I've just come across a pair of exhaust brakes, just the actuators no controllers, from pictures and measurements they look to be 3 1/2" ID on a 4 1/2" V band  both straight not angled

 

Both are off of a Daf cf55 which has the 5.9 cummins fitted but the pre 24v, I'm assuming my downpipe is stock but have't measured it yet hope they are the correct size, bigger than stock I'll be ok, smaller than stock and I'll sell them on to the landrover/cummins conversion boys

 

Whats the easiest way to operate one without spending huge amounts ?

ECM is the controller for most. There is a empty pin that is used for the trigger on most kits. Typically most are mounted to the back of the turbo. Your sounds to be a in-line pipe kit. This is not a big thing but your going to need the pipe flanges for said exhaust brake. Like both Thor (BD exhaust brake) and Beast (Jacobs Exhaust brake) are turbo mounted. Now like my buddy down the road from me has a in-line added to his truck (DAP - BD exhaust brake). That kit had two pipe flanges that had to be welded in. Then the exhaust brake clamps to those flanged pipes.

That's what I figured on the flanges, cut the downpipe and weld them in, I think I'll put it on a switch or cable with a good strong return to open spring, it will be a long term project as I haven't got a 2nd gear lockup VB and due to core charges I doubt I'll ever get one , I paid £150 for 2 so cheap enough to play with methinks

Like I said though if they are smaller than my DP then I'll resell

You a line pressure of 90-100psi to hold convertor locked.  You can lock up your torque convertor when exhaust brake comes on using an extra relay to ground the orange/ black wire at PCM B11.   You could modify what I did below to accomplish this.

Out here I use all gears with the exhaust brake. Some mountain rods are steep with speed limits on some roads as low as 15 MPH.

I have a switch to hold LU in taken from your very article, I find for normal driving I don't use it much at all as I find my truck is locked in 3rd at our 30mph limit and will stay locked down to 25 to 28 ish and in 4th it is locked at our 50mph limit or I should say once locked it stays locked to a little below 50mph which is perfect for the roads and limits here, I honestly couldn't have got a better combination of ratios if I'd have tried.

There is not that many steep downhill roads I use normally, there are 2 that come to mind but 2nd locked would be the gear which I can't do at the moment as they are both short and steep.

A exhaust brake would be good for when I get back to using my 5th after this covid, won't bother this year so got some time to play around which is good as I'm fitting a second bathroom ATM and collect a new Volvo XC40 hybrid car next week

Talk to @Dynamic he can tell you how to mod the valve body to get lock up in all gears. 

 

Yeah without seeing what your world is like it not exactly easy to tell what you need. Just using the local knowledge of what I have to drive...

 

 

Yeah I've got a few in the 18 to 19% range too... That are unmarked. 

 

I've got communities that that are steep dirt roads and speed limits of either 25 MPH or 15 MPH depending on the community. With grades reaching the 16 to 18% for sure. Yeah for me I would have to have lock up in all gear on a auto. Again it comes back to what kind of world you live in. Like some one in Midwest US I would say yeah you don't need lockup in all gears 3rd and 4th would be fine. 

unfortunatly dynamic doesn't ship to the UK, already asked a couple of years ago, I could probably get away with LU in 3rd/4th and exhaust brake the same, we'll see

No need to ship. Like he told me one port has to be blocked. I think another drilled out. It's a mod you could do at home without shipping. Again ask him I'm sure he would tell you what needs to be done.
