Well... My starter is not hitting all the time anymore and I know the starter contacts are to blame. So I guess its time to make a order to LarryB and get a rebuild kit for the old starter... I'm going to pull the starter out tomorrow morning and pull it apart to inspect everything so while I'm at it I'm going to have the cameras handy and make a write up of it...

why would you/someone only change 1 contact? at least on my 99s, both contacts were the little square ones on the right side. my replacements were the bigger ones on the left. my write up(http://forum.mopar1973man.com/showthread.php/1911-Starter-contact-write-up) shows what i am talking about. my brushes look okay, so i got away with contacts and plunger only. an impact wrench made short work of the contact nuts. i could NOT break them with hand tools.

That's how I got the brush cover off the back of the starter. I had to dig out my #2 phillips and put it on my impact gun to rattle them out. As for the grimmy mess that is from #5 and #6 injectors bleeding on the manifold I found out... :rolleyes:

the phillips came out with a screw driver for me. the nuts(on the outside) that hold the stud(and contact) to the housing are what i had to use the 17mm impact on.

Yah! LarryB's package came... :hyper: I was quite surprised what I found jammed in that small package... yea! no more *click*click* for you!just FYI for anyone who gets stranded/no money/got to drive until package arrives... you can take a drill and make the hole on the contact that is wore out longer. allowing you to move the contact up and actually make contact.don't forget to recycle.

Real simple to change out ain't they?? I put two sets in and it takes a lot longer to install the starter than it does to change the contacts.

Well the problem is the contacts are laying on my desk at the moment... I'm heading out tomorrow so it will be Saturday before they are installed... I happened to have a single contact given to me that I found to replace the burnt one for now... So I'll get it done Sat... As for installing them GuessWho is right about the impact ned to break the nuts loose. Needless to say mine got rounded off a bit... :banghead: But nothing a 6 sided socket and a impact couldn't fix... :woot:

About how many miles do you have.I will have to do this some day.

Mine failed at 177K miles. I think a lot of that has to do with the fact of starting and stopping alot on the mountain doing firewood. So you might move the truck 6-7 times during loading process. I never leave the engine run while sitting on a steep slope. I typical shut it down lock the parking brake and grab 1st gear. As for my grimey brushes I got that cured too... It was #5 injectors leaking on the manifold very little (weeping more like it) but it was enough to make it to the starter and make a mess. :rolleyes:

Contacts on my 2000 started popping the fuse at 80k or so, replaced the starter, and have done so again (since the ex had no idea what I meant when I said, replace contacts only) and now have 108k on it. Wonder why the huge difference in mileage between when my failures happened and the 170k you all got. Electrons are mysterious. :ahhh:

Yes... It actually reduced the miss to hardly there... I had a new connector tube here and stuff it in the hole...

Well in my case the stock contact wore un-even... I know I post earlier the load side was wore... My Bad it was the battery side that was wiped out. The plunger and the load side were fine... So now with my extra contact and the old one I wire brushed then and put them away for spares... :thumbup2:

might try roll starting to save the starter. my mom and dad's driveway is enough to roll mine to life.
