Man, I tell ya, something is gong awry. I done alot to get my truck into excellent running condition. The truck practically is "brand new". The list is long with what I have done to the truck. The most extreme of things I have not yet done are replacing the vp44, tps, turbo, etc.Over the course of a few monhs, my mileage has dropped significantly. I was averaging about 18-20 mpg right after I replaced my injectors. But now, my mileage has dipped down to as low as 14mpg on avg!I don't understand what this could be stemming from? I have not noticed any drastic change in performance in the truck and have not had a CEL. Granted, I can scan for codes tomorrow and check just to be safe.Its crazy that I have dropped abut 4-6mpg on avg. so drastically. This is a big concern to me as it makes me wonder if my vp44 is finally taking an unannounced poop...The least drastic thing that I can only seem to entertain is cleaning the MAP and IAT sensors. But you would not think that if they were THAT dirty it drop the mileage that much?!ALSO, I will admit that I also have not been gentle on the skinny pedal. BUT, since the drop in mileage, I have driven like a grandma. Despite this change in driving habit, my mpg has not changed. Even highway and city,the mpg only differs by about 1 mpg.

My old Chilton's book troubleshooting for reduced mileage includes increased friction losses. I should have used this myself when I had my front brakes rusted up & dragged the calipers frames. It threw no codes. I actually towed heavy with it & it felt fine but the MPG sorked. Check axle, trans fluids, rear brakes too.

I would look towards drag too. I know my short trip driving is killing mine. I'm driving less than 5 miles not really getting fully warmed up. So my MPG on avg are like 16-18... Also I know the tune I'm playing with doesn't help either. (Edge Comp on 5x3)I'm now been working back on the 96 and using it more again because of the short trips.

brake drag is how i found my passenger rear drum was stuck from frozen water in the e-brake line.. what a PITA that was to free up...id be driving down the road doing 40mph at 10psi... ??????? WOW!!! something is not right..lol:lol::lmao::doh:

Double check the cable. I know its a royal PITA to remove, but if you removed it and coiled it up in a bucket of waste engine oil and let it soak overnight, you might prolong its life and prevent sticking again.

Any way this could be weather related? My truck has historically dropped 2 to 3 mpg in mileage when the weather turned south because of the major changes in timing to maintain emissions. This is the first winter Ive had Mikes mpg fooler mod and so far my mileage has held rock steady at 19 - 20 mpg.:thumbup2:

I use my preheat grids to cold start... as soon as I have oil pressure, I flip the switch on the IAT fooler.

another 'drag' parasite is front end alignment. How long since you've done one... how are the fronts wearing?

Double check the cable. I know its a royal PITA to remove, but if you removed it and coiled it up in a bucket of waste engine oil and let it soak overnight, you might prolong its life and prevent sticking again.

ill just replace both cables and drums/shoes as they need it from leaky seals i replaced this summer. ill soak te old cables and keep as spares. tnx for the idea mike!

I recently have had an alignment done. About 2 months ago. I suppose I need to check any brake drag and fluids. Being that I moved, I somehow cannot locate my log book for my service work, so I have no idea if I'am due for any service work... :banghead:I think I will be converting to Amsoil synthetics as I do it next time too. Hope that will give me some more gains..BTW, last summer, I completely redid all my brakes. Rebuilt the rears, new shoes, drums, cylinders, etc. New seals, pads, and turned rotors on front. Put new brake fluid in at the time too...

One thing about brake drag is it is easy to diagnose since it has to produce heat to be significant. After driving at least ten miles without using brakes too much just pull over and feel each brake rotor and drum for heat. Just touch the wheel rim first to make sure your fingers do not get burned. Usually you can smell the boiling brake fluid if real bad. You can buy an infrared heat gun for about $20 these days which makes it real easy to compare left/right sides.
