  1. I have a buddy in Bend, Or. that restored an old airstream trailer, put all LED lighting in it. He also put a 12V LED TV in it. They want to do alot of dry camping so he wanted to test what kind of time he could get out of the batteries before having to find shorepower or potentially if he wanted to get a small generator to keep with him.. So him and his wife decide they will basically live in the trailer on the side of the house unplugged and figure out battery life. He decided after 2 weeks and no charge, that he still literally had 12 volts in the batteries. So his focused changed to how could he get more than 2 weeks at a time away from work instead of how long can we live in the trailer without a charge. I believe he told me he had radiant propane heat for that trailer, though I think if it were me even though more expensive I might try to find a diesel furnace that I could somehow run off of an auxilary tank in the back of the truck, or a small tank that I could refill with an auxilary tank in the back of the truck. I have even seen airstream restorations with small wood burning stoves in them. I have always told myself that if I were to build my own cabin in the woods or if I moved to a place like MoparMan that I would run the house like an RV/boat, and as much as I could, I would live in the 12V world, and LED makes that world that much better.
  2. driving in California with high speed stop and go, I would like better emergency braking not just looking at overall braking for normal driving. I think bigger rotors, bigger pads should generate more power and less heat. I agree with you for towing and or "normal" driving exhaust brake is good way to go. Ultimately would like both long term.
  3. I have read plenty about the 3rd gen brake conversion, will the "dually" aspect of this change the rules any?
  4. Where is BFE? Anywhere near Inland Empire California? You make this sound so simple :-) I did a bushing kit in my '97 Ford and almost drove the truck down a boat launch before I wanted to spend another minute in that armpit of the door trying to work on the hinge HAHA
  5. dollars and sense always seem to get in my way with this truck... Its worth in the open market lets say $5-7k (350k miles and tired synchros in the nv5600 scares people :-) ) and I am looking at $500 in door hinges or 10% of the value of the truck.. I always have to rely on my justifiers to get these things done. If I want the door hinges to match the red paint, I can probably double the cost... This truck is lucky I really like it HAHAHA
  6. So it looks like OEM is likely double the money of LMC.. The big question is the quality difference double?
  7. Just through a dealer? or is there a good online source for OEM parts that I won't feel like I need a shower after doing business with them?
  8. AM I reading this right? $39.95 ea? so $160.00 for four hinges? L & R uppers and a pair of lowers which don't seem L/R specific. I guess another $40 in hardware kits.
  9. Both sides are bad. Where is the best place to buy replacements?
  10. Nope, not even close, GOVERNMENT IS THE PROBLEM, but people not making a stand is only fueling that fire. It’s $15000 so they can ALL get paid... RIDICULOUS
  11. We have to get the citizens of the country to move closer to the center. We are allowing the parties and media to keep us separated on a very small percentage of differences. GUN CONTROL = big issue but I bet most of us agree it should be harder for people with issues to get guns. we probably even mostly agree we don’t need OVER THE TOP fire power. we probably agree that households with children minors, mentally ill, or unstable people should keep guns Locked up. probably agree that a gun show shouldn’t be a free for all I could go on and on, but I think we as people on both sides of the aisle get too hung up on the small percentage of issues and don’t look hard enough at all of the things we agree on. i try not to pay too much attention and live my life, but I have kids which raises concern. we all have friends that don’t agree with us politically, yet we are still friends? Think about it for a minute. thankful we all agree on the best Diesel engine here. I happen to wish my Cummins was in a better truck but I don’t want to start that political conversation ????? i like that that we can speak openly here. Thank you for reading my rant hahahhahaha
  12. Politicians and media teamed up are on a course toward civil unrest. I kinda like Howard Schulz because neither party does ???? Tired of voting for the lesser of two evils?
  13. he is a good guy.. just the oddest reason to choose a team that I have ever heard.
