How exactly do you know if you have the premium sound or not? Is there a way without pulling the speakers? Im just curious...

Ok. So if there is a tweeter on the pillar I have premium sound. If I have premium sound, I should have a stock amp, right?

You should..However, my 2001 had Premium Sound.. I replaced the head unit and kept the stock speakers without touching the amp section..On the 2Gen trucks, the amp(s) are on the back of the factory stock speakers in the doors. Only the door speakers and tweeters are amplified.

Oh ok. My head unit is replaced too. I never thought about the speakers themselves amplified. I always thought there was just one amp.

I replaced the head unit and all four speakers. Not one of the replacement speakers had an amplifier on them. I got everything from Crutchfield and it sounds as good or better than the stock speakers. My daughter says she can't believe how 'crisp' the sound is from the new speakers.

What brand did you end up going with? I was thinking about getting a full set of kickers. What head unit did you get?
