Here in Idaho there is no difference between red dye and on-road diesel fuel. The difference is the TAX.

So taking the risk using red dye and tax evasion and the fines that come with illegally using red dye fuel are up to you.

Personally I won't use red dye like what I see here locally stored in rancher drag tanks. Typically quite dirty and end up doing more harm to the fuel system. One of the local ranchers I changed his filter and the bottom of the stock filter can was nearly 1/2 inch deep in dirt in the bottom.

Another member I know of had access to the red dye tanks on a construction site and ended up ruining a VP44 from all the dirty fuel he was getting. So your source of fuel is very important and it should be filtered from the dispensing pump. Lot of the drag tanks that I've seen are not filtered.

Around here, they add the die after shipping it to the distributor.  I get mine straight from the distributor and have had zero issues with dirty fuel in all the rigs that get it (all off-road rigs).

I had a IRS agent show up on a job in Kissimmee FL and he checked every on road diesel tank on the job. he told me it was a $1k fine for having in the tank and a $1k fine for refusing to let him check.

Last I heard for Idaho it's $1,000 per gallon of red dye in the tank.

This happened to me about 9 years ago. Would not surprise me to be a good bit different than then.

Tax evasion charges for running dyed fuel on road in a licensed vehicle. as far as the fuel itself no difference other than the color.

There is a lot of here say of red dye being low sulphur fuel or better lubricity. Sorry to say all diesel fuel from 2007 on is ULSD (Ultra Low Sulphur Diesel) 15ppm. This includes even red dye offroad diesel. There is even today people make claim of LSD (Low Sulphur Diesel) still being sold at the pumps because the sticker is still there stating such. Since a nation wide change over to ULSD I seriously doubt there is any LSD left to be sold legally.

Actually the shipping industry still runs normal old high sulfer #2 as a lot of countries do not have the same fuel standards as the western countries mandate. If one ever sees those huge cargo ships coming through a narrow shipping lane they smoke more than a 10K acre forest fire. I saw a couple of them a couple years ago going through the straight of juan De fuco in WA state, could not believe the trail of smoke they left.

Possibly. I've heard that mostly its they check for a special oil tracer. Because using ATF is red too. Yes, there is lot of people still using ATF in there fuel. To be safe I would ask a DOT officer.

what do you mean NO. Yes they will. end of story. i know the laws. my  BIL is a DPS Sargent. his dad is ADOT. they will NOT search my vehicle without a warrant. end of discussion.

From the visit I had from the IRS agent in Florida you can refuse and then they cite for refusal. According to him the fine was the same for refusing or running the off road fuel. This was 10 or 11 years ago so I am sure there have been some changes since then.

Let them Fine you,. the burden of Proof falls on them.  again people are scared of the feds and shouldn't be. stand up for your rights people.

Well I could have refused and fought them and spent god knows how much time fighting it or just let him stick the tank and gone on about my business. Not so much scared of them as I was wanting to be shod of them. A battle I did not think was worthy of a fight.
