Laggy, smokey, horrible fuel mileage.

I know.

On the other hand .... I've seen things with these trucks you wouldn't believe in terms of engines holding up.  Over 2000 egt for sustained runs ......
Unless he towed a 10% grade a WOT ....... seriously doubt he stuffed his engine with a superchips and 7x.010 ........

Not disagreeing - just taking the other side on not having him jump a cliff :)

That's a heavily modified racing engine. Stock engine would never hold up to that.

Like said before get gauges. Protect your investment. If you want to verify your engine health just do a compression check and do a pop testing of the injectors while their out.

I know a guy that ran 1800* sustained for a couple minutes....  Says EGT's are actually ***'s (Turbo Intake Temps) and don't correlate well with Actual cylinder temps.  For instance, we all know raising your timing lowers EGT's.  Well, it raises cylinder temps.  I'm not saying everyone can go out and run 1800* all day long, but EGT's aren't a magic number.

Looks like you are hearing all the bad that can happen, but start simple. Pressure test the intake for leaks. Clean air filter. While you are in there with compressed air shoot 20 psi or so in the waste gate  and  be sure it is not stuck open. If you have no luck with that then move on the more compicated things
