3rd Generation Dodge

This is a discussion forum of the 2003 to 2009 3rd Generation Dodge Ram Trucks with 5.9L and 6.7L Common Rail Cummins Turbo Diesel power train and drive line system.

  1. HPCR Injector Changes throughout the years Some have asked about changes throughout the years. 1. With the model year 2003-2004 injectors there were problems with the high pressure sealing ring. Bosch solved that problem by changing its design. 2. Another problem was wear on the nozzle needle guidance and tip. Bosch introduced a wear coating on the needle. Bosch improved the particle robustness with that coating on the needle and with a coating on the valve seat. 3. There was a design change in the contact area from the valve piston to the nozzle needle. They eliminated the bigger intermediate pin and changed it to the smaller pin / puck design. That r…

  3. Hi everyone, I was one of the uneducated consumers of a Bully Dog triple dog GT tuner, at the time I was new to diesel trucks and just purchased the name that everyone tosses around. Later I found out that for my goals the Bully Dog would just not suit my needs so I unmarried it and now just use it for it's gauges. The reason I am revisiting tuners is because I am in the process of having a transmission built and figured this would be a good time to get a tuner that better suits my mods. I just found out that BullyDog is finally accepting custom tunes and I can actually upgrade to the software that will allow my tuner to accept custom tunes for free and then go to on…

  4. ok bill, you suggested i 'fire up' a thread, so here i go! [popcorn ready? ] Since i 'applied' your 'old' smartyJR , i have noticed lite black smoke under [easy] throttle; enough to notice when i watch for it . Heavy throttle = a 'nice' cloud of black & thats ok, i will not be there long! Only changes i made of late are i swapped my old trucks flo-pro exh. & made it a CAT back, 4'' w/ 24'' straight through muffler. The exit pipe is at a better place for me to watch now so maybe its always been blowing black?. Truck starts great & idles clean. Smarty smoke?, or sloppy injectors? I did the 'rev. to 3000rpms for 10 sec. & let off test' & it comes dow…

  5. There are a few who look at doing different intake systems on 3rd gens and the best for stock to moderately modified 3rd gens is still the OEM air box with an extra deep pleated filter and the cold air mod to the bottom of the box. I also have a PSM cool hose between the box and the turbo to eliminate the baffled thing the OEM used. Filter I am using is a Wix part # 49946. With the stock depth filter it would pull the restriction gauge up about half way on a brand new filter during normal daily driving, with the extra deep filter the surface area to pull air through is greatly increased and over the years running the extra deep filter have never seen my restriction gauge…

  6. Ok here is the skinny on my Smarty touch install with pics of where I stuffed things. I put all of the wiring and remote module in the open compartment of the left side of the dash where on some models there would be a fuse panel but in my case it was an open void just the perfect size for the touch components. There was an opening in the dash frame just the perfect size to get the OBDII cable end through and the other thing with the orange and yellow dot is the EGT probe hookup point which converts to the Touch module with another cable all of which wrapped up nicely and all fit in the cubby together. I think the pics will be self explanatory but you can ask about th…

Finally got around to getting it done today. What an effing PITA!!!! Valve bank 4 is sort of under the cowl and ,5 and 6 are totally under the cowl and you need to be part monkey to get at them with wrenches and feeler gauges!!! Only have 215,486 miles on MightyWhitey and it's the first time done on her. None were crazy out of whack, but some were tight and some were loose. I turned the engine over using a socket on the alternator bolt. Only drew blood on one finger during the whole ordeal.

  10. Sold my Smarty Jr. this morning, its headed for an 04.5 in PA, now I get to finally order my first major upgrade in several years. Going to order the smarty touch system for my 05 next week. Anyone have any input as to the best vendor to get one from, I know there are no "Deals" with them all vendors are locked into selling for the same price from what I see but want to get input as to which vendor folks think I should support and why, obviously since the buyer found my Smarty for sale in my signature link to the add on here of all places I will give a MM1973man vendor the business to support the family.

So my friend has an issue. He has a 2006 ram 3500 cummins with a 6 speed transmission. While driving down the highway last week all he started getting a really bad miss, then a bunch of loud clanging from the engine. He got the truck into a local shop up in Wasilla that night. They pulled the valve cover off and found a valve spring missing. It's just gone. The valve dropped into the cylinder and got gobbled up by the mighty cummins. So at this point, it would appear he needs a rebuild at the very least. Shop said the head is past rebuild able. The piston is toast as well as the turbo. Very bad deal all around. If he were to find another motor, what sh…

Hello to all, just wanted to post my personal experience with these ball joints. When I got them I couldn’t find much info on them so I figured I would give them a try to adjust a minor camber issue I was having. It hasn't been a positive experience for me but that doesn't mean that it wouldn’t be functional on other makes and models. To keep things straight forward and short I am just going to list Pros and Cons. Pros: Allows up to 1 degree of camber and caster adjustment Cons: In order to adjust the wheel has to be removed and ball joints have to be loosened and then re assembled to check if adjustments are correct. (very time consuming alignment proce…

  14. Hello, I'll try to keep this short and to the point. I own a 04 Ram 2500, SBQC, 5.9L 24v, 4x4 Automatic with 250k+mi. on it , Sunday morning I went on a drive and noticed that the transmission was not shifting into over drive, all the other gears seem to work fine though. I checked the fluid level and it was at proper level it also looked clean as well. I had a friend hook up a scanner to it and check for any silent DTC's and got nothing. He then checked APPS readings because I changed it 2 weeks ago and he advised that I calibrated the new APPS within the required tolerances so it was not that. We then took the truck for a drive while he read the scanner and he said that…

Well,, I have ran into a snag with my free spin hub, and ball joint replacement. After putting the pass side together I decided I was`nt satisfied with the "loose" press fit of the new Dynatrac ball joints. I called dynatrac and they were more than happy to send me a set of knurled joints and swap me strait out plus shipping. I`m going on two weeks with my truck on jack stands, and it looks like its going to be early next week at best before the new joints get here.. evidently they have had to machine a set out and assemble them before they could ship?? The gal on the phone was very nice, so I have minded my manners.. I had no clue this was going to be such a cl…

  16. Truck due for a smog, so I pulled the programmer out (quick plug in under hood Edge). Runs fine (with a lot less power), no problem codes through odometer check, and no dash lights. When the key is turned on, the systems does the standard dash light check, truck starts, and all lights go out like normal. I have no reason to believe there is any issue at this point. Wife takes truck the to smog shop, they won't run it because it will fail. They plug in an ODB quick check tool and it says my "Check Engine Light" is on. Tried disconnecting the batteries for more than an hour, no help. Borrowed a friend scanner tool, it truly show a MIL issue, but no codes of any type are fo…

  17. Found 2 location options and was looking for opinions on which you think would be best option. debate. First pic is a secondary option which measures cyl 1-3 and is supposed to read hotter than the preferred position in the second pic of the rear collector area. In my mind the hotter the temps one sees it is more realistic of what is actually happening. http://www.dieselmanor.com/diy/CMS3-gauge/CMS-gen3gaugeinstall.htm

OK; to kinda go along with the couple posts in the 2nd gen forum about the VP and auto tranny, I'm asking how many miles y'all have on your OEM Common Rail injectors. Mighty Whitey has 223,2xx miles on them as of today.

Man I got started putting my Spyntec hubs on today... I got one side done, and the hub/lockout sticks out 2" past the lug cap?? It is supposed to be the D0008S shorty kit?? I was not expecting anything more than the lockout cap to stick out.