  14. California is not bad, weather is good, people are good, its very nice here. Its just not as green as the leadership here would like to portray it is. Work moved me here and while this is probably not my final destination in life, I am going to enjoy it while I am here. Everywhere has its pros and cons. Can't label California as a whole, my next door neighbor rooted for the Patriots because Tom Brady supports Trump...
  15. It never changed from that, my buddies in Buckley never had to smog anything. From what I was told (which could be wrong) is that there will be no more emission testing in the state.
  16. I just moved from Washington and while they are hypocrites as well, read below. I moved a little too soon... :-) "After 38 years, Washington's emission check program will end Jan. 1, 2020. After this time, vehicle owners will no longer be required to have their vehicle's emissions tested before renewing their registration. Vehicles scheduled for testing in 2019 still need an emission test before they can renew their tabs." https://ecology.wa.gov/Air-Climate/Air-quality/Vehicle-emissions/Emissions-check-ends I haven't shoveled rain, but the rain here has created work for me shoveling dirt that has run down the hill in my yard.
  17. I had a US Gears overdrive in my OBS Powerstroke truck.. not sure about Gear Vendors, but it was just something more to take care of and deal with when it wanted to be a pain. I will let the board know if I hear back from him on the trans.
  18. this place cracks me up... STIFFEST vehicle smog laws in the country, DROUGHT DROUGHT DROUGHT, yet EVERYONE has sprinkler systems in their yards with green grass (keep in mind I am in the desert, not near the coast)... so we water the grass with water we don't have so THOUSANDS of Landscapers can run around with SMOG EXEMPT lawnmowers mowing all day......... pretty sure this is the definition of HYPOCRITES... All while the state government pretends California is ahead of the GREEN movement....
  19. pretty sure I was in 18"+ of water this morning in Southern California..... I thought it didn't rain here....
  20. https://inlandempire.craigslist.org/cto/d/aguanga-2001-dodge-ram-2500-diesel/6818656165.html allison tranny?? I sent him a message, will see if I hear back..
  21. I guess if there is something good about diesel truck ownership in California this is it. Maybe I should get a 6.2 to take full advantage of this situation :-)
  22. That crew cab looks scary.. bed doesn't even seem to sit anywhere close. THere is a 2001 local to me quad cab short bed 2wd I am just not sure on the 2wd yet.. but its really just mental as I have never put the dually in 4x4 in the 3+ years I have owned it. I will just keep on plugging away at the little projects on my current truck, as I agree always cheaper to keep.
  23. I am not opposed to keeping my truck. If I keep it it will get the repairs taken care of, and likely 3rd gen brakes and 4th gen steering. Just trying to figure out if a different direction might not make more sense. All used trucks will need something all the time. https://sfbay.craigslist.org/nby/cto/d/monte-rio-1997-dodge-ramx4-crewcab/6800515273.html hoowah
  24. I am not opposed to this, just far and few between for a nice one here.
  25. I am at a crossroads, just moved to California and it is time to deal with Smog and licensing the '01.... truck has 350k miles on it, trans synchros are tired in 3rd and 4th, door hinges are shot, leaks oil (either tappet cover or the vacuum pump).. bed is in rough shape, little rust in the lower door skins... So thinking, if I was going to make a change, now would be a good time. So if I did make a change my wife would like me to get a non dually (we don't tow anything too large anymore so that is no issue) maybe a short bed would fit in the garage. Maybe a 3rd gen would have 4 real doors... oops did I say 3rd gen???? So dilemna that could use some wisdom..... are there big advantages to a 3rd gen over a 2nd gen? I think '05 they started to make some real power.... I may not, now that I am in Cali, even really worry about 4x4 (my wife has a very capable AWD SUV) Ok, so 2nd gen vs 3rd gen.... obviously we all love 2nd gens here. (ever try to find a clean used one that isn't priced out of this world?). But I rely on regularly and trust this group to shed wisdom from both sides of the aisle (unlike our current landscape of professional politicians :-) ) I look forward to hearing good and bad about both. Thank you in advance! **EDIT** I almost forgot... 1997 and older is smog exempt in California, so feel free to include this in the discussion.. Brian
