From 24 valve to 12 valve
You don't use it all the time? Or do you use on a schedule...once a month or once every six months? I have been looking at some upgrades on the P7100, simple items but I might be dragging the horse ahead of the cart. I would like it to go a little faster than it is but I don't want to destroy anything in the process. The engine compartment is bad, not so much on grease but paint flaking off every where with normal dirt and grime. Looks like the power steering might have a small leak but it is clean on the drive way where I park it. Got to figure out what the shutter is in reverse and drive. It's faint compared to when it first started. The owner told me this trucks sits for months at a time before he starts it or uses it. Maybe it just needs to be ran a little and I need to check all the fluids. Man, no doubt you have a pulling machine, Tell me how you shift out under a load of a sled?

Teardown and Rebuild
TEASER! Turn the volume up.... That's only 1500rpm too. Can anyone guess what the exhaust is and where it's recorded? Okay, With my limited background on Cummins I would say it is recorded up front on the passenger side with an open exhaust or down pipe only. That's why the Turbo sounds like a fighter jet starting to lift off. Just a guess, the volume was up all the way. It would make a great ring tone. :woot:

Michael on S&R duty
God Bless all of the S&R men and women. It's sad to hear about anyone passing on like this when it could have had a different outcome. God comfort and strengthen his family and friends. Thank you MoparMom for informing us on Micheal's S&R, it's an important part of any community. God Bless our Veterans and Military Men and Women throughout this world, keep them out of harms way.

From 24 valve to 12 valve
This 12 valve has never seen 2 stroke oil mixed in the tank. I need to find out if it's the same ratio as the 24 valve. I have read some good articles from Mopar1973 but I don't know where you draw the line and not use it for a diesel engine. Any body out there use it on a 12 valve since the pump is mechanical?

From 24 valve to 12 valve
Well I am back. My wife and I moved to a new house, no internet since my last post. I am sorry for not being able to respond back. My 24 valve is gone and My Laramie SLT extended cab Ram Dodge 2500 12 valve Automatic stock with a factory Limited Slip and only 230,130 miles showing. It is quite and smooth. Transmission shifts good. Zero to 60 mph takes about 2 minutes, lol. No, it isn't that bad but man it is slow compared to the 24 valve. The only issue I have had is a shudder that started in Reverse with my wife driving and continued in Drive. I had her pull over to look at the tires but no problem so we drove on. It reduced in magnitude the more we drove. I drove it yesterday and there was just a little bit of shudder when backing up. I have a new dash with all new A/C components and blower motor. A/C compressor has been rebuilt I don't think the KDP has been addressed yet. The ride is worlds apart between my prior 24 valve and this one. Same color and trim as the one I had. I need to fix the seats, the rails don't work well at all on either side. It should last a long time, so I need to start reading and learning about 12 valves. A new user name is in order while I am at it.

From 24 valve to 12 valve
I just looked at a FASS system after market lift pump for the 12 valve, I have been looking at anything I can find on the 12 valve. My engine looks like it would cut you with all the lose paint chipping and curling up every where. I have a lot of cleaning to do first. I'm supposed to sit down with the owner this Monday and get the scoop on the transmission and the engine. I know the Cummins Diesels have a good number on torque but you would think it would take more to pull a 40 ft 5th wheel from coast to coast. I'll find out soon enough because down the road i plan on pulling one smaller, somewhere around 32 ft. Is your sled puller a daily driver? My 24 valve get around 19 mpg in town and 24 mpg on the road empty. Any idea on what a stock 12 valve automatic might get? Any books or DVDs on 12 valves that explain it all?

Don't know how I copied the same post twice, sorry.

From 24 valve to 12 valve
very informative bjytech, I am baffled on the amount of pressure the little 12 valve pump puts out. Are you running a special pump to get up to 50 psi? I think I will enjoy the 12 valve once I start learning more about it and what to do. I don't know if the automatics would outrun a 24 valve stock but the one I am getting surprises me on how quickly it moves. It has to have some mods or something done to it considering it's only 180 hp.

From 24 valve to 12 valve
what kind of fuel pressure do you have to be concerned with? it must be low compared to the needed pressure of a 24 valve. So there is no need for an after market lift pump or mechanical lift pump at all. Are there any upgrades at all you can do with the fuel pressure on a 12 valve?

From 24 valve to 12 valve
this is amazing, I am still learning about 24 valve trucks and now I find the truth about 12 valve trucks, I think this will be a winner for me and what I want. What I don't understand is how loud some of the 12 valve trucks are and why are they louder than most. The last job I worked was a Boiler job in Marissa, IL, we would come to work an hour or longer early to get a parking space. I was driving my beloved Duramax. There was an old man who drove an old 12 valve with the new body style. If you were trying to sleep the loudness of his truck caused many ugly conversations, he didn't have to be concerned about anyone parking next to him until 7:45 am. It made your teeth rattle at 25 yards. I am excited about getting this 12 valve.

From 24 valve to 12 valve
Sorry to hear that, it's like all the great men and women that fought in WWII and all the special skills they had. Not taking away from Vietnam veterans at all. I worked with a lot of these men, they were fearless and if you were lucky enough to win their friendship what they shared about life was priceless.

passed on? Sorry to hear that. No pump in between fuel tank and lift pump?

