1. What is the best place to get a front hub assembly on a 2001 2wd 3500? Mine is howling like crazy and I suspect is part of the ABS problem I am having.

 

 

2. I looked but couldn't find what type of power steering fluid my truck needs. What brand or type of power steering fluid can I use? Synthetic? Availability? 

 

Sorry for the newb questions :)

I though you could pack/replace the bearings on the 2wd trucks?? Maybe I am wrong there. As for the P/S fluid, some people use ATF+4. I think it calls for actual powersteering fluid though. Most universal power steering fluids will work. I am going to start running the Amsoil P/S fluid next week. It meets chrysler's specs. I dont remember what the exact spec number is though...

Me and another guy took  turkey basters and sucked out the old PS fluid several times after runs till it was changed over, nice and clear. We both used the Valvoline synthetic ps fluid and noticed smoother operation and the squeal at start up in cold temps was gone as well.

 

I know there was one report of a leak using ATF. When he changed over to actual PS fluid leak went away.

I use Supertech Power steering fluid and usually purge the system out by unhooking a return line and routing to a waste bucket. This way you flush both the steering box and the hydro-booster with fresh fluid instead of turkey baster method which doesn't flush the system out too well of debris. ATF is not suppose to be used in our systems. But 2003 and up was ATF IIRC.

 

Howling noise might be wheel bearings failing and would cause the ABS issues as well. The wheel bearing will lean over a bit and the tone wheel will be out of line with the ABS speed sensors. If you replace ABS sensors you MUST do them in pairs!

as for Ram 3500- it is not a re-pack the bearings. it is big wheel bearing assembly that put on... I think it is 41mm socket and need big torque wrench to set it up. 

 

Ram 2500 are different as use common wheel bearings that do re-pack or replace it it is not look good or rough.

I guess the supertech PS fluid meets Chrysler's specs?

 

Also it makes sense on the wheel bearing, but what is bothering me is how to locate the actual assembly and the best price. I found a few but they were $230+ for one assembly.

Ah geez that's not what I was wanting to hear but it is what it is I suppose. Torque specs by any chance? Or can I use the elbow torque method?

I would buy a good name brand hub like Timken or such. They have some cheaper units out there that do not hold up very well under these heavy front ends.

Also on the power steering fluid Chrysler still does rerecommend Power Steering Fluid for the 94-02 trucks.

Discussion:

The factory fill power steering fluid for most 2004 model year Chrysler Group vehicles is ATF+4 (MS9602) and it provides superior performance at both low and high temperatures. WJ/WG and ZH vehicles use unique power steering fluids. Refer to the table to identify factory fill and the approved service power steering fluid by year and model. Note that MS9602 is Red in color and MS5931 and MS9933 are Amber/Yellow in color. All three fluids will darken in color with usage and fluid color is no longer an indication of fluid condition.

The part numbers for MS9602 are 05013457AA (quart) and 05013458AA (gallon). The part number for MS5931 is 04883077 (quart). The part number for MB345 is 05127381AA.

MS9602 should not be mixed or used as a “topping off” fluid on systems requiring MS5931. On some past models, MS9602 should be used as the replacement fluid. On these models, if a power steering system is being serviced that results in a large fluid loss, such as a pump, hose or gear/rack replacement, the complete system should be drained and filled with MS9602.

NOTE: This bulletin supersedes owner’s and service manuals for the vehicles listed above that may state to use MS9933 in the power steering system, and that may state not to use automatic transmission fluid in the power steering system.

I replaced both front hub assemblies on my 01 and ordered the complete kits straight from Mopar for around $300 a piece.  The bearings that Mopar used in the kits that I recieved were Timken sets made in the USA.  I have no idea on the tourque values, but I used the same theory we always use on heavy haul low-boy hubs after new bearings which is tighten up snug to ensure that the assembly is firmly set into the races then back off on the nut until you get a slight stop of the wheel from a good hand turn.  This may be completely wrong but I have not had any issues with the new bearings yet and I have roughly 25,000 miles on them so far, nor do we have any issues on the trailer hubs we rebuild that carry heavy loads for a living.  Just my two cents.

Probably not something anyone wants to do but in a pinch it seems to work... When putting the Lincoln back together after the timing cover replacement and reinstalling the power steering pump it howled like crazy (assuming because the pulley was such a s.o.b. to get off, it even broke the puller tool :mad: ). Anyway, since I figured I would be buying a new PS pump anyway I gave it a try :whistle: ...So I added  just a little bit of Lucas and low and behold it stopped the howling and jerkiness on the wheel :thumb1:  It seemed to cure the problem, then the head gasket blew :cry:  :cry:  The heads will come first and eventually I will replace the PS pump, but, in the meantime it will have to do... :ashamed:

Is your truck a 2wheel drive or 4 wheel drive?

4wheel drive torque specs are 180 ft lbs. I am not for sure on the 2 wheel drive front end.

2wd heavy duty wheel bearings nuts are torque specific at 280 ft lbs.  good thing I has 3/4dr snap on torque wrench to do that. also the spindle nuts are not re-use!!!!! get new one nut....

I thought there had to be something a lil beefier in a 3500 than a 2500. I'm not ready for that job. That front hub assembly was like a hundred pounds, at least that what it felt like when doing the Moog Problem Solver all 4 ball joint replacement a few years back. Truck is a tank!
