Hey guys, was on the computer last night doing some research on possibly getting some RV275's for some better mpg and ran across a thread that has got me thinking. I bought my truck being told it was stock and I've only done to it what's in my sig. My question is how much smoke does a stock cummins make. I know every truck is different but my truck sends a puff of black smoke out everytime it cranks and smokes through every gear. I'm not blacking out the road by any means but it is noticable. How would I check to see if there is a programmer on my truck without having the programmer. Oh and what does everyone think about the RV275's. I've read they are the best bang for your buck but is it a noticable increase in hp and mpg and maybe they will clean up the smoke.

My truck, stock -mode, doesn't hardly smoke, other than a puff at cold startups, or a light hazing between gears. yours should not smoke through the gears.As for your 'check for a programmer', most-likely it doesn't, if you haven't seen a 'box'. usually check around the driver's side, engine bay area for a black box that doesn't look factory. Also check for splices at the MAP sensor on the left size of the engine, etc.

The only way to see mine is to remove the knee bolster. Mine is not adjustable so there is no neep for to be exposed. You can tell by looking at the wiring at the apps, and map sensor like Rogan says. I also have a stealth cover on the VP with wire attached near the center, the stock cover would not have a wire attached to it. That is if the programmer taps the pump. Some do not.

My truck did not smoke until I installed the RV's. It only smoke in the lower rpm's until the turbo spools.

My cousin has a 2001 and went to plug up a programmer up and it messed something up on the truck because either a programmer was already on the truck or it messed up the programmer. Anyways, my smoke is closer to a haze rather than thick but i do think it might be more than the average. Mine smokes more than my cousin's. I might need to pull my injectors to make sure they are stock before I go buying new ones. Trucks running great though and just looking for some more mpg's. Like I said just had me thinking out loud.

Injectors will help you pick up mpg if your current injectors are worn out (already bad mpg). Some will argue they are a little more efficient ....... kinda hard to prove unless you replace a stock injector with less than 10000miles and see a gain Timing advancement via a programmer will net most mpg ...........at least for me and many others - doesnt have to be crazy - look at a used powerpuck Your smoke sounds about normal - but do a boost leak check RV275 or anything up to ~100HP works well. I have same mpg with +75s as I did with RV275 - but its a little more fun Jacob at DAP has great prices on RV275.

Everything looked normal to me no programmers or boxes. I guess with all the injector and programmer talk im doing I prolly should be saving up for a upgraded clutch.

Also look for added wired running through the firewall in the driver's foot well or by the e-brake. I have my XZT switch through the driver's knee panel, the box is under the edge of the carpet (only other place was the e-brake bracket). My escort install anti radar system is velcroed under the steeling column behind the knee panel.
