'00 dead on road... 1688 code found,

Recommended Posts

:banghead:I guess I am now part of the elite! Yesterday, son Rob said the tach was bouncing again... mostly at lower rpm. the faster the engine turned, it smoothed out. (I replaced the sensor last fall) and today the truck fell flat on it's face dead. 1688 is the code stored.I put on an Air dog FRRP pump last fall too, but too late? This is a bone stocker engine with 130k miles.I will add, that the last 2 months we've had to keep the battery charger on to get it started in the morning. It would restart the rest of the day fine. I know it needs new batteries too. Volt gauge after it starts always runs mid 14v. I probably have a dead cell or two.would running poor batteries helped with the demise of this pump? And is it safe to say the 1688 code is 100% sure that I need to order a pump this weekend??

:duh: Well the batteries, alternator, and/or battery charger killed the VP44 with the P1688 code. AC noise is a big killer of electronics circuits. So I would replace the batteries, have the alternator bench tested, and make sure the battery charger is disconnected from the truck before turning the key on. Most battery charger are higher than the standard 14.5 volts. Like my little 6 amp will push upwards of 15.3 volts and lots of AC noise.

Hua?! All remanufactured Vp44's come with new overflow valves and typically required to send back the old overflow vavle with the core pump.

THAT's exactly what I used to think! So, do I either: get a new valve separately? ~ $40 or, find a shop who sends it with the pump? In any case, reusing the old isn't too cool? I replayed the install vid on their site, and it does still say 'VP44 no longer comes with overflow valve and sealing washers'.

hey rancherman, does it come with a new computer or used?

They don't specify. what they DO say is:

Thoroughbred Diesel offers replacement Bosch Vp44 Fuel Injection Pumps that have been rebuilt by certified Bosch tech and have been tested on a test stand for 4hrs before the pump is sent to you. Bosch VP 44 diesel pumps are also upgraded with all the latest upgrades required by Bosch. Our VP44 injection pumps come with a 1yr unlimited mileage warranty.

So, before I 'clik the buy now' button.... I'm going to do a little calling tomorrow AM!

Yes but alot of them are still selling used computers as long as they pass the bench test you are getting someone elses computer with unknown mileage. Remember theyre not rebuilding his pump and sending it back hes getting someone elses core and hes sending his in for a replacement. 1000 dollars is on the lower end of the price scale for a rebuilt vp they go all the way up to $2000 its possible theyre including a brand new computer but I would be surprised if they were...as you well know the electronics are the most common failure....

Blue Chip Diesel has a very informative writeup on diagnostics and common issues wi5h the vp. He is one of the more knowledgeable guys that rebuilds them. Even if you buy a pump from someone else you should at least take a little time and browse through his website. I learned a ton of information about these trucks through his website and talking to him personally. On my last truck i had some electrical issues that I or for that matter nobody locally could figure out. I called him out of desperation and he walked me through my issues. I ended up talking to him 4 or 5 times over the phone and thanks to him eventually found the problem. He didnt make a dime off of me and was more than happy to help. Not a whole lot of people will go to that length to help out someone they dont even know. That was one of 2 reasons I ended up buying a pump from him for my current truck.

I have a BC on mine also, but he does not build them in house. The last conversation I had with about, he told me he used more than one rebuilder , but did not volunteer who. He does have a great site with a lot of info and will take a lot of time speak with you. He sells pump w and w/o, or at least he used to.

:ahhh::ahhh::ahhh:

Got the old pump almost out, and used a mirror to check the pump #.....

ACCORDING TO Thoroughbred Diesel, 98.5 - 99 auto, and 5 speed trucks WILL BE 235 hp.

Later '99's through 02 WITH 6 SPEED Will have the 245 hp pump

The one I am working on is a registered 2000 model, with 6 speed. (truck was assembled in Oct 1999)

I entered my ESN with Cummins Quick Serve, and I got this:

Cummins claims I have a 235 hp engine, Thoroughbred Diesel says I SHOULD have the 245!

I got my inspection mirror out, and can read all but the last 2 numbers on my pump ID plate! I will have to finish pulling the pump to be able to read the whole thing...

do you know for sure your truck came from the factory with the 6 speed? I didnt know they were available in those years. I was always under the impression all 6 speeds were the HO motor but its kind of hard to argue with quick serve!

geez, I thought the 6 speeds were available in '99! along with the 5 too..My neighbor has a '03 WITH A 5 SPEED! (I thought all 5's were gone by then!)my underhood sticker is long gone, is the info on the data plate that's rivited to the radiator support?

My post was more of a question than anything. I "thought" the HO with 6 speed was only available in 01 and 02, but I am wrong on a regular basis :ashamed:

I dont know how to read the vin number but it will definitely have what you need if you cant verify through the vp. Maybe a call in to a local dealership?

Ok after thinking about this a little I remembered reading something on Chips website about the HO trucks. According to him, 00, 01, and 02 trucks with a 6 speed and the 8th digit in the vin being a 7 designates an HO truck. Sooooo, take a peek at your vin when ya get a chance

Thanks!

Ok, I didn't even have to walk out to the truck to look up the vin....Quick Serve already had it for me.

And my engine code of "6" sure enough is the standard non-HO 235 hp cummins.

I was confused by the 'good ol boy' doing his pump install video!

The sticker inside the glove box says manual trans- 6 speed.

Oh, a side note: I called ThoroughbredDiesel this morning... and asked them about New or reused electronics..... I was basically told if ''It aint broke, they don't fix it". That for me was an AH-HAA moment!

So, I'll check out some of the member recommended sites tonight!

Thanks!
