VP-44 Failure?

Interesting.  We have the same year trucks with the six speed transmission.  Just curious, did your VP44 have the timing piston failure, too?  Did Dodge warranty your pump and do the in-tank lift pump conversion

Mine got to where it would only go to certain rpm and no higher and belch blue smoke sometimes and others run just fine. The dealer replaced it under warranty but not the lift pump. I got to do that on my dime 75k later. Actually that was my last trip to the dealer after I found out it was a $900 POS. This was the beginning of my education as to what makes a Cummins run.

Mike lost his oe also on his 5 speed around the same mileage as a few others here have. I just never paid attention to what transmissions they had. Then again here latey I have seen 2 or 3 folks that 2 to 300k+ out of their OE ones.

I hate to say it but back then I did not know about DTC's. My 96 3/4 ton had a V10 and only gave me one problem the 2.5 years I had it. Dropped a valve thru the #10 piston. I did not need a DTC for that. So my education continues.

1st - 50k miles

2nd - 243k miles later.

3rd - still going.

Both mine failed with P0216 codes. But different failure. First one was a true lift pump and timing piston failure that stuck in retard. The second was timing piston failure this time was reversed. This time it was stuck in full advanced and knocking quite loud.

By the time you pay the $4k for the pump conversion and install it. I'll have enough money to purchase a MILLION miles worth of VP44's and meet you at the other side. But even p-pumps don't last forever either and do wear out as well.

Could be worse just by 2003 or newer truck and have to replace $4k worth of injectors every 100k to 150k miles. VP44 pales by far to the cost of CR injectors. :spend:

Yep, your right I can still get a set of new Bosch  RV275's for $360
