Fuel Pump Wiring Diagram 2001 Cummins

Hi,

I'm new to this forum and I'm in search of a Wiring Diagram for a 2001 Dodge Cummings Ram.

My current issue is that there is no power to both fuel pumps and the relay keeps clicking on and off.

I can't find the power source, and I haven't found a bad fuse.

The relay you here clicking is the one for the VP. If your fuel pump is stock there is no relay for it. The pig tail that connects to the fuel comes directly from the ECM. I have an aftermarket AD pump that came with a relay harness that the OE pigtail connects to. It acts as the trigger for the new relay. I am pretty sure the ECM does the same for the VP relay. As far as I know they are two different functions of the ECM. Only it is better to get the lift pump on a relay and the power from battery to keep the load off of the ECM.

I have another question.

So it originally started with not having enough fuel pressure. I was only getting 4 lbs of pressure out of the tank, and the pick up pump wasn't putting out any more pressure.  So I've changed the pickup pump to a force pump. Then the truck had ran for a little bit, but the throttle positioning pedal went into safe mode. So now the truck will not run at all. So then I changed out the tank pump and it still will not start.  So now I'm not getting power to any of the plugs.

Not sure what you mean by pick up or force pump. The oe lift pump is on the side of the block. When mine went Dodge gave me the in tank pump, their aftermarket. It sucks worse than the oe. Thats when my dead pedal issues started. I finally went to a shop and the only thing they could find wrong was low pressure, 5 at idle and pretty much 0 at WOT. I added a booster pump on the frame rail and the dead peda issue went away. 

 What are you running for a lift pump? And what fuel pressures are you seeing at idle and WOT? Have you checked for any DTC's? A failed VP will cause the engine not to run also.

The pick up pump brand name is "Force". Which is located on the side of the block, where the "Carter" pump was. The Carter pump came stock on the engine block. Which is the fuel pump.

I have a pump in the tank that gives low pressure, then the pick up pump on the side of the block gives the high pressure.  When I started having the problem I only got a reading of low pressure.  When you bump the key the block pump should boost to 20 lbs, but now I have no power to the tank pump and no power to the pick up pump. 

For the codes I've gotten 1694.  The injector pump has less than 1000 Miles on it. 

After changing both fuel pumps (tank and pick up) I had 22 lbs of pressure.  Then I lost everything after about 5 Minutes of running. Since then It's been a few weeks and I've been tracing and testing wires, to try to find the source of the problem.  The engine hasn't ran or started since then.

You would be better off with a single pump like an Air Dog or Fass system or even a mechanical pump than the 2. One might have failed and is not letting fuel by. I dont know anything about a Force fuel pump other than Googling it and seeing the appear to be for marine applications? How do you have them wired? I did have double set up myself with an intank pump run of of the oe pigtail from the ECM and the other wired to an oil pressure switch. 

 

Here is the code. Have you checked them lately?  

 

 I re read your second post. FYI 2 pumps is not OE. The high pressure pump is the VP and there is only one lift pump from the factory that provides fuel to the VP. The wiring diagrams I posted will reflect that and not 2 pumps. 

Also low fuel pressure can  kill even a new VP.

The P1694 is a communication error with the ECM which is not responding. 

 

I also agree you need to ditch those pumps and get to a full FASS or AirDog fuel system. Anything that uses the stock lines will never keep up with volume while under load. Fuel pressure needs to stay between 14 to 20 PSI.

 I had made a mistake with the FORCE system I actually have the FASS pump system.

Is there a fuse link in the wiring to the ECM?  Where would the communication issue originate from, and how do you troubleshoot it?

No fuse or relay in the stock ECM fuel pump control. The FASS should have its own fuse and relay setup.

Is the fass mounted on the block in place of the oe pump? If so it most likely is not wired to relay. I think the DDRP from FASS connects to the OE pigtail for the OE pump.

For us to help you we need to know how the pump is connected. If you will find the the power connection for the pump and follow it, it will either go to a relay most likely on the firewall or straight to the wiring harness. To the wiring harnes is OE, to relay is after market and your relay could be bad or just a blown fuse. If the connection goes to the oe wiring harness it could be an ECM problem. Does your WTS light come on at key on?

 There are different things to check depending on what is on the truck.

I do remember in your first post mentioning a relay clicking. That could run the Fass.

Trying to find the pigtail for the pickup pump, I've got one at the shop.
