No WTS light and 3 cylinder idle only

Recommended Posts

Hey guys. First time poster. Long time reader. I've got an interesting problem that has just popped up. My wait to start light is no longer coming on and at the same time, my high idle fooler no longer can be controlled, it just keeps the truck in 3 cylinder high idle when it sits and idles for any period of time. I can still see the grid heater cycling, dropping my volts and dimming my headlights. Am I correct in guessing this has something to do with my IAT sensor? I've dealt with all kinds of stuff on this truck, but nothing like this as of yet. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The WTS light is controlled by the ECM. I am surprised the truck starts at all.

The ECM is 1 year old. I took it to dodge to get programmed, and after they programmed it, I had a 3-5 second delay on the light. They told me they flashed it 3 separate times and that it was fine. I've already read this means a failing ECM. But it's done it since new.

Time for error codes... What error codes do you have? Also good time to get out a live data tool and see with the IAT and ECT values are.

I'll go and check error codes right now and get back to you. Thanks for the reply!

Codes are P0602 P1693 P1694.  These have been there since installing the new ECM. Dealer said the ECM and PCM were having trouble communicating on turn key, but should be fine. Truck runs exact same as it always has. Only difference is no grid heater on start, and 3 cylinder idle turned on always. Dont mind the high idle so much now as its -35 C lots of mornings,  it without the grid heater she really doesnt want to fire all cylinders on start up.

You purchased a new ECM a year ago or just new programing for an old one?

New from Cummins. No warranty on their work of course. There is no one else in the region who could program the ecm unfortunately. My hands were kind of tied. So I hooked up my smarty s03 to check the codes. I decided to switch up the program I had loaded. And voila, I've got a grid heater again, and the high idle fooler is back to functioning properly. Not sure how long the ECM will last. I'll just have to deal with it as it comes I guess. I appreciate the input! I'll try my best to contribute to this community. Thanks again.

Is your WTS working again?

After the 4 second delay yes. Back to how it was functioning after the new ECM was installed. Sounds like I'll be sending out my ECM for repairs when my truck has some down time. I appreciate the help.
