Well I've made it home for the summer and it's time to start tearing this thing apart. I will begin tomorrow, but yesterday I took it to the dyno. Laid down 503 / 1215. I was very pleased with the numbers, but the knocking is getting worse to it's time to take it apart.

So I guess today was my lucky day!
Found a clutch for sale which the shop owner said had 4200 miles on it. I think it has considerably less because it doesn't even look broke in. Only missing part was the throw out bearing. The hydros went out and the owner said it didn't engage smooth enough for him so he put a napa clutch in it.
It's a SB DD3250-6, so I'll need to get an input shaft upgrade, piolet bearing (Just to be safe), a throwout bearing and some new bolts.  Best part is.... 480 bucks!

Intermediate plate still has machining marks in it that you can't see from the picture

Ceramic clutches typically are not a smooth engaging clutch.

The DD3250-6 has organic materiel on all 4 surfaces and is reported to be a very smooth clutch, albeit just a little noisy.

The -6 indicates it is for the 6 speeds with the 1 3/8" input shaft.

I did notice that the NV4500 with a 1 3/8" shaft has a part number of -5K instead of -6. I wonder if there is another difference that keeps the -6 from working on a NV4500???

Mike, it's half and half. Ceramic pucks on the intermediate plate side and organic on the other. They actually engage very smooth when they are broke in.

AH64ID maybe you're confusing it with an older clutch?? Here it is: http://www.southbendclutch.com/newsdd3250.pdf

They are quieter with a damped intermediate plate as well.

And the difference in the "code" is one includes a new input shaft assembly. Everything else is the same.

Interesting. When I bought my clutch (OFE) I was told that the SDD was a quad organic face clutch.

We shall see about the dampened intermediate plate as, from what I have seen on several of them (SBC and Valair), the dampers wear out quickly.

I'm not sure when you bought it, but I'm pretty sure it used to be quad organic. My assumption is they were having problems with the organic face burning?? That's why they went to ceramic....

We'll see about the dampers. I'm not too concerned; I doubt you'll be able to hear the clutch over the motor anyway

The half and half is news to me. I remember reading several post about ceramics being rather rough and tough for towing application. But half and half should be interesting to see the results of.

I thought you had an OFE? Or are you talking about 1/2 and 1/2 DD's?

I do have OFE but I've never heard of the half n' half clutch before.

The OFE is 1/2 and 1/2.

OFE stands for Organic and FEramic. Feramic is SBC's version of ceramic on the singe disk.

Valair also has a similar clutch and it too is a bit noisy. I have heard they have something that helps but don't, quote me on that.

All of the Valair I have seen are either all organic, or all ceramic. I haven't heard good things about them either. I've never heard anything bad about south bend, especially their customer service!

They have a 50/50 clutch as well. I didn't know until the other night when I looked up their product line.

I guess I should rephrase... I haven't seen Valair's dual disc with different facings. There's either a ceramic/ceramic or organic/organic. Got a link for something different?

No apology needed! I would just like to keep everyone informed on what is and is not available from each company.

Looking for NV4500? My apologies.

I don't see any DD clutch for any Dpdge application that is two different materials.
