  1. My son had his carrier replaced, the mechanic used a die grinder to cut it off, took him only about 5 minutes.

  4. Unless you know the dealership service department, you might want to find an independent shop with diesel experience. It maybe easier on your pocket book, and some shops will just charge the hours spent doing the work, not the flat rate hours. If it's in KM's, are you in Canada by chance? Regarding the choice of truck to keep: Given you have a growing family, a regular cab is not going to cut it for sure. Not like the 60/70's when my dad put us in the back (he had a cap on the box) and that was where we sat for 3 hours to the cottage. Cheers

  8. Axle lock works, but i think MnTom may have solved my non problem then. I always thought these had Trac Lock, kind of sucks it isn't. Thanks for the speedy reply and possibly saving me frostbite trying to diagnose this!

My son has my 98 2500 4x4 now and the other day he needed 4 wheel drive to get up his hill, and i noticed both rear wheels and the passenger front were spinning, but the drivers side front was not. I always thought all wheels spun on these in 4x4 mode? Any suggestions to what may be happening? Thanks Rick
  10. Cheap solenoids are on ebay, http://www.ebay.com/itm/94-98-5-9L-DODGE-DIESEL-CUMMINS-FUEL-SHUT-OFF-Solenoid-/200489281467 KDP and fuel lines/tubes rotting are another thing to watch for. Given it's age be prepared to learn how it all ticks, unless you have deep pockets.
  11. How new is your clutch? When mine was getting to the end of it's life, I would need to be rolling to put it into 1st or reverse as the clutch was not fully releasing. If engine was off it shifted no problems while sitting.My 83 Mustang 5 litre needs to go into 5th before I try reverse, has been that way for a decade or more.
  12. Thanks all for your suggestions, hope to get a crack at it again in the next couple of weeks, going to try the simple stuff first (vent clean etc.) as cranking down the pinion nut with the torque multiplier was a PITB.
  13. No I haven't, how can it be checked? I did have the vent hose clip crack and the hose was dragging the ground. Just tie wrapped it up into the frame, but that was a year or more ago long before this happened.
  14. Changed the Pinion seal on my son's 98, lasted about a month but started leaking again. Had a recommendation of putting in a Speedy sleeve, but have never used one. How easy is it to do, or should I just bite the bullet and buy a new pinion?
  15. Manually shifting seems to over ride the Automatic shifts points, which seems normal. Glad my experience has only been with the manual. Got to give you Kudos for persevering and educating the rest of us here!EDIT: Must be some kind of record, almost 8000 views on your post !!
  16. Ebay has a few http://www.ebay.com/bhp/nv4500-rebuild-kit my son did his, but having the bearing pullers etc. make it a lot simpler. He had to improvise which was a bit of a PITA. Took about a day if I remember correctly.

  19. Reminds me of a teacher in high school telling us if we ever arc weld on a car frame, or part, to ground next to it. Some guys put the ground on the motor or frame and the current goes through whatever path of least resistance, causing pitting on the bearing surfaces if it flows through this.

  21. I'm working in Eastern Canada (New Brunswick) this week, right by the Maine border. It is cold every where, US and Canada. We have just become use to the milder temps over the past few years. Making us soft!
