Turbo/Injector Advice

Recommended Posts

I’m getting set to add some HP to my ‘01-2500 (vehicle details in my ‘Garage’), and I would greatly appreciate some suggestions about what might best fit my application in the way of injectors and a turbo.

I use the truck for towing and hauling, and as a daily driver.  I frequently am around 13,000 GVW when hauling, and sometimes close to 25,000 GCW when towing.

I am not going to be pulling sleds or putting the truck on a track, and I’m not interested in high-RPM pulls.  I very rarely hit 3000 RPM, and generally keep it below 2500.   I am interested in a setup that spools quickly, has good mid range boost and power, has a decent top range, doesn’t smoke, and keeps EGT’s down.  I recently put LT295/70 R17 wheels/tires on the truck, and with the 3.55 RAR that it has the truck is extremely long legged.   When towing or hauling now I find I usually need to remain in 5th gear, and only use 6th on the flat with a tailwind.  Or running downhill.   (Anyone have an old US Gear 2-speed auxiliary transmission laying about that they no longer want?)

What would you recommend in the way of a turbo and injectors for my application?   I’m not wanting to step up to a compound turbo setup at present although that might be the ideal solution.  Maybe down the road.   I’ve pretty much decided to go with ARP 425 head studs and a Valair dual disk ‘quiet’ organic clutch, but I’m open to suggestions on those as well if you think something else is better/more appropriate.  625 head studs are outside my budget though.

I’m a bit behind the 8-ball, but  I would like to figure out some solutions so I can get some or all of the necessary items ordered during the Black Friday sales currently underway.

Thanks for the advice!

Haven’t figured out yet how to edit my signature, so here’s the details of my truck...

2001 Dodge Ram 2500 QCLB 4x4 NV5600, Camper Special, Class V Hitch, BD Steering Brace, Loadmaster F&R Anti-Sway Bars, Airlift 5000 Air Suspension, (Purchased but not yet installed: AEM Brute Force Intake with BHAF, Smarty S-03, MBRP 4”, Pacbrake Inline EB, Viair Dual 425C OBA Compressors w/8 Gallon Receiver Tank, Autometer Spek Pro Boost, EGT, Fuel Pressure, Transmission Temp Gauges w/Triple Gauge A-Pillar Pod, FASS Titanium Signature 165, Single Steering Column Gauge Pod). Need to purchase: Injectors (75-100?), Turbo, Head Studs, Dual Disc Clutch.

Did everyone take the Thanksgiving weekend off?   I know I’m asking questions that are frequently asked , and I apologize for that.   I have read many threads of a similar nature on this, as well as other forums, but it seems like many of the threads I’ve found have been somewhat aged and possibly no longer relevant due to advances in technology and equipment.

Much of what I’ve found has also seemed conflicting.   For example, I’ve been advised by vendors that 50hp injectors would be sufficient, along with a turbo (ATS 3000 or Fleece Cheetah), intake, 4" exhaust, and tuner to hit my goal of 450hp +/-.   That doesn’t seem possible given my forum research on this forum and others (cumminsforum, among others), and many recommend 100-150hp injectors to reach this hp range.   Some sources have said the Hx35 is sufficient for these higher hp injectors, while others say EGT’s will be a concern with the stock turbo.

Based on what I’ve read thus far, I've been looking at DAP’s Screaming Eagle GX-E 57/65/12 T3 paired with anywhere from 75-125hp DAP injectors to go with the exhaust, intake, and tuner I already have.    Any opinions on this turbo/injector setup, or on one that might be better for my application/use/hp goal?

Your first post is dated Wednesday, but I never saw this post.  Your post today showed up right away.  Maybe others are having the same issue.

I am sure you will be getting responses soon.  This is a good site for your kind of questions - it is a good source for 24 valve second generation trucks in general.

My truck is an '02 with the NV5600 and a stock clutch.  I have the RV275 hp injectors and a Smarty S03.  I don't tow as heavy as you, but the truck runs well and has been reliable.  EGT's are always below 1200 degrees.  Most of my driving is between 1500 - 2200 rpm.  On a rare occasion I have been up to 2500 rpm.

Thanks John.  That would explain the lack of responses.   I knew it wasn’t because of a lack of members as I’ve lurked long enough to know there are many active participants.   😄

It sounds like our driving styles are quite similar.  Any thoughts on the turbo and injectors I’m looking at?   I’m wanting to only have to make the one turbo/injector purchase and I’d like to get a balanced setup right out of the gate.  A lot of the driving I do is in the mountains of the Pacific NW, and EGT’s are my biggest concern.

I would give the guys at @dieselautopower a call.  When I went to put in new injectors I called them first and told them what I was planning to do with the truck and what my expectations were and they set me up a set of 150HP VCO injectors.  Paired with my HX35 and Quadzilla they work great and I can always upgrade my turbo later if I want.

Thanks Ray.  Going to give them a call tomorrow.   I have an email in to them as well, but I think they’ve been closed for the holiday.

We have L-19 ARP studs for $750 and they hold within about 4% of the aged625.  Great for and 800HP build.

Consider upgrading to the adrenaline with Iquad instead of the smarty.  +100HP and gauges and custom tuning for almost the same price.

62/68 SXE is good for 550HP and spools pretty quick. If you are a towing heavy and often consider compounds for  hx35 and s464 for under $2000 with piping and s400 turbo.  Cooler EGT and faster spool up and sull support 500-550HP

We Have Valair clutches on sale today as well as injectors ( I would recommend 150HP and de-tune  a little on the lower RPM with the Adrenaline)

Thanks for the reply.

550hp is about 100hp above my target.  Would the GX-E 57/65/12 T3 be a better selection for 450 hp?  Considering spool time, EGT’s, etc?   If I paired the 57/65 with 100hp injectors and the Quad would that be a good recipe for 450 considering my intended use?    If not, what might you recommend in terms of a turbo/injectors for hitting that range?  I already have the Smarty, but an upgrade to the Quad isn’t outside the realm of possibilities.

Definitely going to get a clutch (Valair Dual Disc Quiet Organic rated @ 550hp seems the likely candidate?) and studs, but probably looking at the ARP247-2402 studs rather than the L-19’s (especially if the Quad cost is factored in).

GX-E 57/65/12 T3 and 100HP is a great set up for 450-500HP

With the quadzilla you can run 200HP injectors as if they were less power than stock.  If you think you may go bigger in the future you can do 150-200HP injectors and just not use as much fuel stretch or pump tap for now and then you do not need to buy another set of injectors later.
