Torque Converter Acting Weird

Posted

Over the last couple of weeks I noticed my TC was acting weird.  When its engaged over 45mph and I hit the brakes the TC disengages like its supposed to but then immediately reengages as soon as I let off the brake and its a noticeable reengagement.  It has never done that before.  It would always stay off unless I got back on the gas pedal.  I scanned for codes and it had 2 codes.  One for APPS low voltage and one for charging system low.  So I bought a new Timbo APPS and installed it today.  The TC is still acting the same.  I checked the alternator and it is charging normally.  I did notice that the AC voltage is up though.  When I first did the WT mod the AC noise was at almost nothing but now its at .05 VAC.  I may have to replace the alternator again.  This ones only about 2 years old.  Anything else you can think of that would cause the TC to act like this?

I also have another question.  If I go with a Nations alternator (I want a better quality alternator) will I have to get a different breaker.  I currently have a 150 Amp breaker installed but the Nations Alternator is 180 Amp.  I'm guessing the 150 amp breaker will be good as the truck shouldn't draw over the 136 Amps that the OEM alternator is rated for unless something is wrong or I add something that would draw more power.

Tone ring coming apart on the crank? There has been a member that broke his tone ring when it fell out while running. It can happen.

I hope its not the tone ring coming off.  That dont sound like a fun fix...

I did notice yesterday that it only happens when the engine is cold once it warms up (above 140) it dont happen...  Here we go again.

I will start another topic on this to keep things tidy on the forum.

You have quad and you're saying above 140 it doesn't do it, 140 is where quad takes over control from ecm coincidence

thanks guys.  I will give that a try.  I do have it setup to start a 140 degrees.  I didnt even think of that.

Well, the gremlins are back.  Same issue, when I step on the brake the TC disengages and immediately re-engages even though my foot is on the brake.  The only time that it will disengage and stay off is if I am below 45ish MPH.   The only thing I did was disconnect the grounds while I removed the starter when I did the CKP sensor.  Still seems like there is a bad ground somewhere.  The hunt continues...

Well, after 2 years this issue has returned.  Same issue.  TC locks up and will only unlock if I put my foot on the brake or if under about 42mph.  If over 45ish and I put my foot on the brake it will unlock and as soon as I take my foot off the brake it locks back up harshly.  The only way it will stay unlocked is if I keep my foot on the brake until the speed is below the 42ish mark.  We did just have a bunch of snow a few days before this started happening.  The same thing happened the last time.  Coincidence?   I'm thinking when all that snow melts it allows water to get into the PCM somehow

I will be pulling it into the garage this weekend to go through the grounds again and to fix the PCM ground splices that @IBMobile recommends.  I'll reinstall dielectric grease into the PCM plugs too.  Fingers crossed!
