Multi-Codes from key switch, very sluggish drive???

Recommended Posts

Hi, just purchased a 2002 Ram 2500 Quadcab 2WD 5.9L 24v.  Starts very easy, Idles perfect.  Drove fine around town in New Orleans, on the road home on interstate, the issues started.  Got to 60 mph easy, but getting to 70-75 was a struggle, and slow climb.  Any acceleration above that was nil and unresponsive.  IF you floor it, no response but blue/white smoke out back.  Consistent slight blue smoke, per wife following in my 94 ram.  Once I got it home, driving around town, good peppy response 0 to 30 mph, after 30 I notice the sluggish, occasional surge, but usually lugging drive with similarity to a miss in a gas engine.  Got on interstate, could'nt get above 55, missing.  Previous owner claimed he had lift pump changed 3 months ago.     The Ignition switch codes came back exactly as P PCU = P 0460; P 1693 then P doNE; P ECM = P 1693, P0216 then P doNE.  P 0460 Fuel Tank Sensor????  Gauge works fine, just filled it.  P 0216 = Injection Timing Control Circuit malfunction:?  P 1693 on both modules?? Each module pointing fingers at each other???  P 1693 = Turbo Charge Circuit control malfunction???  Guys, I am totally confused.  I've been told a plethora of issues.  Crank control module, ARRS, TPS, VP44; and loads of other stuff like fuel leak (None seen), pressure leak., etc.  I would appreciate anyone's input that can help steer to the right problem to solve.

Most likely needs a VP44 and a 6 pack of injectors to start with. If it's got the Carter on block lift pump or the in tank module for a lift pump I suggest an upgrade to something like an Airdog or Fass. A fuel pressure gauge is a must also.

I would clear codes to see what fault codes return and install a fuel pressure gauge before throwing expensive parts at it.

First off lets get the real information on the codes.

Now read over those quick that will help. Then as for P0216 codes typically I'm finding out that if you have good fuel pressure of 14 to 20 PSI them the timing piston typically fails on the lack of lubricity and binds up in the cylinder. Nothing can fix this issue other than full replacement of the VP44.

This is where the 2 cycle oil theory comes into play.