From 24 valve to 12 valve
Does the 12 valve have lift pump issues similar to a 24 valve or does the stock set up seem to work good.?

From 24 valve to 12 valve
I knew I would like the truck as soon as I went down the road in it. I think it was faster than my 24 valve, much smoother too. I have always been fond of Anvils since I started learning the metals trade. I started out Oxygen/Acetylene welding and beating and banging was a big part of it.lol

From 24 valve to 12 valve
I guess I am going back to school to learn 12 valves. One thing for certain according to Michael, there is no hidden secrets about the P-7100 pump so I should be able to understand it better than the VP44.

Tell me this, how does timing advance with a 12 valve or does it stay at one point that satisfies and idle and WOT?

From 24 valve to 12 valve
It's hard to believe the difference in sound between the two. Pretty big job to P-Pump a 24 valve, someday I would like to ask you some questions on how you did it. I am going to buy this one after all. My 24 valve stopped on me before I put 250 miles on it. The transmission is great, I'm going to find out the details tomorrow on how the transmission is built. Thanks for your reply.

From 24 valve to 12 valve
I started reading the posts under 12 valve, lots of information already. I've had time to think about some of what I asked. Thank you your post, Your right, I need to check the front end, shocks, and fuel lines as suggested. I don't know anything about the 12 valves but what I have looked at tells me it is a good engine to work on. If this truck had a new paint job it would look great. I need to look at the fuel system and find out what kind of lift pump is used on the 12 valve. This is a good start...thanks

From 24 valve to 12 valve
I currently own a 99 24 valve 4-door, it is being sold to my younger brother because it is a 5 speed and uncomfortable for me to drive. I had no intention of replacing it now but to wait and look for another 24 valve automatic.A young man who owns a A/C and automotive repair shop did some work for me and I explained what I was doing. He brought in a 97 which automatic, it needs paint but not too bad condition inside or out. 229,000 miles and was used for hauling a 40 ft toy hauler all over the country from coast to coast. The owner owns a transmission shop and at one time was big into racing. This 12 valve is quite compared to my 24 valve. The 12 valve also drives great, transmission shifts hard and deliberately up and down depending on speed. Dash is in great shape and everything works. Asking price is $5,500. Completely stock as far as I know but I could be wrong. What do I need to look for from a buyers prospective, what should I be inspecting or looking over. What are some of the issues with 12 valve trucks that are common. I can't believe how smooth this truck is to drive. What kind of mileage can I expect to see in town and highway. Are there any companies that sell all of the interior items to rebuild it? I'm asking too many questions I know but if anybody has an opinion and feels like adding to this post please do. One is better than none and I could use some advice. Thanks.

Need to remove Valve Body from 47RE trans
What an idiot I am at times, all the hype for nothing. This guys wife drove the 2002 (?) and what was for sale was a 1997 extended cab 12 valve automatic. The owner owns a transmission shop and was heavy into racing. The 12 valve was quite, my 24 valve was twice as loud. It has 239,000 miles on the clock the interior is not bad and it also has an upgraded dash that needs some adjusting and a couple of new switches. It has a limited slip rear end and the transmission shifts hard and fast. I know this is weird but it feels like it shifts about 6 or 7 times but I know nothing about the characteristics of the 47RE or the convertor. Looks like the owner put some muscle in the shifts. He pulls a 40 ft. toy hauler to the west coast every year. I don't understand how quite it is compared to other 12 valves I have been around. I don't know what this truck is worth but I guess I could drive it until I find what I want later.

Need to remove Valve Body from 47RE trans
I really appreciate learning about Goerend and Dynotec transmission information you shared with me. I believe God has a plan and purpose for every persons life. I was directed to a young man who owns and operates and A/C and Mechanical Repair Shop, the primary business is A/C. Fixed my granddaughters car A/C that was sitting at another shop for over 3 weeks, located all the issues and leaks in less than 30 minutes. He fixed my trucks leak that filled up my floor board with water condensation from the A/C drain and installed a new blower motor, big help for me. I told him I was setting my brother up with my truck and buying an automatic. He said are you interested in an 02 quad cab long bed automatic? The body is a little ruff but it just had a new dash and A/C duct work with new factory motors, and so on with a totally rebuilt transmission and A/C compressor that was used to pull a 40 ft toy hauler for $5,500.00. I am leaving now to go look at it.

Need to remove Valve Body from 47RE trans
I would do it the same way...go to DYNOTEC. Do they pull and install your transmission if you bring your truck to them? It sounds like you bought the best combination of everything to work well with your mods. I'm a lot smarter than what I write believe it or not. But when I am out of my league I don't mind sounding like I'm not hitting on all cylinders, I get to take more in and compare it to what I know. My hard headed days are behind me and I am will to learn from anyone that will teach me. Michael and a few others have passed on some great tips and explanations to help me understand the limitations and extreme you can do with a 2nd generation Dodge Cummins. What you shared with me is great, I figured the Automatics would be the weakest point besides the VP44 issues. Won't be long before Mopar1973Man finds all the ins and outs of the VP which will make things better for all who deal with the issues. I can always call Ken or find a Gorend dealer that installs when I find a truck I want. Thanks again.

From what you are saying they know their business and stand behind their business. Of all the luck you ended up with a truck that had this issue. You might have just told a few other members with the same problem what to do to solve it. Great job, great post.
