what threw me off as to tuning ports with what Laura had mentioned.

Could add a usb with a touch/MM3, but I think that’s about it for an 05.

Otherwise I’m thinking it might be the OBDII port???

I've got an old Smarty I'm willing to part with.  Just sits under the drivers seat.  My transmission used to knock your teeth out when it shifted.  The PO had some sort of Race Tranny fluid in it.  Paid to have it flushed as it was new to me and voila shifts nice and tight but doesn't kick you in the pants with every shift!!

Michael :- )

OOPPPSSS  Sorry just reread this Gen 3 sorry out of my sand box.  The Smarty is for my 2001.  The tranny did shift better after the fluid change.
