PS Pump Replacement

Posted

Came outside a few days ago and there was a 1/2 quart of ps fluid on the driveway (truck was idling). Ordered a brand new pump with reservoir from Napa and having a guy install it this week. Did I read something on here one time about a vacuum pump seal having to be replaced along with replacing the PS pump? Also, can’t say I fully I fully understand the hydroboost system, are there any considerations my mechanic should know while he’s doing this job? I’ll be keeping the old pump as a backup and rebuilding with a seal kit, just didn’t have time to fool with it right now so bought a new one. Any tips I can pass along to this old guy would be appreciated. Goal is to get another 300K from this new pump.

Ok, so the pulley would slip over that and interlock with the tangs? Just trying to picture how it goes together is all. For future reference.

No pulley on a diesel, it just bolts up to the back of the vac pump, IIRC there is a drive piece also

Then to step up your article there @IBMobile here is a update to the filter types so you can have a replaceable cartridge now. Designed for power steering.

That's a nice filter set up. Looks like it could be remotely mounted anywhere within reason.

Something like that I would pay for the price of that filter being it can get replaceable cartridges and magnets. If set up right it might be handy for doing system flushes. I've got to think on that a bit.

Plausible

I agree.  I am inclined to believe that surface metal hardness was more of a factor.  I ended up running the power steering pump to 215,000 miles and then replaced it.
